Visit the Xujiahui Catholic Church in Shanghai

The Xujiahui Catholic Church, also known as St. Ignatius Cathedral, is a famous Catholic church in China. Located on Puxi Road in Xujiahui, Xuhui District, Shanghai, it serves as the cathedral of the Catholic Diocese of Shanghai. The church complex includes the bishop's residence and a convent, and it features a French Gothic Revival architectural style from the Neoclassical period. Construction of the cathedral began in 1904, and the main hall was completed in 1910. The five-story building is made of brick and wood, modeled after French medieval styles. The main hall is topped with Gothic bell towers on both sides, each with a spire reaching 50 meters high. Inside the hall, a statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus stands atop the altar, overseeing the entire church, making it the focal point of the cathedral. The church covers an area of 2,670 square meters, with a building area of 6,670 square meters, and can accommodate over 3,000 people. As a national key cultural relic protection unit and a landmark of religious architecture in Shanghai, the Xujiahui Catholic Church is definitely worth a visit.
