What stood out to me most about this Ryokan was the quality of the service. You felt completely cared for by a warm and very genuine approach to hospitality which is rare. This is a small family owned establishment with the distinctive mark of one person's vision and style that very much embraces the Zen ethos. The moss garden, lovingly mapped and explained, the three (three!) libraries, all distinctive and exciting to be in, the elegant simplicity of the traditional rooms, excellent food and of course the hot baths both on your balcony and in the onsen and more mark this out as a truly special place and unique experience. I very much hope to return one day.

Perhaps the most relaxing, serene, architecural wonder - complete with the most understated yet outstanding service. Breakfasts and kaiseki dinners were superb - the website can never do this idyllic place justice -from the moment you pull up to the entry to the time the staff wave you off when you leave - every single detail has been given a lot of attention.

What initially looks like a simple inn is anything but. Beneath the layers is an incredibly sophisticated, refined and world-class operation. The magic lies in the fact that, on the service, it all looks so effortless. But given the quality of the entire operation, from the world-class architecture, the immaculate Japanese style rooms, the mind-blowing Kaiseki dinner and Japanese breakfast, and the thoughtful, personalised service, you can be sure that a huge amount of effort is being expended by each and every team member. How they pull this magic trip off is a thing of wonder. The result is a Zen like atmosphere throughout, with all the trappings and creature comforts of an ultra-luxurious hotel. I would highly recommend this to solo travellers, couples and families alike, so long as you're looking to switch off, connect with yourself or each-other, and enjoyed a very refined and well thought out conceptualisation of Japanese hospitality and luxury.

A most beautiful modern ryokan in an idyllic setting. The service here is wonderful, thoughtfulness in every step. Rooms are very generous, and guests can soak in the private outdoor onsen basking in the moonlight. Breakfast and dinner are fantastic showcases of the local fruit and vege and meat.

The highlight of our trip to Japan and seriously one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed! One stayed here one night as a treat for my husband's birthday. While it is a very fancy place, it is very welcoming and the green of the stunning gardens immediately makes you relax. We booked the tatami style room and has our own private onset and it was just gorgeous. The staff were incredibly welcoming and we did a tea ceremony with the owners who were incredibly gracious. The dinner was also amazing and super high class - they gave us champagne for my husband's birthday which was very lovely. We made the most of staying as such a special place and also had massages which were incredible. This is a very special experience and place to stay and if you want a special treat stay here and appreciate it - places like this shouldn't be taken for granted as if you can stay here, you are very lucky.

One of the best experiences of my life, worth every penny! The peace and calm, the architecture, the food, and most of all, the service and love and care from the owners and staff were truly remarkable. Marta was incredible and professional and warm with emails leading up to our trip, and checking upon all of our needs. We got some of the best sleep of our life, and thoroughly enjoyed the facilities, the room, the onsen, and massage. We cannot wait to come here again. Outstanding.

The room I stayed in this time was fresh green. The room has an open-air bath where you can open the window, so you can take a bath while looking at the fresh greenery, what a luxury! Away from the hustle and bustle, time passes slowly and leisurely. I felt happy and relaxed. For me, coming from Kyoto, dinner was OK, but breakfast was very good. The staff are also full of hospitality and are properly trained. The price is high, but I think it's worth it.

Great hotel, everything is beautiful, but ones feels a little bit like in a museum, as there is a lack of client perspective. Food is very good but insufficient from a western point of view, being restricted to japanese portions. From breakfast to dinner there is no food of fruits available anywhere and you have to go to a bouring nearby village to find some low quality restaurants. Service is great with the exception of the european recepcionist that are a bit arrogant. In general you have a feeling of not belonging, even you feel a little oppresed by the strict hotel rules

This place is worth the splurge. There are many hotels that are decorated with a theme in mind, but I’ve never stayed anywhere that made me feel like the hotel itself IS a modern art installation. There’s a coherent message — their singular vision and interpretation of what an onsen oasis is. I wanted to spend hours wondering the halls alone contemplating philosophy. It’s INTJ paradise. I’m not sure how much details I want to go into in this review because we didn’t know too much about the property when we booked. The shock, the discovery, the surprise was integral to the experience. (And the pictures do not do this place justice at all). This place is my new standard for Forbes 5 star properties. In 30 years of traveling, I can’t think of another hotel that we would literally travel across the ocean to stay in again — not to visit the city, but just stay in the hotel. We will definitely be back. Oh BWT. The dinners were Micheline quality.
