"We just had a trip for my mother’s 60th birthday organised by AfricaStay. The party that we had was once in a lifetime. Thank you Karafuu. Although the water pressure and temperature was inconsistent, the power often visibly switched between solar and grid, and the WiFi was completely off the for a full day we had an unforgettable stay at Karafuu. I attribute the magic of the resort to the staff, whom after 3 days back home I miss terribly! Jackson and Nurdin from the animation team kept me thoroughly entertained, dancing and busy all day, I loved watching how they interacted with other guests too — their joy really was infectious. You must do aqua gym with them. A shout out to the Kappa Club boys as well, who also added some magic to our trip, especially James, Inno and Abdoul! At the restaurant during mealtimes Julius, Ally and Lucia never failed to make me laugh and smile. At the bar Joel, Erasto, Ramadani, Rojast, Rizi and the rest of the team were always so considerate and caring. I hope management realises how much of the essence of Karafuu comes from its people. Located 1.5 hours from the airport, it was worth the ride getting there! Make sure you’re there for dinner on Friday night - and try the Zanzibar bread."

"This hotel is about a 90 minute drive from the airport. I couldn’t find much feedback on it in my research but decided to take a chance on it anyway. WOW, it’s so beautiful. The setup is more of a bed and breakfast type accommodation. The property is a lot bigger than I anticipated and it’s very quiet. Very few people walking the beach/sellers bothering you. There are 2 buildings to choose from. I wanted Villa Kidosho as it’s a little more private (only 2 rooms) but it was booked so we stayed in Asili House (4 rooms) and not at all disappointed. The bedroom is air conditioned with a fan and has an oceanfront private balcony. The bathroom is open air so it’s a bit warm and humid but not unbearable. The staff, wow they are so friendly. Our butlers, Tito and Hisham were awesome! Tito was there to welcome us very late at night and we instantly formed a connection with him. We loved him! This accommodation also has activities included like an open air cinema, foosball, volleyball, kayaking, snorkeling, darts, outdoor gym and spa services (which are extra). They have the cutest little turtle farm that made my animal loving heart happy. They accommodated my dairy allergy very well! The food has been the best we’ve had in Africa. We never ordered anything we didn’t like. Tried authentic Vietnamese food and loved it so much I got something every night. The only “negatives” for us was there’s very little shade by the pool chairs and the shower is a rain head only. I hate rain heads and really wish they had a wand option LOL. Big bonus, check out is at 10:30a but our flight was at 10pm. They had a space for us to still spend the day in with a bed, table and chairs and separate area with a sink and shower. Talk about thoughtful! We thoroughly enjoyed our time at this hotel and hope to make the trip back here in the next few years. After 3 visits you get to plant a tree and after 4, you get to leave your hand prints. Such a thoughtful way to keep their guests part of the property."

"This was probably the nicest meal we had in Zanzibar! Super fresh, great flavours and a really nice option of food. Views are stunning and the vibe is great. Highly recommend! We even came back again since it was so much better than other nearby restaurants. I got the pad Thai both times and the piri prawns for starter and my fiancé had the beef tatatiki which was like a whole beef fillet and the butter chicken curry! Super delicious."

Karafuu Beach Resort & Spa ★★★★★
"Every single staff member was wonderful from arrival especially the treatment by Supa at reception and dining staff & chefs- Julius was amazing and then all the animation staff particularly Jackson and Nurdin keeping us entertained and fit after all the plentiful food and drinks. The bar staff were exceptional Ramadani, Joel and Rojast. Accommodating and kind with so much love shared across all the services. Meeting, talking and dancing with the Maasai especially Annanas was a life experience. Snorkelling - seeing the sea life in the coral especially the starfish was amazing."

"What an amazing place. Even before we arrived there I had been impressed. I wrote several emails to the owner, Inge, and received replies almost by return. All her replies were helpful and answered my queries. We were blown away with this wonderful place. They had built the hotel from scratch and it is obvious that they have thought of everything. Each detail is worked out. Even having a place to charge our phones which is always convenient. The rooms are perfect and all different. We had the 2 rooms in Kidoshi which were rather Arabic and 2 rooms in Asili House which were more African. Beautiful toiletries where you could choose the scent for your bath and also for your room. Very comfortable beds and every amenity. There is a cabinet outside the room to get cold drinks at all times. There is too much to mention but it was all perfect. Management team Inge and Tim clearly care a great deal about the hotel and maintaining extremely high standards. They were always very friendly and helpful to us - both throughout our stay and over email in response to questions Perhaps best of all - the service from the butlers. The butler team was simply amazing, such lovely people, all with professional yet personable service. The attention to detail and effort put into service each day and night was amazing. The staff are helpful and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. You can also play football, darts, boule, ladder golf and volleyball with the staff. The rooms are immaculate and cleaned regularly. Breakfast is from a vast choice and can be eaten anywhere. The all-day menu contains anything you might want. There is a new dinner menu with many choices every night. All delicious. We were an extended family of 9 people of varying ages and there was always something for all of us. Sometimes so much it was difficult to choose. The facilities are plentiful - spacious grounds, lots of sunbeds, hammocks, daybeds etc. for a small amount of people (only 4 rooms). The grounds are so well-kept and beautifully designed. It is hard to describe how perfectly balanced this place is The location is on the beach. The tides go in and out quite a long way. It is interesting to walk on the sand (in reef shoes provided by the hotel) and see all the sea urchins, brittle stars and water snakes stranded in pools. We went on a Dhow boat and snorkelled with lots of fish, clams and anemones etc. We then went on the boat to an area full of star fish. There are other interesting trips we did to Stone Town, on quad bikes to a village, a spice tour and visit to the National Park to see Red Colobus monkeys. We didn’t want to leave and all want to return. I had hoped that my family would have a holiday of a lifetime………..they did!! Thank you so much "

"Very nice place to spend your holidays. It is well maintained, clean, has amaizing views, nice pool. The staff is very friendly. The food was good, very big portions. The hotel has good value for money. We loved the beach - it was clean, you can swim during high and low tides. Perfect place if you don’t want to be in the middle of nowhere but also want quiet holidays. No noisy bars, etc. Also, it felt safe. "

Upendo Beach Boutique Hotel Zanzibar ★★★★
"My husband and I visited on the last leg of our honeymoon, following 6 nights on safari in Kenya. We were sadly not overly impressed by our stay here. We were greeted by the manager, who was very friendly and receptive, and did his best throughout our stay to ensure we were happy. We had no complaints about the hotel itself, rooms were lovely, the hotel was clean, and a lovely white beach / ocean view. However, this hotel / location is just missing something. We were on a half board catering basis, and although the food was really delicious at Upendo, it was the same small menu & cuisine every day, and we very quickly got bored of the food / had everything that we fancied over the 6 days we stayed. The restaurant has a very relaxed vibe / not a very romantic setting - it's more of a day time beach bar, which is fine for lunch, but we expected somewhere more formal for evening meals. We felt this was generally the same in all eating places along the beach, and we really struggled to find somewhere to eat each day, particularly Valentines day. There were a few issues during our stay including building work going on right outside our room (at the place next door), palm trees bashing against our room throughout the night, sewage smell coming into our bathroom, and the hygiene of the staff who came to turn down our room each day. This is not a reflection of the hotel itself, but sadly meant that our experience on holiday here was not what we had in mind. The hotel manager did do his best to rectify some of the issues and we were grateful of that. Another thing to note, is we were not aware before about the crime / culture / safety on the island - upon arrival we were advised not to walk right along the beach, but even walking left, we were harassed by children looking for money / staring at our pockets and felt very uncomfortable. We did not feel at ease to leave the hotel despite the multiple day trips on offer, which was a shame. Overall, the food offerings and variety let this down for us, and lack of formal restaurant / no atmosphere."
