Baili Azalea Scenic Area

7.2
4.2/5
3.1k reviews
The Baili Azalea Scenic Area is located in the central part of Bijie City, Guizhou, at the border of Dafang and Qianxi. It is a natural wild azalea forest belt, named for its hundred-mile stretch of blooming flowers. Around mid-March each year, azaleas of various colors bloom sequentially from low to high altitudes, with the flowering period typically lasting until late April. The exact dates vary depending on the year's temperature. The peak bloom period is relatively short, so to catch the spectacular sight of flowers covering the mountains, it's best to monitor the bloom status and plan your visit accordingly. The wild azaleas in the forest include dozens of species such as rhododendron delavayi, rhododendron irroratum, and rhododendron anthosphaerum. When in bloom, the red flowers resemble flames, the pink ones resemble rosy clouds, and shades of purple and white intermingle. A unique feature is "different flowers on the same tree"—a single tree can produce blooms of varying shades. This phenomenon is commonly seen in the Pudi and Jinpo scenic areas, as well as the Huangping "Ten-Mile Azalea" zone. The "Azalea King," a thousand-year-old tree with tens of thousands of blossoms, is a must-see for many travelers. The Jinpo area, at a lower altitude, blooms slightly earlier, while Pudi blooms a bit later. If time permits, visiting both areas ensures you don't miss the full spectacle. The region is also home to the Yi and Miao ethnic groups, and the flower season often coincides with traditional festivals like the Yi Flower-Inserting Festival and the Miao Flower-Dancing Festival. The vibrant ethnic costumes and dances complement the floral landscape beautifully. The scenic area is distributed in a belt-like pattern, with some distance between sections, so planning your route in advance is advisable. Even if you miss the blooming season, the Baili Azalea Scenic Area remains pleasantly cool in summer, with its forests, grasslands, and river valleys offering a refreshing retreat.Dafang · 31km from downtown

Jiudongtian Scenic Spot

Jiudongtian is located on the Liuzhong River at the junction of Dafang and Nayong counties. It is a national key scenic spot with a total length of about 6 kilometers and is divided into two sections. The underground river in the cave expands to form many lakes in the cave, and the water flow is stable. "Yidongtian" is a dry cave, which is spacious inside and is the entrance hall. It covers an area of more than 3,000 square meters and has an average height of 80 meters. The stalactites on the cave walls and ceilings are bizarre and magnificent. The "Second Cavern" is now used as a power generation cavern, which uses gates to control the water flow from a height of 11 meters to generate electricity. It is a rare natural cave power station without a plant in China, and is extremely economical. The "Three Caves" are tall, wide, winding and quiet. The stone wall on the left bank is extremely smooth, as if it was cut by a knife or an axe, and colorful stalactites are hanging on the wall on the right bank. "Four Caves" is a natural Attraction composed of multiple caves. The stalactites in the caves are like towers or palaces, crystal clear and lifelike. "Wudongtian" is a dark lake in the shape of a gourd, which is naturally formed by contracting at the top and expanding at the bottom. The "Six Caves" are connected natural bridge windows, the top of which is about 100 meters above the horizontal plane and is very dangerous. "Qidongtian" is a large dry cave with thousands of windows and holes, which are interconnected and can accommodate thousands of people. The entrance of the "Eight Caves" is only two or three meters wide, but tens of meters high, like a narrow alley in a tall building. The sunlight refracts into it, and the light and color of the water surface change endlessly. The caves in the "Nine Caves" are divided into three layers. The strange-shaped water caves and dark lakes in the lower layer are connected to the Eight Caves, and are connected in all directions. In the middle layer, there is a huge natural bridge 90 meters long and 120 meters wide, which is shaped like a "gate". Looking down at the water cave from the square under the bridge, it is mysterious. Looking up, the sky is drawn as two huge arcs, like the magpie bridge when the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl meet. The upper layer is a cave hall parallel to the natural bridge arch, with an area of about tens of thousands of square meters. Countless cave entrances are connected to each other, forming a three-dimensional maze, which is rare in the world.Dafang · 34.5km from downtown

Shexiang Museum, located in the southeast corner of Shexiang Cemetery, 0.5 kilometers north of Dafang County, sits east to west. It is the first museum in Southwest China named after a national historical figure. Shexiang (1368-1396 AD) was the daughter of the Shexiang clan in Yongning Qielin (now Gulin, Sichuan) at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, a descendant of Mu Awo, the ancestor of the Hengbu of the Yi nationality, and a legendary and famous female politician of the Yi nationality. A famous female chieftain of the Yi nationality in Guizhou in the Ming Dynasty. The Shexiang Museum displays the splendor of the history and culture of the ancient Shuixi Yi people living in the northwest of Guizhou and taking generosity as the political, economic and cultural center. The Yi nationality is a nation with a long history and ancient civilization. After the Mobu Deshi clan of the Yi nationality moved into Guizhou, they developed and thrived in a large area west of the Yachi River for a long time, which is called "Lulubu" or "Shuixi Yi" in the history books. In the Shu Han period, there was Tuo Azhe as the king of Luodian, and the capital was generous; in the early Ming Dynasty, there was Mrs. Shexiang who took the consolation envoy to Guizhou and opened up the prosperous period such as Longchang Jiuyi. After a long social development process, the Shuixi Yi people have created a splendid culture with their own characteristics in practice. There are 6 showrooms in the museum, collecting a large number of ancient books in Yi language.Dafang · 1.8km from downtown

I rushed towards Baili Rhododendron with great excitement, thinking I had stumbled into a fairyland, but reality was like a burst bubble. I guess only aerial photography can capture that feeling, lacking the filters and meticulous editing of traditional film.

The scenery is beautiful; the highlight is the boat ride inside the cave. I recommend entering from the west and exiting from the west. Parking is convenient at the west gate. First, take a 3-minute sightseeing bus, then walk for about 10 minutes, then take another 5-minute sightseeing bus to the Natural Bridge to board the boat. If you have a one-way ticket, make sure to climb the stairs on your right when you reach the boarding area; the rest of the way is downhill, which is more convenient for the elderly and children. Finally, take the boat back from the east gate to the west gate. If you take the boat to the east gate first and then walk back to the west gate, it's all uphill stairs and will be very physically demanding!

Guizhou Xuanwei Mansion was built in the Shu Han Dynasty and was called Luodian Palace at that time. It was called Guizhou Xuanwei Mansion in the Ming Dynasty. It was destroyed by war in the fourth year of Tianqi in the Ming Dynasty (1624). The restored and rebuilt Guizhou Xuanwei Mansion with "one hall, eight courtyards and nine floors" is magnificent and reproduces the history and ethnic culture of Shuixi ancient Yi.

The scenic area is beautiful, but a bit demanding. The road from Yuchong Township to the scenic area is fine, though there were a few landslides after the rain, which were fortunately cleared. After arriving at the visitor center, take the glass plank road on the left to Xianyu Peak and the glass plank road on the right. We first took the glass plank road, which led downhill to the plank road halfway up the mountain. The scenery was beautiful, with views of Xianyu Peak across the way. After walking both sections of the glass plank road, if you haven't purchased a cable car ticket, you can return to the visitor center the same way. If you have a cable car ticket, you'll need to descend all the way to the cable car station at the bottom of the slope, which is quite demanding, and then take the cable car back to the visitor center. Near the cable car station, there are signs pointing you up the mountain to Xianyu Peak on the opposite side. This path is steep and quite demanding. From the visitor center to Xianyu Peak, you first walk a gentle trail, then descend a hill, and then ascend to Xianyu Peak, where there's a small temple at the summit. From Xianyu Peak, you can also see the plank road on the opposite side of the mountain. Finally, you need to return to the visitor center the same way.

Bijie Jinhai Lake Park is based on the concept of ecological construction. On the basis of protecting and restoring the original natural landscape, it integrates Bijie's local ethnic culture and contemporary elements to create a combination of tourism and cultural experience - "big mountains as scenery, small hills as gardens, big lakes as hearts, small waters as belts, canyons as networks, and green corridors as networks". It is a gathering of hearts, flower valleys and secluded pools, wetlands to explore the fragrance, Xiaofeng Lotus Garden, mountain and water ecology, remember the homesickness!

Shexiang Museum, relying on Shexiang Tomb (a national key cultural relic protection unit), is a comprehensive museum of Yi history and culture named after Madam Shexiang. It is built on the ruins of Muoge Castle (a provincial cultural relic protection unit). The courtyard of the scenic area is decorated with cherry blossoms, alpine azaleas, magnolias, euonymus and other courtyard trees. The environment is beautiful and quiet. There are Shexiang special exhibitions, Yi ethnic treasures and ethnic wisdom exhibitions. The building is an imitation of the Yi architecture of the Ming Dynasty. There are many 🔥-shaped patterns on the doors, windows and roofs, which reflects that the Yi people are a nation of fire culture. There is a short old street at the entrance of the museum, with golden, silver and bronze doors running through it. Muoge Ancient City is about 2+ kilometers away from Shexiang Museum. The ancient city itself is free, but the Guizhou Xuanwei Mansion inside it is a paid attraction. They are all modern attractions. The TV series "Madam Shexiang" was filmed here. Shexiang Park, 2+ kilometers away from Shexiang Museum, is also a modern attraction with terraces for fun. Dafang County is not big, it is built on the mountain, with different heights. It has various Guizhou specialties, such as beef hotpot, lotus residue soup, etc.
