Do I Need to Fill in the Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC)?

Do I Need to Fill in the Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC)?

Yes. If you are a foreign traveler entering Malaysia, completing the MDAC is a mandatory immigration requirement. You must fill it out online before you land or arrive at the land/sea borders. However, the Malaysian government grants a few specific exceptions. You do not need to fill out the MDAC if you are:

  • A citizen of Singapore.
  • A holder of a Malaysian Permanent Resident (PR) status or a valid Long-Term Pass.
  • A holder of a Diplomatic or Official Passport.
  • A Brunei General Certificate of Identity (GCI) or border facility holder.
  • A Thailand Border Pass or Indonesian Cross-Border Travel Document (PLB) holder.
  • A transit passenger remaining airside without passing through immigration.

If you don't fit into these categories, you must submit your MDAC. For instance, If you are an Indian passport holder, you absolutely need to fill out the MDAC. Even though Malaysia allows visa-free entry for citizens of India for short holiday stays, completing the digital arrival card online remains a strict, mandatory requirement before boarding your flight.

What Is the Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC) and How Does It Work?

What Is the Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC) and How Does It Work?

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is a secure electronic entry form introduced by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. It completely replaces the old, traditional paper landing cards that airlines used to hand out mid-flight.

What Can It Do and How Does It Work?

  • Pre-Screening: It acts as a digital checkpoint, allowing border security to pre-verify basic visitor data before you physically arrive.
  • Speeds Up Clearance: By submitting your passport, travel, and accommodation details beforehand, your profile is already live in the immigration database.
  • Unlocks the Autogates: For eligible travelers from 63 countries (including the US, UK, Australia, Germany, Japan, and South Korea), a successfully submitted MDAC allows you to bypass manual queues and use the lightning-fast automated e-gates at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA Terminal 1 & 2).

How to Fill & Submit Malaysia MDAC Online

How to Fill & Submit Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC) Online

How to Fill & Submit Malaysia Arrival Card (MDAC) Online Source: MDAC Malaysia

The MDAC application is 100% free, official, and online-only via Malaysia’s immigration portal. No third-party agency processing is required. Follow these official steps for error-free submission :

Step 1: Prepare & Disable VPN

Most VPN IP addresses are blocked by the official MDAC system. Turn off all VPN, proxy, or network masking tools before accessing the portal to avoid connection failures . Prepare your passport, travel itinerary, and accommodation details in advance.

Step 2: Access the Official MDAC Portal

Visit the only legitimate official website: imigresen-online.imi.gov.my/mdac/main. Avoid fake third-party websites that charge service fees .

Step 3: Register or Log In

New users register with a valid personal email address and complete email verification. Returning travelers can log in directly with existing credentials .

Step 4: Fill in All Mandatory Fields Accurately

Complete the form with passport-matched information only (no abbreviations or nicknames). Required fields include:

  • Personal details: Full legal name, nationality, date of birth, gender, contact number
  • Passport details: Passport number, issue country, expiry date (minimum 6-month validity required)
  • Travel details: Arrival date, entry mode (air/land/sea), flight/vehicle number, departure country, intended stay duration
  • Local accommodation: Full valid Malaysia address (hotel name, street, city, postcode; private residence or institutional address is also acceptable)
  • Visit purpose: Tourism, business, study, medical visit, or official visit
  • Health & travel declaration: Recent travel history and current health status

Step 5: Review, Submit & Save Confirmation

Double-check all spelling, dates, and passport information (errors cause clearance rejection). Submit the form instantly, then download and save the MDAC confirmation receipt (digital or printed copy) for immigration checks .

When Should I Apply for the Malaysia Arrival Card?

When Should You Submit a Malaysia Arrival Card?

Source: MDAC Malaysia

You must submit your MDAC within three (3) days prior to your arrival in Malaysia.

For example, if you are arriving on a Thursday, you can submit the form anytime starting from Tuesday. Do not submit it earlier than this 3-day window, as the system will not register your arrival date accurately.

Requirements for Entering Malaysia (MDAC & Immigration)

Requirements for Entering Malaysia (MDAC & Immigration)

To prevent any stressful hiccups at the border checkpoint, it is highly useful to look closely at the precise checklist required for both your digital submission and physical immigration clearing.

1. Requirements for the MDAC Submission

To successfully complete the online form, you only need a few pieces of information ready on your device:

  • A valid passport (with details matching your travel document perfectly).
  • Your confirmed flight, bus, or cruise details (including transport numbers).
  • A valid email address to receive your digital registration receipt.
  • The name and complete address of your hotel, resort, or host house in Malaysia.

2. Malaysia Official Entry Requirements at Immigration

When you face the immigration officer at the manual counter or step up to the e-gate, the MDAC alone is not enough. You must satisfy the holistic legal border checks. Here is your ultimate checklist:

  • Valid Passport: Your passport must possess at least 6 months of validity from your exact date of entry into Malaysia.
  • Onward or Return Ticket: You must present a confirmed, valid ticket out of Malaysia (back to your home country or onto a third destination).
  • Sufficient Funds: You may be asked to prove you have enough financial means (cash, credit cards, or bank statements) to sustain yourself during your declared length of stay.
  • The Correct Visa Status: Depending on your country of citizenship, you must possess the correct entry clearance. For instance, citizens of India enjoy a special visa-free exemption policy for tourist stays of up to 30 days; however, Indian travelers must still present their confirmed return ticket and a completed MDAC to clear immigration successfully.

Compare MDAC with eVISA and Visa on Arrival

To help clear up any confusion about the paperwork you might need, study this comparative breakdown:

Document Type

What Is It?

Do I Need It?

How/When to Get It

MDAC (Arrival Card)

A mandatory digital registration form used to track and process traveler itineraries. It is not a visa.

Yes, required for almost all international tourists, regardless of nationality.

Online within 3 days before arriving. Free of charge.

Visa-Free Entry

An automatic waiver allowing certain nationalities to stay for 14, 30, or 90 days without a visa.

Depends on your passport. Many countries (like EU nations, US, ASEAN, China, and India) enjoy visa-exempt tourist stays.

Granted automatically at the border upon presenting your passport.

eVISA / Regular Visa

A formal entry permit required for nationalities that do not have a visa-waiver agreement with Malaysia.

Required only if your specific nationality does not qualify for visa-exempt entry.

Must be applied for online via the official eVISA portal before starting your journey.

Visa on Arrival (VOA)

A specific emergency/short-stay visa category issued directly at the border for very specific target groups or overland routes.

Rarely used by standard tourists now due to the widespread availability of the online eVISA.

Acquired directly at designated entry ports for a fixed fee, provided you meet strict criteria.

Tips and Common Mistakes When Arriving in Malaysia

  • Mistake 1: Confusing the MDAC with a Visa. Many travelers submit the MDAC online and assume they do not need to check visa requirements. If your passport requires an eVISA to enter Malaysia, you must acquire both the visa and the MDAC.
  • Mistake 2: Typing Errors on Passport Numbers. If there is a single digit mismatch between your passport book and your MDAC confirmation PDF, the automated autogates will reject you, and you will be sent to the back of the manual immigration queue. Double-check your numbers!
  • Mistake 3: First-Time Autogate Snags. If your country is eligible for the automated e-gates, keep in mind that on your very first visit to Malaysia, immigration protocols often require you to go through a manual counter first to register and verify your physical biometric fingerprints. On subsequent entries, you can head straight to the autogate.
  • Mistake 4: Carrying Excessive Unreported Cash. If you are carrying cash or monetary instruments equivalent to USD 10,000 or more, you are legally required to declare it on arrival at customs. Failing to do so can result in heavy fines or seizure.

For the first time stayed at Maya Hotel. Overall is good. Suka sangat pool sebab berbumbung. Nak mandi lama pun tak kisah sebab tak panas 👍🏻. Ada kids room 👍🏻. Dalam bilik ada penimbang, so lepas makan boleh lah timbang tengok berat naik ke tak 😃

A historic gem in the heart of Bukit Bintang I’ve always admired this stunning building whenever I passed through Bukit Bintang and finally had the chance to stay for a night. Pros: Location: Super convenient as it’s within walking distance to Pavilion Mall. Parking: Guests can park for a reasonable flat rate of RM 5. Atmosphere: The building architecture is beautiful, and the lobby is truly grand and impressive. Pool: The swimming pool is large and was one of my favorite parts of the stay. Cons/Points to Note: Aging: As it’s an older hotel, you can definitely see some signs of age that are hard to hide. Pool Hours: The pool is only open from 8 AM to 8 PM, which is a bit disappointing compared to other hotels that stay open until 10 or 11 PM. Breakfast: The breakfast buffet didn't quite meet my expectations, though it wasn't bad.

Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night before heading to Malacca, and we truly wished we could have stayed a few more days. We booked a Deluxe Two-Bedroom Apartment with a kitchen at a very reasonable price. It provided plenty of space for our family of four, making it a comfortable choice for travelling with two children. One thing we absolutely have to mention is the bedroom. The room was wonderfully dark at night, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We all had a fantastic night's sleep, which is exactly what every parent needs while travelling! The rooftop infinity pool was another highlight of our stay. The view was absolutely stunning. Although it was a little crowded at times, it was still a very enjoyable experience. We would definitely consider staying here again on our next visit to Kuala Lumpur.

We had an excellent stay at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur. From the moment we arrived, the hotel offered a perfect blend of comfort and luxury. The rooms were beautifully designed, spacious, and exceptionally comfortable, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring the city. The facilities were outstanding, and the overall atmosphere felt modern, elegant, and welcoming. One of the highlights of our stay was the food. The breakfast and dining options were excellent, with a wide variety of delicious dishes and high-quality ingredients. The location is also fantastic, with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the main attractions in Bukit Bintang. We would highly recommend PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur to anyone looking for a luxurious and comfortable stay with amazing food and excellent service.

The hotel Pacific Express Central Market prime position is its biggest selling point—it is perfectly situated within close proximity to Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek LRT, and it so near Central Market(walking distance less than a mins. To petaling street(china town) 10mins When it comes to dining, there is absolutely no need to worry at all, even if you’re not a particularly picky eater. The area surrounding hotel is teeming with a diverse array of food stores, local eateries and cozy restaurants, offering an extensive selection of delicious cuisines to suit all tastes, you’ll find plenty of wonderful dining options just a short walk away. Overall my stay at Pacific Express Hotel Central Market was perfect.(except the water heater is not function well, water flow hot for a while then cold again rm8521), other than that the room is spacious, with small refrigerator, nothing to compare with such nice room and reasonable price. The unrivaled location, convenient dining choices combine to create a truly wonderful living experience. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur, and I will definitely choose to stay here again. Room is perfect clean, with a large lobby, good security. Must try!

The best part of this hotel is definitely the rooftop pool. The panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur from above is beautiful, especially during sunset and at night. It’s the highlight of the stay. The hotel is also about a 10-minute walk from public transport, making it fairly convenient for getting around the city. Unfortunately, the hotel is starting to show its age and is in need of renovation. The elevator situation was also disappointing. There are three elevators, but only two were operating during our stay, and they were very slow. We spent a lot of time waiting, especially during peak hours. The front desk staff were quiet but helpful whenever we needed assistance. However, the security staff at the entrance could be much more attentive. They mostly stood by the door without greeting guests or offering to help with luggage. For a Hilton-branded hotel, I expected a warmer welcome and more proactive service. Overall, I feel the management needs to improve the guest experience. While the rooftop view is fantastic, the lack of attention to service, aging facilities, and slow elevators do not meet the standard I would expect from a Hilton brand.

Hotel Review Location: Excellent—just across the road from Kampung Baru food area, very convenient for foodies. Check-in: Allowed early check-in at 1:30 PM despite 3 PM standard time due to room availability. Much appreciated. Staff: Special mention to the staff member resembling celebrity singer Hafiz—excellent service, kept everything smooth and entertaining. Kudos. Room (1619): Connecting room arrangement was inconvenient; needed to prop the door open (1619,1620) TV in father's room not functioning (1618) Major issue: Strong sewage smell in bathroom—disturbing and needs immediate attention Toiletries: Initially not refilled—no lotion, body wash in my room; no shower gel or conditioner in dad's room. Staff replaced with hand-packed amenities. Appreciated the gesture. Food & Dining: Breakfast buffet: RM37.10—excellent value; surprisingly good nasi goreng (first time I enjoyed it) In-room dining: Nasi Goreng Tamu was good, but sambal prawn was too sweet Hotel breakfast preferred over outside options—area dominated by nasi padang, which isn't to our taste Overall: Okay stay. Responsive service on toiletries and excellent staff, but bathroom odor and room setup issues need fixing.

Booked this hotel for a trip to Kuala Lumpur with my mom, and it was a very satisfying stay! Service: When we checked in, the staff member proactively helped us carry our luggage to the room, which was very thoughtful and welcoming. The front desk also specially arranged a twin room for us. The check-in process, which required English, went smoothly. Hygiene: The room was clean and tidy, and housekeeping did a great job cleaning every day, even folding our clothes. Facilities: My mom particularly loved this hotel because it provided plenty of hangers, which made it easy for us to dry our washed clothes. All other facilities were also well-equipped, and the air conditioning system was very convenient. Environment: From our room, we could see the KL Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers, and the night view was absolutely beautiful. The hotel is located right next to the bustling Pavilion Kuala Lumpur mall, and also near the popular McDonald's landmark. It’s convenient for getting around, dining, and drinking, and the area is very lively at night, being close to the Bukit Bintang monorail and MRT stations.

Here’s your full review combined and polished: The hotel is conveniently located near the city centre, making it easy to get a taxi or Grab to KLCC. Whether you’re visiting for a holiday or a business trip, the location works well. Right next to the hotel, there’s a 7-Eleven and a shopping mall, so getting food and daily essentials is very convenient. For the price per night, the room is incredibly good value. It’s spacious, clean, and suitable for families too. The lobby looks great, and overall the stay feels very worthwhile for what you pay. The hotel also has its own restaurant and a swimming pool, which are nice added perks — although I didn’t get the chance to try them. I would definitely come back again.

The room was clean and comfortable, and the location is excellent with direct access to Sunway Putra Mall. However, breakfast for my children was not included and required additional payment. The swimming pool could also be better maintained. The biggest issue was the bathroom drainage. Water did not flow properly to the drain, leaving the floor constantly wet and slippery. Unfortunately, my son slipped and fell because of this. Parking was another disappointment. Guests are charged RM13 per day, which cost us RM39 for a 3-day stay. Complimentary parking for long-stay guests would be appreciated. Overall, a pleasant stay with a great location, but improvements are needed in bathroom safety, parking policy, and family-friendly breakfast options.

Stayed here for one night and honestly had a great experience.

The room size was more than adequate and it was quiet. It's located at the very end of the alley behind the Shangri-La. There's a small 7-Eleven downstairs. When we first got to our triple room, the duvet felt a bit damp, so we asked to switch rooms and they happily accommodated us. The water from the shower tended to overflow into the toilet area, which was a bit annoying. There's a small kitchen and a dining table, perfect for enjoying coffee and breakfast in the morning.

TLDR: Ceylonz is a great hotel, but the provider (Five Senses) is not. Book a different provider if you want to stay at Ceylonz. (Trip.com does not let me post videos, refer to the pictures below) Initial room conditions: When we first entered the room we encountered these things: - Leftover jacket from the previous guest(?) - stains on the chairs - water stains on the wardrobe - dead ants in the wardrobe - a flickering light Service: Because we chose to stay for 7 nights, we had a 1 free make-up room offered to us which we appreciated. However when we flagged up the issues we found on the first day, they gave us a make-up room on the second day and consumed our free make-up room without our choice. We wanted to use it in the middle of the trip like the 4th day. Because of this we had no toilet paper, tissue box was empty, towels were not replaced. After the 2nd day, they no longer replied to our texts when we enquired about using the sports lounge, requesting a makeup room, getting more toilet paper. Very bad service. After their make-up room, they removed the jacket and cleaned the seat stains, but they did not fix the light or clean the dead ants in the wardrobe. We understand fixing a light might not be possible but the ants were easily removable and we did it ourselves after they left. It felt like they were cutting corners as they also did not replace our tissue box, clean the dead ants or clean the water stains on the wardrobe. Ceylonz: The hotel comes with - nice pool, - 2 gym rooms with great views, - a minimart at the ground floor, - amazing location, walking distance from Bukit Bintang's Pavilion Room: - the amenities provided are not the same for every room, the last time we came there was a water dispenser and pull-out kitchen, this time there isn't (same five senses at ceylonz, same room type) - spacious - tall ceiling - well equipped - bay window - the walls are relatively soundproof so you cannot hear other rooms but the door is not and the hallway is very audible from inside the room, we can hear people chatting, checking in, pulling luggages Bed: - not soft, hard bed with springs - pillows and blanket is okay - uncomfortable bed We would have given this place a glowing review if they: - Stuck to their 1 complimentary makeup room offered - service: replied to our enquiries at all after the 2nd day - better room cleanliness/make-up room diligence: cleaned the dead ants and the water stains on the wardrobe

The room was clean and comfortable but the temperature control was unsatisfactory. Despite multiple attempts to adjust it, the room remained at an uncomfortably warm, room temperature. While the breakfast selection itself was adequate, the 40-minute wait to be seated was unacceptable and reflects poor crowd management. Furthermore, scheduling the café’s renovation from 1st to 5th May was a poor decision. Doing so during a long weekend and rain rave festive period significantly impacted guest experience and contributed to the delays.

Booked two rooms, stayed four nights. The rooms look rather dated and do not seem to be refurbished. We checked in late at night around 10ish pm, and not long after checking in, there were problems with one of the rooms, and we requested a change of room. Not sure if the hotel was really full, as we were only given a new room a good 15-18 hours the following day, presumably after guests checked out. As one member in my group was sick (almost warded at the hospital), I spent a HIGHLY uncomfortable 18 hours in the room with the sick member. We really badly needed a comfortable room, but were stuck in one with a pretty bad issue. The manager, Mr Adari, who checked me in the first night, attempted to rectify the situation by offering a late check-out option and access to their lounge. Additionally, a fruit plate was provided in the room we were moved to. The new room also faced the twin towers. While I appreciate the recovery efforts, I feel that the hotel fell short of the comfort and standards the Shangri-la brand provides. Would I book this hotel again the next time I visit - probably not.

This was our second time choosing The Ritz-Carlton for a special occasion, and once again, it did not disappoint. This visit was to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The last time we stayed here was for my birthday, and I still remember how exceptional the service and overall experience were. Because of that wonderful memory, we decided to return. Prior to our arrival, I had only requested a small birthday cake for my husband. To our surprise, the hotel went far beyond our expectations. When we entered the room, we found beautiful balloon decorations, adorable towel art, a thoughtful birthday card, a delicious chocolate cake, and rose petals elegantly arranged around the room. We were both genuinely touched and grateful for the effort and care put in by the team. These thoughtful details made the celebration even more memorable, and we took plenty of photos to cherish the wonderful memories created during our stay. The hotel is also very well located in the heart of the city. A connected bridge from Level 1 provides easy access to Bukit Bintang within just a few minutes’ walk. Having stayed at several nearby hotels before, I can confidently say that The Ritz-Carlton remains our preferred choice. The location is convenient, the service is outstanding, and the room cleanliness is consistently excellent. Thank you to the entire team for making our stay so special and memorable. We truly appreciate the warm hospitality and attention to detail. We will definitely be back again for our next celebration.

The location is fantastic, right on Bukit Bintang Street. The subway and monorail are nearby, making it super convenient to get anywhere. It gets really lively at night. There's a mall just 50 meters away with tons of food options and all sorts of brand-name stores. The hotel itself is very clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. However, the curtains in my room were a bit odd; the blackout curtain was on the outside, and the sheer curtain was on the inside. So, to block out the light, you had to open the sheer curtain first. It really should be the other way around. Also, my room was incredibly cold. I called them to fix it, and even after setting the thermostat to 30 degrees, it was still a bit chilly, though much better than before. The lights in my room were controlled by a remote-like device on the wall (see picture) instead of a traditional switch. The problem is, if you wake up at night, it's easy to press the wrong button. On the bright side, the pool water was very clean. Overall, I'm quite satisfied. If I visit Kuala Lumpur again, I would definitely stay at this hotel.

Service: There's a front desk, making check-in and check-out very convenient. Environment: It's 400 meters from the subway station, a 15-minute walk to Pavilion KL, and other attractions are also nearby. Facilities: The hotel doesn't provide disposable toiletries or slippers, but it does have a washing machine. Hygiene: The hygiene is quite poor. The bathroom had a strange smell, and there were especially many cockroaches, countless cockroaches.

The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic, very close to both the Petronas Twin Towers and Pavilion Mall. It rained on our second day, but the hotel has a skybridge directly connected to the mall, so we didn't even need an umbrella! The breakfast and bars are also excellent, especially the rooftop bar. You get a direct view of the Twin Towers, and the visual effect is stunning. There's a handsome Malaysian waiter named Yugesh at the bar who recommended several super delicious cocktails to us, and they were all great value for money. On the day we left, I accidentally knocked over a shower gel bottle while rushing to check out. When we checked out, the two handsome guys at the front desk kept asking if we were hurt and said not to worry about the bottle. It really warmed my heart – the service at a five-star hotel truly is a cut above the rest! 👍👍

Flora by Crossroads Hotel is in a very good and convenient location, which makes it easy for travelers who are always on the go. However, the room cleanliness could be improved. The tiles had visible mold, the bed sheets had stains, and the window did not appear to be properly cleaned. On a positive note, the receptionist was very nice, respectful, and accommodating. Overall, if you are traveling, spending most of your time outside, and simply need a place to store your belongings and rest for a while, this hotel can still be a practical option.
