Zhagana's morning mist is legendary: golden sunrise and three must-visit hiking viewpoints — traveler post in Xiahe

Zhagana's morning mist is legendary: golden sunrise and three must-visit hiking viewpoints

Great photography, insightful writing. Let a cloud-wandering traveler take you to discover the beauty of the journey—niche, quiet, elegant, and a place you'll want to return to again and again. · Just got back from Zhagana, and my eyes are completely satisfied: October morning mist clinging to the stone city, and the occasional first snowfall really sets the mood. · Let's be honest: the weather here changes faster than you can turn a page; you might need sunscreen and a down jacket on the same day. But the scenery will also give you a "wow" moment just when you're feeling disappointed! · 🥾 Recommended hiking routes Fairy Beach Route (best for beginners/photographers): Start from Dongwa Village and head up the wooden boardwalk; it takes 20–30 minutes to reach Fairy Beach. The alpine meadow is surrounded by stone peaks, and in autumn, the grass turns golden. Looking back, you can see four Tibetan villages spread out in the valley—it's incredibly photogenic. If you have the energy, keep wandering to Fairy Lake; if not, just sit on the meadow and zone out. Don't just take a photo at the Sky-Splitting and leave; Fairy Beach is the hidden king for panoramic views. · Runwu Valley Route (features trekking through a stream valley): The entrance is next to the Yeri Viewpoint; just search for "Yeri Runwu Valley Parking Lot" in your navigation app. The boardwalk follows the stream, with dense waterfalls and fir forests blocking out the sky. There are far fewer tourists, giving you the feeling of having the valley all to yourself. The entrance splits into left and right paths; I recommend entering on the left and exiting on the right to form a loop. The waterfalls are concentrated on the left section; most people turn back after reaching them. · Classic Loop (Dongwa Village – Tiger Mouth – Sky-Splitting – Stone Forest): The whole route takes 4–5 hours with a gentle ascent, and you can finish it with a light pack. At the narrowest point of the Sky-Splitting canyon, the stone walls seem to press in, and the light filtering through the gap is stunning. Heading up to the Stone Forest area, the gray-white limestone peaks are quite impressive up close. Be sure to return before 2:00 PM, as the temperature drops sharply once the mountain wind picks up. · Advanced Grand Loop: About 17 km, 1,200 m elevation gain, reaching nearly 3,950 m at the highest point. Suitable for those who have hiked high-altitude routes and have full gear. October weather is changeable; solo hiking is not recommended. · I stayed in Zhagana for two nights and personally experienced the Fairy Beach and Runwu Valley routes. I found that a 20L Camel Red Fox backpack + trekking poles was just right. The Red Fox capacity is perfect for "down jacket + trail snacks + water + camera" without putting pressure on the shoulders. The back panel is breathable, so my back didn't feel stuffy while walking the boardwalk at noon. The side pockets were convenient for grabbing 500ml of water and a thermos. When climbing to the Rock Viewpoint, buckling the waist belt significantly relieved the pressure on my shoulders. Reminder: It's lightweight, so don't overstuff it; use a larger pack for the heavy-duty Grand Loop. Trekking poles are a hidden necessity in Zhagana—the problem isn't the slope, it's the ground surface. · 🌦️ How to keep an eye on the weather Check the hourly forecast, not the daily one. The temperature difference between day and night easily exceeds 15°C; wear a sun-protective jacket during the day and a down jacket after sunset. There's a high probability of morning mist between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM; the mist over the Tibetan villages looks like fairyland, but when it's heavy and accompanied by rain or snow, visibility drops sharply and the boardwalks become slippery. Snow in October is not unusual; the stone city looks solemn and beautiful after snow, but the boardwalks are slippery, so high-top, non-slip shoes are a must. Check the precipitation radar map the night before you leave, focusing on the time before 9:00 AM and after 2:00 PM. Once you arrive in the village, just ask your guesthouse host, "Will I be able to see the sunrise tomorrow morning?" It's more accurate than any app. · 📸 Three must-visit viewpoints ① Dari Viewpoint: The highest altitude and widest view. You can drive nearby and walk a few steps, making it extremely friendly for those who don't want to hike. Arrive 15 minutes before sunrise to watch the morning mist fill the valley and the golden light hit the peaks of the stone city. In peak season, walk 50 meters deeper into the boardwalk to avoid the crowds. ② Rock Viewpoint: On the mountainside opposite Yeri Village. Walk another 30–60 minutes along the boardwalk. Once you're up there, the four villages, Lasang Temple, and the sacred mountain are all at your feet—a true panoramic view of the "stone box." If you only choose one to spend time at, I choose this one. ③ Fairy Beach Viewpoint: A 20-minute walk from Dongwa Village, facing the Niegan Dawa sacred mountain directly. The meadow is open, and when you stand there, the stone peaks are your background. The evening light has a golden velvet texture. · On this seven-day Gannan trip, I discovered that Labrang Monastery is even bigger than the Forbidden City—take a cultural stroll along the prayer wheel path. Gahai Lake is a scenic spot along the way where the sky and water blend into one color. The canyon at Langmusi is the only place in Gannan, besides Zhagana, that is worth setting aside half a day for your legs to explore. Follow me! I'll introduce them one by one later!

Discover Labrang Monastery: A Thousand-Year Journey into Tibetan Faith and the World’s Longest Prayer Wheel Corridor — traveler post in Xiahe

Discover Labrang Monastery: A Thousand-Year Journey into Tibetan Faith and the World’s Longest Prayer Wheel Corridor

Experience the breathtaking grandeur of ancient Tibetan architecture at Labrang Monastery (拉卜楞寺), where brick-red walls and shimmering golden roofs harmonize perfectly with the surrounding peaks. As one of the six most significant monasteries of the Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect, located in Xiahe County within the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu, China, it remains a vibrant sanctuary for pilgrims and sacred rituals. This destination celebrates the enduring glory of ancient Tibetan Buddhism amidst timeless forest vistas. The sight of monks in deep crimson robes and the intricately carved prayer wheels creates an atmosphere that is both spiritually uplifting and visually stunning. Lush green hillsides and natural stone pathways wrap around the site, offering fresh mountain air that rejuvenates the soul. · Masterpiece Highlights A true masterpiece of this trip, the pilgrimage route offers deep Tibetan tranquility. Follow the path along the prayer wheel corridors and ancient stone alleys: · The World’s Longest Mani Wheel Corridor: A marvel of traditional Tibetan craftsmanship, this wooden-roofed corridor stretches over 3.5 kilometers, encircling the monastery. It features a continuous line of scarlet prayer wheels adorned with colorful Buddhist imagery, allowing pilgrims to spin them while soaking in the pure mountain breeze. · Grand Assembly Hall & Golden Roofs: An architectural triumph set against the sky. This massive stone hall features white and burgundy walls topped with roofs of gilded gold, carved with dragon and parasol motifs. It stands majestically against the backdrop of dense green pine forests. · Mustard-Yellow Alleys & the Monastic Life: Narrow stone paths tucked away from the crowds lead you past thick earthen walls of orange-brick and soft yellow. This classic setting feels like a living painting as you spot Tibetan monks in crimson robes and yellow crested hats engaged in spiritual discussion. · Getting There You can easily reach the area via local bus or by taking a scenic 3-4 hour road trip from Lanzhou, heading south through the Gannan valleys. This gives you the most freedom to explore the monastery and nearby squares. (The peak season with the best weather is June to August. Don’t miss trying traditional "Tibetan Yak Butter Tea" and "Boiled Yak Meat" at local restaurants around the monastery to taste authentic local flavors.) · Opening Hours and Fees The outdoor paths and the prayer wheel corridor are open to the public for free 24 hours a day. However, tickets are required to enter the main assembly halls, the yak butter sculpture museum, and the Buddhist colleges. These are open daily from 08:00 to 18:00, with a maintenance fee of approximately 40 Yuan. · Dress Code Comfortable sneakers or walking shoes are highly recommended as the monastery grounds are vast with natural stone and dirt paths. As this is a sacred religious site, modest attire is required; shorts and short skirts are prohibited. To make your photos pop against the red walls and golden roofs, opt for clean, minimalist tones like cream, white, or light-wash denim for a perfectly composed look.

Ganjia Secret Land in Gannan | A hidden gem in Gannan, a rendezvous with an ancient city and White Stone Cliff — traveler post in Xiahe

Ganjia Secret Land in Gannan | A hidden gem in Gannan, a rendezvous with an ancient city and White Stone Cliff

📍Location: Gannan · Ganjia Secret Land If you are dreaming of Gannan, don't just stick to Zhagana! Ganjia Secret Land is a true treasure hidden deep in Gannan. Here, there are no crowded throngs, only snow-capped mountains, grasslands, canyons, and ancient villages, blending the vastness and tranquility of the Tibetan region into this land. Walking into Ganjia Secret Land, you are immediately struck by the continuous White Stone Cliff. The massive grayish-white rock wall stretches across the grassland like a natural giant city wall, steep and majestic. During the golden mountain moments at dawn or dusk, sunlight spills onto the cliff face, dyeing the entire mountain a warm golden-orange. In the valley, streams murmur, and gravel beaches accompany the green grass, creating an incredibly atmospheric vibe. The vast alpine grassland spreads out at the foot of the mountains, with hills of green grass undulating in the wind. Colorful prayer flags flutter under the blue sky, and the wind is filled with the scent of freedom. You can see travelers on horseback on the grassland, moving slowly along dirt roads. In the distance are layers of rolling mountains, with clouds hanging low over the peaks. Every snapshot you take is a healing, picture-perfect scene. The most breathtaking sight is the Bajiao Ancient City, a 1,000-year-old city lying quietly in the heart of the grassland. Looking down from the viewing platform, the city walls form a unique octagonal outline. Houses are scattered about, smoke rises slowly, and the ancient city blends into the grassland and mountains, as if traveling back 1,000 years in time. The wooden boardwalk leads upward, and step by step, you can unlock a panoramic view of the ancient city. Standing high up and looking out over the entire Ganjia Grassland, the view is so expansive that it makes you forget all your worries. There are also tranquil lakes here, with clear water reflecting the blue sky and white clouds. White tents are scattered along the shore, a unique gentleness belonging to the Tibetan region. The yak sculptures and scenic spot signs on the grassland are great photo spots. Driving along, stopping as you go, there are surprises around every corner. ✨Travel Tips 1. The altitude in Ganjia Secret Land is relatively high, so remember to walk slowly. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket, as there is a large temperature difference between day and night. 2. We recommend visiting White Stone Cliff in the evening to see the golden mountain view. The light and shadows are stunning, perfect for photos. 3. Driving yourself is the most convenient way to get around. The scenic area is very large, and the attractions are far apart. 4. Respect local customs. Do not step on prayer flags or disturb the lives of the local people.

22°C Sangke Grassland: The ultimate family getaway! Stay in a creekside cabin and let the kids splash around — traveler post in Xiahe

22°C Sangke Grassland: The ultimate family getaway! Stay in a creekside cabin and let the kids splash around

When traveling with kids in the summer, you want a place that's clear, cool, and lets them run wild in the water. Sangke Grassland in Gannan, Gansu—a cool hidden gem tucked away on the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau—has an average summer temperature of around 22°C. A mountain breeze sweeps away all the summer heat, leaving you with endless green meadows and crystal-clear streams, the air filled with the scent of grass and damp earth. The best part? There's a luxury wilderness cabin homestay hidden right by the creek. You can step out the door and be in the cool stream water in just a few steps. As soon as the kids drop their bags, they're off to the creek with their little buckets, and adults can finally slow down between the grasslands and the streams. 📍 [2-day, 1-night relaxed, cool getaway] Day 1: Arrive at Lanzhou Station by high-speed train, then rent a car and head to the Yunshang Xishe Homestay in Sangke Grassland (about a 3-hour drive). In the afternoon, soak your feet on the homestay terrace while looking out at the grasslands and distant mountains. In the evening, take a walk along the stream and watch the sunset paint the meadows a warm orange. At night, enjoy an authentic Tibetan hot pot in the courtyard while feeling the grassland breeze. The kids will be so tired from playing that they'll fall asleep the moment their heads hit the pillow. Day 2: Spend the morning wading and catching small fish in the natural creek right in front of the homestay. The water is shallow—just knee-deep—and the meadows on both banks are soft and shaded. In the afternoon, head deeper into the Sangke Grassland for horseback riding and feeding lambs, or visit Labrang Monastery to see the prayer wheels. Head back home at a leisurely pace once you've had your fill of fun. 🏨 [Luxury wilderness cabins by the Sangke Grassland creek] The Yunshang Xishe Homestay we stayed at is one of the few high-quality luxury wilderness accommodations in the local Sangke Grassland area. It's located deep in the grasslands, away from the streets and traffic noise, offering great privacy. The best part is that the homestay faces the entire grassland meadow, surrounded by streams and distant mountains, with an open, unobstructed view. The rooms are equipped with huge floor-to-ceiling windows and private viewing terraces. You can see the streams and grasslands the moment you open the door. The kids rushed into the creek with their nets as soon as they dropped their bags, while we sat on the terrace chairs, sipping local tea and watching the cattle and sheep graze slowly on the grassland. This kind of relaxation is so much better than air conditioning. 🎯 [3 highlights tested by kids] 💦 Fishing time in the grassland creek: There's a crystal-clear natural creek right in front of the homestay, with a riverbed covered in smooth pebbles. The kids rolled up their pant legs and stepped into the cool stream water, bending over to flip rocks and look for small shrimp underneath. They giggled whenever they got splashed, and they wouldn't budge for the whole afternoon. This joy of being able to play in the water right outside your door is so much more comfortable than going to crowded tourist spots. 🐑 Feeding lambs in the grassland pasture: Herds of cattle and sheep roam freely on the pastures around the homestay. The kids crouched in front of the fence with grass, carefully feeding the lambs. When the lambs came over to nibble the grass, they giggled non-stop. This experience of getting up close with animals is more vivid than any picture book. 🌿 A nature classroom in Sangke Grassland: The meadows of Sangke Grassland are flat and easy to walk on, lined with layers of green wildflowers, with sunlight filtering through the clouds to cast dappled shadows. The kids crouched down to look at the dew on the petals and reached out to touch the dandelions by the roadside. Whenever a butterfly flew by, they excitedly pointed it out to us. This authentic grassland experience is more vivid than any picture book. 💡 [A few practical tips] The temperature difference between day and night on the grassland is significant, so be sure to pack a light jacket; you'll still need a blanket when sleeping at night. The stones by the creek are slippery, so non-slip water shoes are a must. Bring extra changes of clothes as you're likely to get wet while playing in the water. Bring enough mosquito repellent, as there are quite a few bugs on the grassland. The UV rays in Gannan are strong, so bring plenty of sunscreen and sun hats. The homestay has limited availability, so remember to book in advance during peak season. After this two-day, one-night trip, the whole family was immersed in the coolness of the stream and the greenery of the grassland. The kids were completely worn out from playing, and we adults were able to fully recharge. It's truly rare to have such a comfortable and relaxing family time during the summer vacation.

[Gannan · Labrang Monastery pitfall guide | 3 days, 3 nights, CNY 3,000 true immersive tour of the highest Tibetan Buddhist academy practical guide (no-pitfall version)] — traveler post in Xiahe

[Gannan · Labrang Monastery pitfall guide | 3 days, 3 nights, CNY 3,000 true immersive tour of the highest Tibetan Buddhist academy practical guide (no-pitfall version)]

[Gannan · Labrang Monastery pitfall guide | 3 days, 3 nights, CNY 3,000 true immersive tour of the highest Tibetan Buddhist academy practical guide (no-pitfall version)] Labrang Monastery is not a scenic backdrop for a highland selfie or a prop for spinning a prayer wheel — it is home to the world’s longest circumambulation corridor (3.5 km), one of the six great Gelugpa monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, and the most complete living site of the traditional Five Sciences scholastic system: monks begin reciting the logic treatise at 4:30 AM, the debate courtyard still rings with a millennium of reasoning; 108 stupas stand quietly in the white stupa grove, and every mani stone is hand-carved by a monk; local women offer butter lamps to the statue of Je Tsongkhapa using butter from their own yaks and hand-twisted wicks; children at the monastery primary school memorize the Thirty Verses and the phonetics text from hand-copied textbooks… There are no blessing ribbons for sale, no consecrated pendant hawkers, and no commercial performances — faith lives in the morning light, the chanting, and the scent of yak butter. But in reality tourists are often misled by “Labrang + Zhagana combo tickets,” pay high prices for mechanized prayer wheels, or stay in so-called Tibetan homestays and never hear a single monastic call to prayer. This guide shows how to avoid all the traps with CNY 3,000, stay in a monastery-affiliated courtyard, eat a genuine three-treasure vegetarian feast, and learn authentic practice. ✅ Key pitfalls to avoid · draw the red line first ❌ Do not trust the Labrang combined ticket sold online (advertised as CNY 90 including Zhagana) — Labrang sells tickets separately: CNY 40 per person (students/elderly half price), no bundling. Zhagana is an independent geological scenic area with no religious or management ties to the monastery. ✅ Correct approach: buy tickets on site at the visitor service center on the plaza in front of the monastery and receive a free Labrang guide booklet (includes prayer-wheel route map, debate timetable, and etiquette information). ❌ Do not buy “consecrated prayer wheels” or “lucky-knot” charms — 95% are mass-produced in Lanzhou markets, have no monastery certification, no consecration rituals, and violate the regulations on religious affairs. ✅ Correct approach: reserve the "Wensi Academy cultural workshop" to learn hand-painted six-syllable mantra thangka from a monk (CNY 160 per person, includes mineral pigments, a cotton thangka, and a certificate). ❌ Do not stay in trendy "Tibetan-style homestays" — many are later additions far from the monastery, lack butter lamps, and serve margarine for breakfast. ✅ Correct approach: choose Sangke Yanshe (a monastery-affiliated cultural courtyard conversion, 2 nights CNY 520 including breakfast and vegetarian feast), or Baita Ju (an old Qing-era monk residence where you can open your window to the white stupa grove and fall asleep to the sound of chanting). ✅ Day 1 | get to know the monastery and do the three correct rounds Take the high-speed train to Lanzhou West → take the bus 3.5 hours to Xiahe (CNY 120) → taxi 15 minutes to the monastery (CNY 25). After checking in at Sangke Yanshe, head straight to Labrang Monastery: at 7:00 AM join the monks for the first round of circumambulation of the corridor (clockwise, do not go counterclockwise, do not step over prayer wheels); at 10:00 AM watch the recitation in the great scripture hall; in the afternoon walk the white stupa grove and buy a jar of Labrang butter tea (brewed at the monastery tea house, CNY 38 per jar) while listening to an elder monk tell old stories about how turning the prayer wheel is turning the heart. ✅ Day 2 | get the taste right and eat the right things Wake early and visit the Xiahe market (only open at dawn on Tue and Fri): buy only three items — Labrang butter tea (monastery tea house, CNY 38 per jar), Ando yak jerky (hand-torn by local families, CNY 65 per pack), and Gannan barley cakes (freshly baked at Zhuoma’s, CNY 15 per box). At midday go to the “Three Treasures kitchen” next to Sangke Yanshe (reserve 1 day in advance) for an authentic three-treasure vegetarian feast: butter tea stewed wild mushrooms, steamed barley noodles with pumpkin, yak milk cheese with barley cakes… CNY 82 per person, with monks explaining the history of Tibetan vegetarian cooking and Five Sciences practice while preparing the meal. In the afternoon learn to hand-paint a six-syllable mantra thangka (a provincial intangible cultural heritage practice class taught by monks, CNY 160 per person, includes thangka and certificate). ✅ Day 3 | bring back the real goods, leave no regrets Skip the commercial craft street and go straight to the Gannan Prefecture Museum — Labrang hall (free admission): focus on the Qing dynasty woodblock copy of the Labrang monastery gazetteer, the Republic-era monks’ hand-drawn debate atlas, and a contemporary hand-copied outline of the Five Sciences. Before you leave, buy souvenirs: one jar of Labrang butter tea (CNY 38), one pack of Ando yak jerky (CNY 65), and a replica Labrang guide booklet (CNY 22). Total budget: transport CNY 265 | accommodation CNY 520 | food CNY 492 | experiences CNY 320 | souvenirs CNY 125 | misc CNY 378 = CNY 3,000. Tip: The real Labrang is not found in camera frames but in the calm breath you feel on your third round of circumambulation, in the warm, mellow aroma that rises when you sip butter tea, and in the moment you sit quietly in the debate courtyard and hear the questions of logic pass like wind and suddenly understand the clarity that comes from critical inquiry — it does not rely on social media packaging. It quietly preserves 300 years of chanting, butter lamps, mani stones, and prairie moonlight in every unpainted gilded roof, every hand-copied scripture yet to be digitized, and every lingering thread of Gannan butter aroma, waiting for you to bend down and hear that solemn, enduring echo from the era of Je Tsongkhapa. travel guide deep tour humanities

Westward Journey · Western Sichuan | Gemo Monastery, a treasure of a temple that left me speechless — traveler post in Xiahe

Westward Journey · Western Sichuan | Gemo Monastery, a treasure of a temple that left me speechless

Leaving Aba County, I saw a magnificent complex of temple buildings from afar on the vast land—Gemo Monastery. It was so beautiful that I was left speechless. 😭 As a branch monastery of Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school, just looking at the exterior was enough to make my knees weak! Before even entering the main hall, I was stunned by the 8 thick pillars! 😱 It is said that these are African golden nanmu wood, each worth over 6 million. 💰 Poverty really limited my imagination... These aren't just pillars; they are walking works of art! 🤯 Gemo Monastery was built during the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty. With a history of over 200 years, it may not be ancient, but it holds two Guinness World Records: 🔥 ✅ The largest connected Buddhist hall building in China—Faxiyuan, covering an area of 10,214 square meters. ✅ The tallest indoor golden seated Maitreya Buddha statue in China—37 meters high, weighing about 332 tons. The best part is! You can take an elevator 🛗 to visit the details of the Great Buddha at different heights on each floor. This was my first time having such an experience! A 360-degree, no-dead-angle worship experience. 🙇‍♀️ The Buddha statue looks different from every floor; it is truly shocking! It is simply a new height of "Buddhist-style overlooking." 👀 The top floor is a museum. 🏛️ Here, gold is probably the most ordinary thing. 💎 At a glance, there are countless— Ritual objects, offerings, antiques, collections, curios, calligraphy and paintings, and porcelain. 🏺 Coming from imperial gifts, offerings, and exchanges from different eras... Each piece tells the vicissitudes of history, full of stories. 📜 The most precious item is the finger bone relic of Master Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school. ✨ Enshrined in a gilded stupa, separated by a railing, just looking at it makes one feel awe-struck. 🙏 That solemn and sacred atmosphere is truly hard to describe in words. I felt my soul being gently tapped. 🧘‍♀️ When I walked out, it was already dark, and a Tibetan father and daughter were just coming out too. The little girl was leisurely spinning around in front of the corridor, singing an unknown song. 🎵 At that moment, the golden temples under the blue sky and white clouds were all plated with a layer of gentle light by the setting sun. 🌅 I felt my whole soul had been purified, as if it had been rebooted with one click. 🧘‍♀️ 📍 Gemo Monastery, also known as Huiyuan Temple One of the three major Gelug monasteries in Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is a branch of Labrang Monastery, one of the six great monasteries of the Yellow Sect. 🏔️ Located in Tangmai Village, Gemo Town, Aba County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Open all day, all year round, feel free to come and check it out! It is 13 kilometers away from the county seat and covers an area of 18,000 square meters. It is truly worth a special trip; you won't regret it! 📌 Small Tips: It is recommended to arrange half a day to stroll slowly, don't rush the itinerary. Feeling that tranquility and shock is worth more than anything! ✨

Gannan | A hidden plateau gem on the Gansu-Sichuan border, a 5-day/4-night relaxed loop itinerary — traveler post in Xiahe

Gannan | A hidden plateau gem on the Gansu-Sichuan border, a 5-day/4-night relaxed loop itinerary

Many people simply classify Gannan as "Little Tibet," but its character is actually more unique. Grasslands, stone forests, canyons, and ancient Tibetan temples are intertwined. You don't need to travel long distances to the heart of the Tibetan region to feel the unique tranquility of the plateau. This loop starting and ending in Lanzhou has a relaxed pace, balancing culture and natural scenery, suitable for travelers who want to slow down and experience the plateau. 📍Scope: Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu, connecting Hezuo, Diebu, Xiahe, and parts of Aba along the way 🎫Ticket reference: Milarepa Buddha Pavilion CNY 20; Zhagana CNY 80, sightseeing bus CNY 60; Nianbaoyeze CNY 120; Labrang Monastery CNY 40; Ganjia Secret Realm combo ticket CNY 80, sightseeing bus CNY 40; many other roadside spots are free ⏰Recommended duration: 5 days/4 nights, avoiding high-intensity travel 🚗Transportation comparison ▪️Self-drive Pros: High flexibility. You can stop anytime at spots along the Jiangdie Highway. Suitable for travel partners who are skilled at mountain driving and prefer to set their own pace Cons: Dense winding mountain roads, unstable signal on some sections. Not recommended for beginners. Parking is tight in popular areas during peak season; traveling off-peak is recommended ▪️Non-self-drive We recommend chartering a car or joining a carpool after arriving in Lanzhou. Local drivers are familiar with weather conditions, rockfall-prone sections, and hidden photo spots, so you don't have to focus on the road. This is safer for travel with seniors and children An alternative is taking a bus from Lanzhou to Hezuo or Xiahe, but schedules are limited and travel time is long, so it is not highly recommended 📅5-day/4-night itinerary Day 1: Arrive in Lanzhou, experience the local life along the Yellow River After arriving in Lanzhou, check into your hotel in the city. In the evening, take a walk at Zhongshan Bridge and watch the Yellow River flow slowly. You can find a local shop to taste beef noodles and Tianpeizi to adapt to the Northwest diet. Tip: Prioritize accommodation near transportation hubs. Purchase sunscreen and warm supplies in advance, as supplies on the plateau are not as convenient as in the city. Day 2: Milarepa Buddha Pavilion | Jiangdie Highway | Zhagana, stay in a Tibetan village The Milarepa Buddha Pavilion is a nine-story tower-style Tibetan building, housing statues of masters from different sects. The red-walled building is great for photos. When visiting, follow local customs by walking counter-clockwise and keeping quiet. Afterward, drive along the Jiangdie Highway, where forests, canyons, and meadows alternate, offering expansive views. Arrive in Zhagana in the evening and check into a Tibetan homestay in Dongwa Village or Dari Village. On clear nights, you may have a chance to see the starry sky. Accommodation reference: Tibetan homestays are mostly in the CNY 200–400 range, with views of the mountains and villages from the window. Day 3: Zhagana morning mist | Fairy Beach | Manzetang Wetland | First Bend of the Yellow River, stay in Aba County Wake up early and head to the viewing platform to wait for the sunrise in the morning mist. The thin mist shrouds the Tibetan village and barley racks, creating a great atmosphere. Afterward, take a light hike on the Fairy Beach meadow, which is flat and easy to walk, with stone peaks shrouded in clouds and mist opposite. In the afternoon, head to the Manzetang Plateau Wetland, where cattle and sheep roam freely in the vast grasslands, perfect for sitting quietly and relaxing. In the evening, head to the First Bend of the Yellow River to wait for the sunset, where the river surface has soft light and shadows under the setting sun. Day 4: Nianbaoyeze | Aba prayer wheels | Kirti Monastery & Namo Grand Canyon, stay in Langmusi Town The rock formations of Nianbaoyeze are highly recognizable. If self-driving, you can reach the 4,520-meter viewing platform to view Zhagaer Cuo Lake and the stone mountains up close, with rich color layers in the lake water. Stop by the prayer wheels in Aba County, then head to Kirti Monastery. Hike along the Namo Grand Canyon to visit the source of the Bailong River, where streams flow through the forest, feeling refreshing. Day 5: Langmusi morning view | Sangke Grassland | Labrang Monastery | Ganjia Secret Realm, return to Lanzhou Wake up early and climb the back mountain of Sertri Monastery to overlook the morning mist of Langmusi Town, with the red cliffs clearly layered in the morning light. Pass by Sangke Grassland, where cattle and sheep are scattered across the pastures. The grassland is free to enter, and horseback riding is charged separately. Afterward, head to Labrang Monastery and walk slowly along the long prayer corridor to learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture. If time permits, you can enter the Ganjia Secret Realm to view the geological sites of Baishiya and Bajiao Ancient City, then return to Lanzhou to conclude the trip. 💡Travel tips ▪️Diet: Tibetan and Sichuan cuisine are common along the route. You can try yak hot pot, fern root rice, and yak yogurt. The flavors are heavy, so you can prepare some snacks in advance ▪️Altitude adaptation: Do not run vigorously when you first arrive. Gradually adjust your pace, drink plenty of water, and prepare oxygen supplies as needed. Do not take long hot showers immediately after arriving on the plateau ▪️Cultural etiquette: Keep quiet when entering temples. Do not touch Buddha statues or butter lamps. Ask for permission before taking portraits of people. In pastoral areas, try to walk along established paths and do not trample on grasslands or wetlands ▪️Gear: The plateau has high UV intensity, so sunscreen and sunglasses are essential. The temperature difference between day and night is huge, so be sure to bring a windbreaker or a thick jacket. Signal is weak in many valley sections, so download offline maps in advance and prepare a small amount of cash Best time to visit: 🌿Summer (June–August): The peak season of green wonderland This is the traditional peak tourist season for Gannan and also the time when the climate is most comfortable. 🍁 Autumn (September–October): The golden season with fewer crowds and beautiful scenery If you don't like crowds, autumn in Gannan is definitely your first choice. It is considered by many experienced travelers to be the time with the best value for money.

Ganjia Secret Realm

As the first stop in Gannan from Linxia, it's a pretty good tourist attraction, with all three viewing platforms worth taking photos at. However, even during the off-season holidays, the shuttle buses are hard to find, so I can only imagine how ridiculous the queues will be during the summer peak season.

Labrang Monastery

Labrang Monastery is truly a dream destination when the weather is perfect! The golden roofs gleam under the blue sky and white clouds, and the entire monastery appears exceptionally solemn and magnificent in the high-altitude sunshine. As a world-renowned center of Tibetan studies, its prayer wheel corridor stretches for 3.5 kilometers with over 2,000 prayer wheels. Walking clockwise with the pilgrims, the sunlight filters through the eaves, casting warm glow on the prayer wheels and red walls, creating an incredibly atmospheric experience. Climbing the Gongtang Pagoda offers a panoramic view of the golden roofs, white stupas, and brown-red monks' quarters layered upon each other, with rolling mountains and grasslands in the distance – a truly expansive vista. If you're lucky, you might even witness monks debating, their gestures and clapping adding to the captivating atmosphere.

Sangke Grassland

The Sangke Grassland is absolutely worth visiting on a good day! Under the blue sky and white clouds, the entire grassland is as green as an endless velvet carpet. Sunlight streams in, and cattle and sheep graze leisurely on the grass in the distance—a scene both clean and soothing. The wind carries the scent of fresh grass, and the view is incredibly expansive; every snapshot is a masterpiece. On a clear day, the sky is a crystal-clear blue, and the clouds are so low they seem almost within reach, creating a stunning contrast with the green grassland—no filter is needed. Strolling through it, you completely relax, leaving the hustle and bustle of the city far behind.

Baishi Cliff

Like other grand canyons, Baishiya Grand Canyon is scenic, with deep, secluded valleys, babbling brooks, and a cool, refreshing atmosphere. However, Baishiya also has its unique features. First, at the end of the canyon is a mysterious cave, said to connect to Qinghai province, but due to time constraints, I didn't explore it. Second, the canyon is home to some of the cutest creatures on earth: groundhogs. These little guys are not only unafraid of people, but they also constantly beg tourists for food. Come on, don't you see how fat you are? All you do is eat; don't you feel any guilt?

Bajiao City Ruins

A large number of cultural relics have been excavated in Bajiaocheng, such as metal coins, bronze bulls, square bricks, simple tiles and flat tiles from the Tang and Song dynasties. In addition, in the plains, hills and terraces around Bajiaocheng, there are layers of terraces abandoned in ancient times. In some places, the terraces are built all the way to the top of the mountain, which shows how developed the economy and densely populated this place were in the past. Bajiaocheng is located 35 kilometers north of Xiahe County, on the river terrace of Gangjia Grassland.
