Caledonian Hotel

Great if you have to be in this area, nice bars inside the hotel. It is a bit outdated compared to more modern hotels and personally I don't like carpet flooring too much but it's typical in the older hotels in the UK, at least they were clean and had no bad smell. Supermarket very close by. Metrostation jesmond West around 6 minutes walking distance.

Terrible hotel, extremely rude reception staff, especially the young man who was on duty on the 28/06/2024. Room dirty, even a hand towel left from previous occupant. Breakfast made with cheap ingredients, luke warm and rubbery eggs as they had been left so long. Dirty plates, with dried on food and a third with black hair on. When we were evently hiven keys to our room, we discovered it had been held for the previous guest to hold their luggage, preferential treatment for that guest, bad customer service for us. The luggage was only removed, when we called down and asked that it was removed.I would not recomend this hotel.

It was a perfectly fine room but, ironically, too warm! Whoever says that about a British hotel room?! At least the beds were comfortable. The shower tub has one of those annoying half pieces of glass so water goes all over the floor when you shower but at least the water is warm and there is good pressure. Make sure to ask for extra shampoo, conditioner, and soap - they only left one small bottle of each for the three of us. Breakfast was fine with a good variety. There is only a tiny antique elevator so if you have a lot of luggage, you may have some difficulty.

This hotel is in a very nice area of Newcastl plenty of very good restaurants well within walking distance.

We went to this hotel with Alfa Travel and I don’t think they were used to having coach parties although I believe they have now started. The staff were fantastic and doing their best in a very unorganised situation. Our room on first entering it was a lovely room but very tired looking with shabby furniture, curtains were in a terrible state and the windows peeling. I think who ever made our room up on the first day was called away and it was forgotten about. The towels had been left in a mess the tea tray hadn’t been changed or refilled. There was a disgusting sticky mess on one of the bed side tables and bathroom only partly cleaned. This did improve. The restaurant was very stuffy and we were squashed on to a table of eight which even six people would find a challenge. The food was good but didn’t really cater for vegetarians however I later found out you needed to ask about this. The adjoining bar was extremely noisy and really catered for students in the area. However an attempt to use a separate conference room for entertainment for coach guests was appreciated but not adequate with steps going down into it. Breakfast was in the bar area and really was very unorganised with lots of tables which needed clearing and nowhere for people to sit. Breakfast food was ok. Disability issues. This was my bugbare and truly outrageous I don’t think this hotel caters for disabled people what so ever although there are some ground floor rooms. When we arrived on the coach the entrance is up about six steps through double glass doors and then another door almost impossible and I watched many guests struggle daily. I asked about a disabled entrance and was told round the back of the hotel there was one. My husband walked round and it was 330 steps down a side road full of garages and overflowing bins covered in graffiti. There is a ramp to the back door how ever this door can only be opened from inside the hotel with no bell to alert anyone. There is a lift inside the hotel which only holds two people and my walker just fit but no room for a case or anyone else. This was very difficult lift to work and often if it hadn’t been shut properly on another floor didn’t work at all. Also through out the hotel there are many steps to contend with. I may add the majority of staff were lovely and very helpful which made up for it all thank you.

Having stayed here before we decided to book again. Hotel is easy to find with free car parking at the rear and Jesmond is a great area with bars, restaurants and cafes and only a short hop on the metro into Newcastle. Hotel reception and bar area clean and welcoming. Twin room was ok apart from leaking shower, which meant water covered bathroom floor after showering and had to use towel soak it up. Breakfast ok but staff should monitor the food more, as some hot food ran out and was then waiting 15 mins for more to be cooked and brought out. Would I stay again - yes - but the hotel just need to ensure the room facilities and basics are done well.

Staff were good. Room was a decent size, clean and with good facilities. The area was a very busy student area. I could hear bass music all Sunday evening in my room which was on second floor. Parking is limited in tight spaces at rear of hotel. Breakfast was or good quality.
