"Had a great time and enjoyed some truly stunning views 😍 The staff were lovely and friendly but at times had to request or remind them about certain things, perhaps because we’re South Asians as most guests seemed to be Western. Some amenities listed such as toothpaste, toothbrush, slippers and a razor were not provided which was a little disappointing considering the price paid. Also noticed a few stains on the toilet floor and white curtains though it wasn’t a major issue. The breakfast buffet was good but wish there had been more variety. Overall had a lovely and memorable stay and really enjoyed the trip with my best friend."

Celestia by Sea Cloud

Celestia by Sea Cloud ★★★

📍 Thaple North Road, Unawatuna, Talpe

"We actually booked 'Caliza by Sea Cloud' but when we phoned to confirm we was told to come to Celestia instead. They are still listing Caliza on *********** even though it is undergoing major building work. Overall we was very disappointed with our stay here especially when the 5.45am train hurtled past right by the back fence hooter blaring due to the crossing a 100 metres away. When we queried how regular and late the trains would pass by we was told by the owner the last train is at 6pm, there is one just before 9pm. We was asked to pay before we had even been shown the room. It is not good value it is over priced for the location and breakfast not included. The room is a reasonable size, no mosquito netting. There is a kettle, no fridge. We reported that our toilet was leaking as there was a large puddle all around it we was told it was condensation. Funny, all the other places we stayed in didn't have that issue! There are lots of other nicer places to be found, l certainly would not recommend this place or Caliza. Fortunately we only booked for 2 nights."

Owl and the Pussycat Hotel & Restaurant ★★★★★
"We had the most amazing stay at Owl and the Pussycat — it’s a truly special place. What really makes this hotel is the people. The team made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived, and every time we came back it genuinely felt like coming home. A special mention to Nayani, Bashita, Risvi, and Kusal — who, by the way, makes the best Gin Basil Smash in all of Sri Lanka. The team were consistently attentive, friendly, and always happy to help — whether that was organising transport or just making sure everything was perfect. Nothing ever felt like too much trouble. The food was incredible throughout our stay — we especially loved the traditional curry, which was a real highlight. Breakfast was also fantastic every morning, with plenty of choice and great quality. The pool area is beautiful and such a relaxing place to spend time, and the overall setting of the hotel strikes a perfect balance — peaceful and tucked away, yet still close to Galle Fort, Unawatuna, Ahangama, Weligama and Mirissa. Our room was lovely and kept in perfect condition every day by housekeeping — everything felt really well looked after. We’d happily stay here again and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it. A huge thank you to the whole team — we’re already looking forward to coming back."

WB Villa ★★★
"NOT luxury but still a good standard. Room nice. Vihan the manager is incredibly helpful and kind. He makes the stay. Great to watch turtles from wall at end of garden overlooking beach. Breakfast good. Open to non guests which is annoying, as few sunbeds and people walk of the beach and use the sunbeds having had a meal. Understand it's a business but not good for guests. Restaurant Italian so didn't choose to eat there unless needed a change to remind of home. We were promised a particular room and didn't get it."

"The hotel was nicer than what is shown in pictures. The pool was great. The view of pool from room is very accessible and great to view from the room. The staff were very friendly and accommodative. The hotel although is not next to the beach is however in close proximity to the beach. A short walk away. The breakfast was also real good with milk rice and fish with gravy and a sambol. It is accompanied with watermelon and pineapple slices and a choice of tea or coffee for a very reasonable price. Definitely recommend for small group wanting a private place to unwind."

"After spending more than five weeks travelling Sri Lanka, this was easily the worst accommodation I encountered. Sri Lanka has been extraordinary — generous, warm, and genuinely welcoming — which makes this property stand out for all the wrong reasons. From early on, there was a clear sense of judgement and discomfort that made both myself and the registered guest (my associate) feel unwelcome. What disturbed me most was the treatment of my associate, who is Sri Lankan. Background conversations in the local language (not directed at us, but clearly about the situation) created the impression that assumptions were being made. The tone felt condescending and left him feeling diminished simply for being local. That kind of subtle discrimination is unacceptable. As a solo traveller, I enjoy meeting people and being social. However, business is business, and nothing about my behaviour or stay was inappropriate. Despite this, I was made to feel scrutinised and judged, even as though I were being viewed as soliciting — an absurd and offensive implication. I want to be fair: the daily manager was genuinely professional, polite, and respectful. Unfortunately, that was not reflected across the wider experience. Other issues included: Unreliable Wi-Fi with frequent outages Ice ordered at 9pm, delivered at midnight Poor-quality, tasteless food Visible termite damage Cheap, uncomfortable furniture Poorly chosen décor No bar fridge Younger staff who appeared overworked and undervalued The property has an oppressive, negative energy. It felt more like a prison than a place of rest. I was relieved to leave early. I attempted to cancel before arrival due to a bad feeling, but the request was denied. That instinct proved right. Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, and it is a shame that this place stained an otherwise remarkable journey. At least the views of the beach are goodx"

The Frangipani Tree by Edwards Collection - Thalpe ★★★★★
"We had a wonderful holiday in Sri Lanka. Beautiful country, rich history and lovely people. However, I feel I should share my experience with The Frangipani Tree, Talpe. The hotel is run down and nothing like the pictures on the internet. The Wi-Fi did not work dropping out all the time. The toilet didn’t flush properly with the toilet paper getting stuck. The bathroom and wardrobe are outside which is no good for mosquitos in the evening. Our bed was uncomfortable and small. To lock the door, it was a padlock with a small key you would use for your garden shed. There were no power points, so we unplugged the bedside lamps to plug in our phone chargers. The manager when we asked where we should eat, told us don’t eat here, go down the road to Shanti Shanti which is quite a good little bar on the beach with food. There were no pool umbrellas and limited amenities. The tennis court is on its last legs. The hotel is run down with dead grass. After 3 hours we checked of what was supposed to be a 5-night stay and moved ourselves to another hotel as staying any longer would have ruined our holiday. I wish I had of read the reviews before booking this hotel."
