Fox Inn

Stay was for 2 nights in a double room in September and purchased with a Buy-a-Gift voucher for £130. No parking available but there is a public (pay and display) car park 150 metres away When we shown to our room we were told that there wasn't a toilet in the room but there was a shared one at the end of the corridor. We had not previously been informed of this. There was no food available for an evening meal despite it being only 5pm. No breakfast was available on either of the two mornings. No information was provided in the room regarding wi-fi or indeed anything else. There were no bedside lights and no wardrobe - just two hangers on a clothes rack. The water in the shower was dangerously hot because the taps were so difficult to turn and control. There were soap dribbles down the outer wall of the shower and the wall toothbrush holder was stained with old toothpaste and covered in dust. The old wooden sash window was wedged open with a wooden block, not sure why, because it was totally stuck anyway - it couldn't be moved either up or down. The totally frosted window obscured our fine view of the fire escape and back yard. Admittedly the days had been warm, but the room was unbearably hot at night because no air could get in. There was a huge cellar cooler outside the window which emitted a noise that sounded like a giant hairdryer that never turned off. Had we been cool enough to get to sleep, this noise would have kept us awake anyway. The upholstered chair in the room was a very worn and dirty affair that that had definitely seen better decades. We didn't sit on it to test its comfort. The room wasn't serviced before the second , (and thankfully last), evening and we had to go in search of a member of staff to give us a tea bag. On the positive side, the linen was clean and the bed comfortable..... Don't think we'll be coming back though!
Gisborough Hall Hotel

This is a wonderful hotel, and all the staff are an absolute credit to it. Husband and I took my Mum here for a special trip. From time spent when I booked making sure my Mum got the right kind of room for her needs, to nothing being too much trouble once we were there, this place is luxurious without being stuffy. Friendly but with an old-school attention to detail and top notch service. My Mum's room was in the main house near the lift and therefore full of character, while we had a spacious and immaculate room in the newer Woodland Wing. Dinner on both nights was exceptional and breakfast was good too. Lovely to meet Lord Gisborough himself, very chipper at 97! And my husband enjoyed some post dinner whiskies from ”The Safe”. A perfect base from which to explore the coast around Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. Also, despite there being weddings on both nights we were there there was no noise or disruption to the service for ordinary guests which is not always the case!! It's a long way from us but if we were EVER so much as thinking of returning to the area, this would be our first choice
