Chateau Jasper

Arrived fairly late and we’re new to Jasper. So we decided to eat in for the first night. I knew we were in trouble when the young man at reception put a call through to an extension. His colleague in the back office told him there was no-one in. He merely shrugged and said “stuff happens”, not thinking for one second that he was showing appalling customer service. This was so unlike the usual excellent service we’d received all the way across Canada, I was surprised. So he turned to us. When we asked about the restaurant we were told it was open for breakfast only. And that was what it states on their website. We checked there and then. It doesn’t mention it! So I asked about the bar - was that at least open. “Yes”, he said. “At breakfast”. (I never actually tested that.) He continued to insist that the restaurant was not closed - it was merely only open for breakfast. In the end he shrugged again and said (with no sense of empathy) “Sorry, what can I say?” This was such a shame that this surly, uncaring man is the first face of the hotel, because the service we received from other staff members was much better. They don’t service the rooms, but a request for coffee, etc, was acted on in 5 minutes. I would have preferred real coffee mugs and glasses, but it’s a small point. The rooms themselves are large and comfortable, if a little dated. The hotel is situated about a 10 minute flat walk to the centre to town. And the town has a friendly welcoming feel to it. People would say hello as you walked in. So, sorry, Chateau Jasper, you need to train your reception staff. Or suggest they find a calling outside the hospitality industry.
Maligne Lodge

We spent 5 nights here the end of September, in room 108. The location is good and the mattresses are comfortable. The staff was friendly and responded whenever we asked for something. However, it wasn't as comfortable as we'd hoped. The unit tends to heat up, but has little flow-through ventilation because the two tiny windows in the back have screens are so filthy that air can't get through them. The beds had no top sheet, just a comforter too warm for a late September night. We had to either sleep with no cover or overheat. After the first night we asked for top sheets and were provided those cheerfully. I still had to run the noisy AC much of each night the last week in September. There's a sign asking guests to not wear outdoor shoes inside, but the carpet apparently hadn't been vacuumed before we came, as there were dog kibble and toenail clippings loose on it. The front windows were filthy. A power cord plug blocks the fridge door from opening. The door is reversible, but nobody has bothered to do so. I had to lift the microwave out of the cabinet to plug it in, and the microwave barely fits on the shelf with the plug in place. The privacy curtain on the front window rolls down only partially, because of the position of the chain splice. This can be rather easily adjusted with a ladder and screwdrivers. The electric kettle for heating tea water works, but it no longer shuts off when at a boil. This could be a safety issue. This is an older unit and shows some wear. That's OK, but it also shows a lack of maintenance and the need for an evaluation to see that everything is in good repair and usable.
Jasper East Cabins
4.3/58 Reviews
We stayed in a 2-bedroom unit at Jasper East Cabins for 1-night in early Oct ($449). This is a new resort, constructed in 2018, so everything is fresh, new, clean and impeccably maintained. The cabin, set one road back (no road noise), had a spacious common room with seating area, TV, etc., and a kitchen/dining area with all of the appliances and supplies and a large dining room table. The bedrooms were both the same size, with large, comfortable beds and plenty of storage space. The resort's location, just E of the Park's East Gate, made it a bit remote from the restaurants and stores of Jasper (30 min drive), but next door was the Folding Mountain Brew Pub, rated one of the top three in the Rocky Mountains by some, and just down the road from the sister resort which had a restaurant open for breakfast and dinner. Overall, a pleasant place to stay if you want to avoid the bustle and enormously inflated prices in Jasper but, still a bit expensive for the quality delivered.
Marmot Lodge Jasper

Whistler's Inn

The whole hotel is very out of date, bathroom taps are from the ark. We had a room right opposite the station and the noise of the trains during the night kept us awake. Windows were so dirty you could not see out. No Kettle, told to use the coffee maker to boil water, which left the taste of coffee behind. Staff said the reason no kettles was because they kept getting stolen, and were very rude. No Iron or ironing board either. Would not reccommend. Smallest shampoo and conditioner i have ever seen.

Everything was great from the pool, hot tub and spa. There was just very limited parking and we were driving in a truck. So we had to park in the back in another hotels parking lot. All in all it was a great stay.
