Tri Century Mill Suites

Tri Century Mill Suites

📍 150 Mill Street, Carleton Place

"It was after dark, in the dead of winter, when I arrived at the Tri Century Mill Suites. This *almost* brand-new hotel, on a tiny island, in Carleton Place, Ontario, is quite unassuming when you get your first look. You’re not certain what to expect. And the cognitive dissonance when you walk inside is dazzling. The outside, in daytime, looks almost like a castle. Two intertwined spaces…one of brick; one of stone…coming together to make magic. This property offers both a hotel space and a living space. You could stay for a short time, or make it your new home. Either way, you’re in for an unexpected treat when you discover this getaway. The inside is as resplendent as the outside atmosphere. Open spaces, a combination of cathedral and vaulted ceilings, and plenty of stone and wood all combine to provide the overall aesthetic of having just landed in Europe on holiday. The decor is simple, elegant, but not daunting. It’s overwhelmingly beautiful and yet feels like home. An elevator, with a large, glass window, allows glimpses of the inner workings here. It is a very smooth ride in an older building, which is perfect for those who are tired of waiting for “which elevator” and how long. Every aspect of my stay was special. The room was small but included a fully functioning kitchenette and full sized fridge. The bed and bedding were very comfortable and high quality. There was a surprisingly large…and openable…window, which offered views of the water rushing by the island. Now, let me talk about the bathroom. Excellent, fluffy towels. A toilet that flushes! Hot water! You may think I’m joking, but it’s incredibly difficult to find a hotel with a properly functioning toilet and actual hot water. And, the cherry on top…the shower. I could have lived in that shower. The showerhead is completely misleading, in that it looks like it would never have acceptable water pressure. But wow!! Absolutely delicious shower…yes, delicious. You might wonder, at this point, if I’m related to the owners of this fantastic property. And I can absolutely say no, I’m not. But this hotel is owned by…and obviously lovingly cherished by…a kind, generous, and inspiring couple. They’ve been working on the project for many years, putting so much love and energy into every little detail. And their kids are deeply involved, as well…proving their parental talent, which is also involved in the huge renovation process. I came to the Tri Century Mill Suites as a homeless person needing a break. What I encountered there was a loving family, who put everything they could into reinventing a beautiful property. Did I mention that they’re also pet friendly? This feature, alone, makes it worth the travel! It is obvious, when you finish your stay…they are not only providing a place to sleep. They are also creating space for food, drinks, and special events. And, as a former wedding photographer, I can easily foresee this space becoming a huge draw for local couples, for tourists"

Clyde Hall Bed and Breakfast ★★★

📍 131 Mill St, Lanark

"A spectacularly beautiful location in Lanark, and the B&B itself was beautifully decorated so as to make each of us feel warm and welcome. Outstanding breakfasts, served by our lovely hostess and host, was a wonderful way to start our days. A two minute walk to some of the town's shops, and just a two minute drive to Timber Run Golf Course! A little sunshine and poolside chatter after our day on the links... Overall, Clyde Hall is an absolutely lovely venue for friends to gather. We have already planned our next visit. Thank you Liisa and Robert!"

"We arrived late in the evening and was greeted by the night reception. There are many ample parking and we entered from the back of the hotel. The hotel is huge and fronting a river. Our room is facing the river and we discovered an amazing view from the balcony of our room. Although the hotel is outdated but it is clean and comfortable. The hotel location is a good 40min drive south of Ottawa Premium outlet and a good stop over for Toronto destination."

"Especially friendly. You need to use boiled instant noodles. The boss personally came to explain that you can use the microwave oven or coffee machine to boil water, and finally find an electric kettle to send it over."
