"Come for the safari. Remember the people. We were a family of five – my dad, my father-in-law, my wife, my son and myself – and flew into Madikwe by prop plane after spending the previous night in Johannesburg. From the moment we landed, the experience started. We were met at the airstrip by Sebastian, who would also be our ranger throughout our stay. What was supposed to be our transfer to Impodimo very quickly became our first mini game drive! When we arrived at the lodge, we were given the usual briefing – meals, timings, game drives, etc. Then came one instruction that we didn’t quite understand: At night, you cannot walk between your room and the main lodge without being accompanied by a ranger. It didn’t take long for us to understand why. Shortly afterwards, while Sebastian was accompanying us to our room, our path was blocked by an elephant. Welcome to Madikwe! 😂 Impodimo sits along a route used by elephants travelling up and down towards the waterhole. So yes, you can quite literally have elephants wandering past the lodge. It is an incredible experience, especially for kids, but also a reminder that you are very much a guest in their home. ~ THE SAFARI ~ Sebastian was our dedicated ranger and Mpo our tracker, and having both of them with us on every game drive was fantastic. For anyone going on their first safari, there is something important to understand: This isn’t a zoo. The animals aren’t sitting around waiting for your vehicle to arrive. Nobody makes a phone call and asks the lions to come out. 😂 Madikwe is MASSIVE, and finding wildlife takes patience, experience and sometimes a fair amount of luck. So let your ranger and tracker do their jobs. Watching Sebastian and Mpo work was part of the experience itself. They read tracks, prints, broken vegetation and even dung to understand where animals had been, what direction they were moving and what they might be doing. You realise very quickly that what looks like absolutely nothing to you is giving them a whole bunch of information. And that knowledge comes from years of experience. One of the reasons we chose Madikwe was also the diversity of the landscape. As you drive through the reserve, the terrain changes significantly, which means you get to experience different animals within their natural habitats rather than simply ticking animals off a checklist. I’ll let the pictures do a better job of showing what Sebastian and Mpo managed to find for us. ~ THE LODGE ~ Impodimo itself is beautiful. The rooms are absolutely five-star, the setting is spectacular and the food was excellent – beautifully presented, delicious and easily at the standard you would expect from a luxury international hotel. But once again, the thing we will remember most wasn’t the room or even the food. It was the people. The entire team was warm, hospitable and incredibly helpful throughout our stay. And then my dad lost his camera lens. Not a lens somewhere inside the lodge. He had"

"Top notch, excellent customer service is what you will receive at Last Word. The staff is exceptional. Very kind and engaging. The attention to detail is remarkable. The rooms were spotless. Loved the snack left on your nightstand every evening. The hot water bottles, greetings with a wet towel and a drink were a treat. The water hole is bustling with activity. Finally got my photo of a giraffe drinking! The food was incredible."

"We have had numerous safari holidays but Jamala was the ultimate in luxury. The staff were excellent, our driver KG was top rate and the food was amazing. The setting for the lodge was alongside a waterhole and every day we could see elephant, white rhino, impala, zebra, wharthogs etc. in large numbers coming down to drink. The elephant particularly were fascinating, greeting each other, having disagreements and drinking, splashing in the water etc. It was magnificent."

Tau Game Lodge ★★★★★
"We recently visited as an extended family of 13, booking 6 rooms at the owner's lodge, Malta, which is the sister lodge to Tau and must be booked as a full lodge versus by individual rooms (or chalets.) The staff wow'ed me. They were the most kind and helpful people. We had our own private safari drivers, personal chef, bartender, along with housekeeping and support staff. The accomodations were beyond 5 star, total luxury! And the reason you likely are considering booking here... the safari drives... Silas and Rose took us on the most breath-taking rides and we'll be forever grateful for how wonderful they made this experience for our family. I have a nearly 4 year old and they customized rides for him, Tori also asked what he'd like to eat each day, and they all had playful banter with him throughout our stay, too. Oli made sure my wine glass was always full and they all truly made sure my heart was always happy! We visited Tau's main lodge for dinner 1 evening and for the bliss spa package 1 afternoon. The main lodge is also amazing and our spa treatment was extremely relaxing. Absolute must visit! I am already dreaming of a return!"

Last Word Madikwe ★★★★
"We have just returned from an incredible trip to Last Word Madikwe. I have been on safari in South Africa, Kenya, Zimbabwe and Botswana and was blown away by the intimate experience the lodge's onsite, underground hide affords guests. The hide is accessible to guests all day and night and with the lodge only having a max of 12 guests, we often had it all to ourselves. Every night we watched rhino drink at water level and during the day we delighted in seeing the elephants up close as they swept their trunks close to the entrance of the hide. It was truly unforgettable. The lawns of the lodge also look over one of the park's oldest waterhole, which results in a steady parade of all species coming into full view to drink -- throughout the day and night. For several hours between game drives we could relax on the lawns and watch the wildlife interact with one another without their behaviour being disturbed. Out on drive we saw a cheetah kill, at least 10 rhino, elephant, the rare brown hyena and lion. We cannot wait to go back, this time taking more family members with us!"

Madikwe Safari Lodge ★★★★★
"I can’t find the words to properly convey just how wonderful our time was here. Every single detail from the Lodge itself, to the staff, the food, the setting and of course the game drives, was immaculate. Beautiful clean, spacious and comfortable lodges, INCREDIBLE food, bubbly and friendly staff members, and of course, our Ranger: Regard, who was hilarious, informative and all round an excellent guy to spend our time with. We are so grateful. The view from our lodge was just opposite the water hole, where elephants gathered all day long and we could sit and watch with a cup of coffee or lunch. It was so special. I also visited the spa and got an Aromatherapy massage which was bliss, and once again of course all of the staff members were welcoming, helpful and so lovely to be around. I’m so sad to be leaving, and I will remember this place and our experiences here forever. Thank you so much to everybody, I feel extremely lucky to have stayed here and had this experience."

Motswiri Private Safari Lodge ★★★★★
"We had an incredible stay at Motswiri. The rooms overlook the watering hole, so when you are not out on game drives, you can still see the wildlife up close and watch their natural behaviour. The elephants and giraffes were really entertaining while we sat with a glass of wine watching. With two 3 hour game drives each day, there are lots of opportunities to see the wildlife in it’s own habitat and the guides are very knowledgeable. We really enjoyed the morning coffee stops and the sundowner gin and tonics while out on the game drives. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We requested if one of our rooms could have something special for my daughter and son in law who were just married, the effort the staff made was incredible and added to the precious memories for the couple. Not much else to say really apart from AMAZING! Would highly recommend and hope to return soon."

Tuningi Safari Lodge ★★★★★
"This is an awesome experience. The lodge itself is so comfortable, relaxed and well maintained at all times. The hide at the watering hole is an amazing creation. Our room was excellent (No. 1) although the outside generator can be heard at times. The food is excellent, the staff are wonderful and whilst it’s very hard to name individuals, it is the presence of committed managers, Heidi & Donovan who stand out and lead a happy, competent team of staff. The safari drives are always worth that early alarm call ! Ashley is a knowledgeable, kind hearted, humorous guide who enabled awesome sightings. Unfortunately the last couple of days were rainy but still with good humour off we all went to explore. A final generous touch was to be escorted to the main gate in our hire car as the rain left the gravel road a little slippery but with care it was just fine. Thank you so much all of you at Tuningi, so hoping to see you all again one day. Liz & Carole"

Jamala Madikwe ★★★★★
"Having been met by Federal Airlines staff on arrival from London, I was quickly transferred by minibus to their Private Terminal at O.R. Tambo Effortless check in, with a small lounge for drinks and food. Escorted then to the waiting Pilatus aircraft and just an hour later were landing on the dirt strip at Madikwe East. The Manager/Owner Rodney Steyn was seeing off some guests, so he personally met and welcomed everyone one of us upon arrival. Literally within minutes luggage was removed from the plane and loaded onto the Land cruiser, and we were off to the Lodge. The drive was a safari in itself, spotting elephants, giraffe and zebra and many birds on the way! Cold towels and a welcome drink greeted our arrival, and paperwork was swiftly dealt with. There are just five luxury Villas at Jamala Madikwe, so everything is very personal. The day's routine is explained, from an early morning game drive, lavish breakfast with food cooked to order, late afternoon game drive, and a stunning three course dinner. I was escorted to my Villa and shown around the inside and outside, having features explained. From the private pool, outside showers, complimentary drinks in the fridge, red & white wine, tea & coffee facilities, shower, bath tub with salts and bubbles for relaxing, a huge double bed with mosquito net (which i suspect is more for show as Madikwe is in a malarial free area). Ample power points thoroughout to to recharge devices. Air conditioning was not needed being early winter, but a hearty log fire was lit whilst at dinner. Comfy sofas to relax and read beside the fire late into the evening. Every conceivable item appeared to have been thought of, in fact I believe some guests are happy just to relax and watch game from their Villa, and only come out for dining. There is a well equipped bar where guests mingle before dinner in front of a large fire, a library and drawing room again with roaring fires. Every evening a different venue is utilised outside or inside the Lodge for dining. The cuisine is exceptional, in terms of quality and presentation. Complimentary drinks are available at all times. Tables are impeccably laid even with candlesticks. There is a small pool, sun loungers, suncreams, a gym, health spa, all overlooking a huge watering hole where game pass through constantly. A true spectacle. I could write endlessly eschewing the virtues of this establishment, but the one thing that sets Jamala Madikwe apart from other Lodges are the fantastic dedicated and loyal team of staff to wait upon your every whim. Nico the GM and Chef Jacques are at the top of their game. Lazarus was my superb ranger. There are so many other individuals that I could mention. A big thank you for making this my best Game Lodge in maybe over fifty stays throughout Africa."

Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge
"My wife and I stayed at Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge for four nights in early June, and by pure luck we happened to be the only guests at the lodge during our stay. That meant every game drive was just the two of us and our guide, Joseph. We recognize that this is not the typical experience, but it gave us a unique opportunity to get to know the staff and spend a lot of time with them. Buffalo Ridge was one of the most special travel experiences we have ever had. The lodge is beautiful, Madikwe is incredible, and the wildlife exceeded our expectations, but what made this place unforgettable was the people. Joseph led all eight of our game drives, and he was outstanding. He has been guiding for 17 years, and it showed. He patiently answered our many beginner questions, shared his knowledge of the reserve and its wildlife, and seemed to have an incredible instinct for finding animals. Before visiting, I assumed seeing animals was mostly a matter of driving around and getting lucky. Spending eight drives with Joseph showed us how much expertise is involved. Whether he was tracking animals from footprints and droppings, scanning the horizon for movement, or communicating with other guides, it was clear that many of our best sightings happened because of his skill and experience. The drives themselves were spectacular. During our stay we saw four of the Big Five: lion, rhino, elephant, and buffalo. Leopards were the only one we missed, though we learned they are notoriously difficult to find. We also saw cheetahs and African wild dogs. One of our favorite sightings was two lionesses with five cubs. We also loved seeing elephant calves and a one-month-old rhino calf. Many of our favorite photos were taken with nothing more than an iPhone. The lodge itself is peaceful and relaxing. We frequently saw wildlife from our chalet and from the main lodge overlooking the watering hole. On our final morning, a herd of elephants came through as we were preparing to leave, providing one last unforgettable memory before our departure. The chalets were comfortable, the outdoor shower was fantastic, and we had no issues with Wi-Fi or hot water. We arrived expecting to remember the animals. We left knowing that what we will remember most is the people. The hospitality at Buffalo Ridge was the best we have experienced anywhere in the world. Chefs Julia, Katlego, and Josephine prepared meal after meal that rivaled or exceeded many high-end restaurants we have visited in the United States. We especially loved the freshly made desserts and quickly became fans of koeksisters. During our stay I developed a sinus infection, and Godfrey and Priscilla from the reception team went out of their way to track down medication for me. It made a tremendous difference and helped me enjoy the remainder of our stay. Penelope, Amanda, Cassius, Grace, and Elias were equally warm, helpful, and welcoming throughout our stay. Every interaction felt genuine, and everyone seemed genuinely"
