Artelo

Artelo

📍 201 Birch Street, Kennett Square

"Upon arrival, neither of the 4-digit check-in codes worked. Just so happens that there was a young man in a white truck on the property watering plants and he provided us with a direct number to Jen, the Manager. After 5 voicemail messages between that young gentleman, myself and my dear friend, Jen FINALLY called us back and blamed the INCORRECT entry code numbers on Trip.com NOT communicating with Artelo (the hotel) staff. It was 91 degrees and took 30 minutes before we received NEW entry codes to get in to our respective rooms. Jen never once offered complimentary snacks or drinks to make up for this inconvenience. THEN, to add insult to injury, the next morning we wake up to 10 CONSTRUCTION VEHICLES IN THE PARKING LOT working on another hotel being built within feet of the place we were staying and were NEVER told that we would encounter this situation. In general, the Artelo hotel TOTALLY LACKS curb appeal because it is just one large black-topped parking lot in front of the place and then ADD IN CONSTRUCTION noise, the overall experience was a BIG DISAPPOINTMENT! Would NEVER RECOMMEND this place to ANY one, ever!"

"Honestly the worst place I have ever stayed that billed itself as a 4 or 5 star hotel. This is what happens when someone who has good taste thinks that they can just open a hotel like this with zero experience. You simply cannot now. You just can't. It's so glaringly obvious that they have no experience at all. If they do I would be very surprised. Horrible. If you'd like to know why I wrote a very detailed google review. I would not recommend this hotel at all. The client care is nonexistent and they are clearly totally inexperienced in that regard. I would also caution single women against staying here. It did not feel secure. The passcode they use for your room is very very easily guessed by delivery drivers. I just didn't feel safe and it was odd as I was so away from the city. Lastly, I mentioned that I found a bug in my bed which I did. I was shocked but it happened. I mentioned it and the owner did not even ask me details or say "ok we will have someone look into that thanks for letting us know" nope. They just wrote a long email rebutting every one of my concerns. That highlights to me that I was correct and they do not have experience in hospitality. I would never dream of sending that to a client. It came across as passive aggressive, dismissive, and just rude. It was just amateur hour. Do not stay here in my opinion."

The Bookhouse Hotel

📍 130 S Union St, Kennett Square

"In early May we stayed in a lovely updated sister property--Bookhouse at Faunbrook--in West Chester, PA. Our room (Darlington) was spacious and very comfortable. As its name suggests, it has an extensive and interesting collection of books for guests to borrow. We have visited the Brandywine Valley area before and found this to be a good base from which to reach many of the local attractions. We appreciated the variety of restaurants available in downtown West Chester, while being able to retreat to the quieter environment of the hotel. On-site parking is a welcome feature. We will definitely consider returning."

"Located just off the high street, this self-serve hotel was a really pleasant surprise for us. Our room (the Watch Maker) was tastefully updated and very clean. The king-sized bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was very spacious. The sitting room in the front of the suite was an added plus and provided a good vantage point to the street. Checking in and checking out was seamless. Well done to whoever runs this place!"

The Bookhouse Hotel ★★
"Mixed feelings about the Bookhouse Hotel. The owners obviously tried but there were a lot of misses in the Secret Garden suite we occupied. The main space, out of which the kitchenette, bathroom, lounge, and second bedroom are accessed is a bedroom! Still can't get my head why they didn't make it the lounge... this means that for anything I wanted or needed (a tea, resting in the lounge, using the bathroom...), I had to go through my elderly friends' bedroom... Other "not-thought-through" details: no switch by the bed in the main bedroom for the reading lights. You have to get back up. No space for a glass of water at night by the bed. No hanging space in the main bedroom. Rooms are noisy, which I don't mind personally but may bother others. Finally, as advertised on the website, the rooms are not ADA compliant. They are also not suitable for people with reduced mobility. However, when my friend called to check how practical/impractical the suite was, the staff didn't specify there were steps to the bathroom and kitchenette too, or no anti-slip mat in the bathroom. It would have been the staff volunteered a bit more information in response to my friend's inquiry so they could make an informed decision. Otherwise, the beds are comfy, the toiletries nice, the towels thick, and the overall atmosphere very pleasant."
