Islay House

Islay House

📍 House, Bridgend, Islay
★★★ 8.0 (40 reviews)

"We had to book a last minute room here due to work getting done at home. The price wasn’t too bad for the room considering, it was warm and comfortable enough. Housekeeping severely lacking as it was coated with dust and the window sill was especially filthy. Nonetheless the room did the job, bath was nice with plenty of hot water. the bar was pleasant and reasonably priced. Of course the place needs a serious upgrade and a proper team of staff for such a historic building. (Staff on were fine but barely spoke English) It has so much potential and I feel it could be on par with the likes of Prestonfield. Instead of being run like a budget chain hotel."

"We enjoyed the privacy as it was at least a km away from the main road. A very nice hideaway if you want to get away from the bustling town. One thing though, please ensure you have your own car/transport covered as public transportation on Islay is not as convenient versus a normal city. Overall, a great place to stay! We’ll be back!"

Port Charlotte Youth Hostel

Port Charlotte Youth Hostel

📍 Main St, Islay
★★★ 9.4 (19 reviews)

"What a fantastic hostel. In a former distillery, beautifully located right on a sandy bay with views across the loch. Clean throughout, comfortable beds, well equipped and an extremely helpful and kind warden. Very pleasant lounge with lots of reading matter. One of the very best hostels I've stayed in."

Port Charlotte Hotel

"An absolute GEM of a hotel, positioned on the edge of the rocky, sandy shore with spectacular views across the loch to the Paps of Jura. We were a little apprehensive as all the rooms are billed as 'dog friendly' but the extremely comfortable room was immaculate and smelled beautiful and clean. In fact the whole hotel was kept extremely clean. Kudos to the housekeeping team! The atmosphere in the cozy traditional bar was spot on. Lively and fun without being overbearing. The staff could not be any friendlier; they're so welcoming and nothing too much trouble. As for the food...oh MY! If I could have smuggled their talented chef out in my suitcase, I would. The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful and dinner was the stuff of dreams. Dinner is a total MUST DO. Imaginative meal choices, beautifully presented and definitely something a bit different. The lovely Lorna recommended the saffron rice pudding with cinnamon sugar and Arran ice cream. One of the tastiest puddings we've ever had. Hopefully we will return to spectacular Islay and if we do, here is where we will stay. Highly recommend."

Islay House ★★★
"This was the worst Airbnb home I have ever stayed in: it. This experience was a blatant example of 1) false advertising 2) breach of baseline health & safety standards of a property that is hosting paying guests 3) disappointing hospitality and customer service. I would not recommend this home to anyone and strongly advise Airbnb ban this host from their platform or at the very least, update the listing to accurately reflect the state of the property. See below for a detailed overview of why the Islay house offered no version of the “comfort of a large home,” “consistency of a luxury hotel” or “conveniences of a 5 start hotel” as outlined in the Airbnb listing. 1. FALSE ADVERTISING - The Airbnb listing spelled out a number of amenities that were not available and oversold the state of the “luxury” historic home. Examples include: a) private beach, b) breakfast baked for the guests, c) Big Kitchen used as a bakery, d) all new heating plumbing, electrics and fibers throughout - Specially on c) the kitchen advertised on the listing was completely inoperable and not even accessible due to flooding and other construction. Instead of the catering size kitchen that was shown in the photos (multiple Arga ovens, counter space, etc), the actual kitchen was a make shift room not a single working oven or stove, leaking commercial dishwasher, dirt and grime on all surfaces, no kitchen knives or prep utensils, and a giant hole in the wall. There wasn’t even a working coffee machine. After raising the issue with the house manager, a new oven was brought in that was also useable due to power issues. The only working device in the kitchen for cooking was a hot plate - Specially on d): there was no heating throughout the common areas of the house, WiFi was barely usable and due to the storm, the power in the dining rooms has gone out. Only upon multiple requests were space heaters provided for the bedrooms and additional lamps provided for some of the working sockets. The only working fireplace to generate heat was a small furnace in the entrance hall 2. BREACH OF HEALTH AND SAFTEY - All throughout the home, the carpets were stained and ceilings cracked throughout due flooding; a number of the bathrooms had mildew, one bathtub leaked and was unusable, and the master bedroom had slugs. I wish the last comment was a joke but beginning on the first night of our stay, we noticed slime trails all over our luggage and sweaters - on the third day, we woke up to a large slug crawling out from under the bed - As mentioned above, the only way to access the advertised kitchen was through a back staircase that had flooded. In order to access the kitchen that was available, one of the entrances led you through a part of the home that the listing describes as “remote, inaccessible and unrenovated.” As such, it was a freezing cold, dark section of the house that incredibly unpleasant to experience as guests who were expecting a safe and light kitchen. 3. HOSPITALITY AND"

"Comfortable hotel on Islay but a bit out of the way for anything. Golf course and beach are available but for whisky focused visits, better off to be at Bowmore or Port Ellen"

"This was a clean and welcoming hostel on the whole but it has a slightly passive aggressive over use of notices. I arrived late (which they were accommodating about). The next morning i made sure to strip my bed and check out by 10 in compliance with the emails I got. i started to make breakfast and suddenly I was breezily told the kitchen was closed for cleaning from 10 to 5 and this was in the emails I received. I had not received emails to say this! this is ridiculous and very unwelcoming. I have not had this experience in yHA. the kitchen was spotless already and didn’t require closing for 7 hours unless you want to get rid of guests. the sitting room was very musty and I have concerns about damp in the building and inadequate ventilation"

"Stopped for a quick lunch en route to the ferry. A very warm welcome with fires lit in the bar. Soup and sandwiches the order of the day were all very nice and we were even offered a box for the unfinished ones. This is a place where we could easily have settled in for the afternoon (the loung looked equally inviting) but ferries don't wait that long. Thank you for the lovely but short visit to your hotel."
