We arrived in Hanoi at around 10am/11am, totally exhausted, and were happy to finally be at the hotel. BUT: although our room was free, we couldn't move into it until 2pm. Unless we paid $20 for "pre-check-in". I travel a lot, but I've never experienced this! In the end, I paid $10 because we really wanted to go to the room (the price was "kindly" reduced after I pointed out a corresponding review that I would write). The room was incredible! No window, instead a dusty plastic papaya plant was supposed to improve the (dirty) light shaft. The bathroom had mold on the joints, the entire room was only superficially cleaned. Although other rooms (with windows) were free, they didn't want to let us move. Not even for an extra charge. The building is very thinly soundproof. Every time the elevator went (since we were there on the weekend, that was often the case), we heard it in the room, as well as the snoring neighbor and the guests who thundered down the stairs from partying at night. Breakfast was served in a windowless room that also served as a storage area for cleaning utensils, suitcases and/or supplies. The selection and quality were so-so. The staff tried to be friendly, but at some point I thought to myself, if they said "I'm so soooohhhrie" ONE more time, I'll explode. What's the point of someone constantly apologizing but making no attempt to find a remedy/improvement for imponderables? The only thing that was sensational was the location. I wouldn't book the hotel again. There are so many alternative hotels in the old town that are cleaner and focus on the guest.
