What a fantastic hotel! We were recommended to stay at this hotel as a great place to experience Venice. It's very central, but not too close to the tourist hordes around the Piazza San Marco. The hotel is only a few metres from the local water bus stop at Zattere, and the Ali Laguna service to and from the airport. It's in the Dorsoduro district of Venice, right on the Giudecca Canal and wonderful views from the waterfront. Our room was beautiful, and has a waterfront view and an outdoor terrace with table and chairs, also overlooking the canal. The staff are fantastic - very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about helping guests. Top marks to the entire staff! The restaurant is worth traveling to, even if you're not staying at the hotel - it's that good! I especially loved the Lasagna. The Dorsoduro district is much more real Venice and less touristy than around San Marco. La Calcina is close to Venice's only Jazz club - a 12 minute walk - and it is fabulous too! Downsides to La Calcina are few and don't change my verdict! It's stairs only, no elevators, but the staff make sure that's no problem for guests, by moving all luggage for us. The plumbing in the bathroom left a little to be desired - no thermostat on the shower making the temperature a bit erratic - but it was still possible to get a decent shower...and overall, it just didn't matter.
