"The assigned room was not the one I booked. Instead of East Wing with a mountain view, I got assigned to South Wing, not sure if it is a mountain view but definitely not what I expected (I will attach a photo). But generally, I still had a fantastic experience there. The location is great for me because it is near Shinhotaka Ropeway. The open air onsen was beautiful, I liked it a lot, and went every night. The food was fantastic too! I am not well versed with Japanese food culture, but basically it was the traditional course meal (only dinner) you probably will have in a decent Japanese restaurant. I am a vegetarian, the hotel is prepared for my diet every breakfast and dinner. I must say I am really amazed with their food culture and knife skill. Their front desk was helpful with my needs too like a nail cutter, plaster etc."

"The hotel has 7 rooms and a very distinctive homestay. There are also private soup and public baths. It is not convenient to eat nearby. It is more convenient to drive over. Breakfast and dinner are Japanese style. In addition, the 2,000 yen/person and the beef set meal are great value. There are about 150g and about flying cattle."

"Wow my friend and I told ourselves that this was gonna be a little treat for us when we booked, knowing how steep the price was. But it was way more enjoyable than I had expected! We had not planned how to travel back from the hotel to Nagoya, so we just asked the front desk when we arrived. And the staff was so kind to share with us the timetable and modes of transportation available. (I conversed with her in Japanese). We went late at night for the onsen, around 11pm, and basically had to whole place to ourselves! There are 2 indoor pools and 3 outdoor pools, and the outdoor pools are must-tries!! Whole body was so relaxed after soaking in the onsen, and it relieved our weariness and sore from hiking. Buffet dinner and breakfast were awesome too! My friend is vegetarian and initially she worried that she might not have much options, but her worry was uncalled for, as they had a wide variety of food, all super delicious. We also loved the view from our room and also from the lobby… perfect onsen hotel experience for us."

"I enjoyed my stay in this hotel . The room is a traditional Japanese tatami room, very spacious for 2 persons with a balcony facing the river and the mountain. Room is just as shown in the photos. The front office staff are very helpful and friendly. They do speak abit of English. Breakfast and dinner were included . Dinner was multi course Japanese meal using seasonal produce . Do advise the hotel a few days in advance if you have any food preferences as they will try to accommodate. Meals very lovely presented . I stayed here 2 nights and dinner menu was different for each night . Hotel is about 20 to 25 min walk from the bus terminal. Best to pack a hand carry bag instead of a trolley bag as certain part of the trail to the hotel is unpaved and muddy after rain . Or check with the hotel for luggage delivery service Hotel also has a 24 hrs indoor and outdoor onsen ! Spacious and well maintained."

"The room was very small, with four beds and the suitcase could not be opened. The toilet is more inconvenient for public use, but the meal is recommended for 10 points. It is very careful and delicious. There are two outdoor baths that are rare. Soaking 10 points is comfortable "

"I dont know how to express myself about this place. It’s nice place, clean, cozy and Japanese vibe as all I think about Japanese. Event I can’t understand much about Japanese, the host is super friendly helps and try to communicate by Google Translate, i highly recommend to order breakfast here as it’s like an art. The outside onsen is also supert, for my first experience. Just note that Okuhida is quite remote so not so many restaurant out there, and walking in night is bit scared. But the ryokan is making me feel bless to have a nice experience here"

"Our stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan."

"Very cosy ryokan, room was slightly dusty but quickly cleared up with the air purifier provided, the toilet was quite small for me but manageable. I liked the location and the decor, although the building seemed a little bit old compared to other ryokans in the area, it was still very well maintained."

"I highly recommend this onsen hotel! The environment, service, and food are all excellent. They have two outdoor private onsens and two indoor private onsens, all free of charge. The public outdoor onsen is also very large, and some rooms even come with their own onsen baths. After your bath, you can enjoy complimentary milk and cold drinks, and in the morning, Yakult. There's a sake happy hour in the evening, and free ramen for a late-night snack! I've stayed at over 20 onsen hotels, and this is the first time I've seen such generosity, haha. The hotel pays great attention to every detail, which is fantastic. For dinner, we chose the Hida beef kaiseki meal, which was also quite good. They offer a free shuttle service. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit!"

"I stayed with my two-year-old daughter and stayed in different Japanese-style hotels many times. This time I booked two hotels in Shinhotaka/Hirayu Onsen. This is the first one. The location and view of the hotel are very good. The decoration is very good. Food is good. The front desk supervisor sister is also very good and hard-working. I would like to praise her. He also said that there are currently not enough staff to require tolerance. But some services are not in place. The hot spring pool and floors were not cleaned properly and there was a lot of moss. I almost slipped and fell several times! It was too dangerous and felt dirty. Perhaps to save money, the heating was not turned on in the passages and the entire public space was too cold. In addition, you can actually pull your luggage into the room from outside. . I was worried about the tatami mats in the passageway I came all the way to. . There are also concerns about overall hygiene. People have to take off their shoes when entering the hotel, but wheels are not required 😂 Two waiters in the restaurant. One can also make the other girl keep a straight face the whole time. When the small basin was dirty and I asked for it to be replaced, I was told ”No” - I don't know what kind of Japanese service this is. In addition, the hotel (the day I stayed) was mostly occupied by foreign guests. . The menu is also in English in Japanese format (haha!). It is estimated that this restaurant mainly caters to Western customers, but it is not a traditional Japanese service."

GGuest UserMay 15-16, 2024 From the moment we saw photos of this special place on the internet, we knew we had to stay here! The natural rock onsen baths caught our imagination - and our stay was wonderful beyond expectations! The resort is located in a forested valley is stunning, next to a rushing river. Natural mountain hot spring water is channeled into 7 lovely outdoor onsen baths, as well as ensuite baths. The facility is beautifully designed with gardens and multi-level suites, with each of the levels looking out to the river, with plenty of seating to enjoy the relaxing and lovely views. We were treated with limitless thoughtful hospitality from the moment we arrived, to the moment we left - in fact, one of our group kept commenting ”the y[the staff] must think we're really special!”. The suite was beautifully appointed with tatami mats, traditional Japanese decor, comfortable beds, yukata and slippers are provided along with tabi socks and plenty of clean linens. Our suite had its own private onsen bath encircled by natural stones, and constantly running hot spring water. Such a contrast to water-parched California and even Hawaii where we're from! The outdoor onsens are open all night, for viewing of the starry night sky. The kaiseki dinner was exceptional, with many many delicious small plates, each exquisitely prepared and presented - a petite, freshly caught local fish was skewered as if swimming and roasted in a salt shell. Utterly delicious! In the morning, after a similarly wonderful breakfast, we experienced a mochi-pounding session with the hotel staff and guests joining in - lots of fun - photos were provided! Transportation - It was a challenge figuring out how to get to this place - finally, we had a Japanese-speaking hotel clerk call the resort, and got instructions for the 1-hour bus ride from Takayama bus station to Shinhotaka Onsen / Nakao Kou-gen-guchi. There are buses running every hour! We walked to the resort from the bus stop when we arrived, and a shuttle van to the bus stop was thoughtfully provided by the resort when we left. PS) I was unable to upload photos. Please provide an email, because you won't want to miss seeing this beautiful place!

GGuest UserHotel and Spa Gift Takayama, nestled near Takayama Old Town, perfectly blends traditional Japanese style with modern amenities. The onsen (hot spring) water is incredibly smooth, and the open-air bath offers stunning mountain views, washing away any travel fatigue. Rooms are spacious and spotless, and the dinner kaiseki features local ingredients like Hida beef. The service is meticulous and thoughtful. It offers exceptional value for money and is an ideal choice for experiencing Takayama's culture.

SShiori SCThe hotel is very close to JR Takayama Station. After exiting the station, you don't need to cross the road; just turn right towards Tokyu Stay, and you'll find it after passing Ajikura Tengoku. The hotel's decor is very unique. We booked a corner triple room, so the space was incredibly spacious and comfortable. Besides drip coffee and tea bags, the room also provided bottled mineral water. There's an open-air bath on the 9th floor – simply flawless. Before my trip, I read many reviews recommending Hida beef, but to my dismay, I discovered Ajikura Tengoku was closed when I arrived (ugh!). Luckily, I quickly found Maruaki, a famous Hida beef restaurant open year-round. The beef was incredibly rich and fatty – you'll definitely fall in love with Hida beef! I'm already planning to come back next year! 😋

FFuhuojiedaoThis hotel is right next to Takayama JR Station. You can spot the 'hotel around' sign on the building as your train pulls in, though the name 'Ascend Hotel Collection' used on Ctrip might cause a little confusion. It's super convenient for getting to Shirakawa-go, as the Nohi Bus Terminal is right next door. The rooms are a bit small but very comfortable and have a modern, youthful design. I loved the thoughtful details, like the local restaurant and attraction cards in the lobby, the wall art in the elevator area, the bedside outlets, and the window-side sofa seating. For breakfast, there are four delicious options: Japanese, Western, and two vegetarian choices. I highly recommend the Japanese-style breakfast. There are also several great Hida beef BBQ restaurants not far from the hotel, perfect for dinner.

GGuest UserThe hotel's location is excellent, right outside Takayama Station, and the Nohi Bus terminal is also nearby. Dining options around are very convenient. We wanted to try Ajikura next door, but it was closed that day. After hiking in Kamikochi on a rainy day, soaking our feet and enjoying the hot springs was incredibly relaxing. I feel like if I ever come back to Takayama, I'd choose to stay here again.

LLouisa Siaw WeiSuper conveniently located just next to Takayama Station and right beside the Nohi Bus Terminal, making it an excellent base for getting around especially by public transport to Shirakawa go or Toyama or Nagoya. Unlike many hotels in Japan with compact room sizes, this hotel offers a more spacious setup, complete with a kitchen, cooking utensils, and even a washer-dryer — perfect for longer stays or added comfort. It is also within easy walking distance to Miyagawa Morning Market and Takayama Old Town, with plenty of Hida beef restaurants nearby for a great local dining experience.

GGuest UserStay was worth every penny. Hotel was located very close to train station and bus station so travelling to and out from it was convenient. Check in process was fast and easy to understand. They even had tea ready during checkin Room was decently sized and very clean. I arrived during spring and the beds were so comfortable and warm The highlight of the hotel has got to be the onsen. They have both private onsen that you can book for an hour and common onsen. If you go around midnight (the onsens are open till 1am), its completely empty and you can enjoy it all for yourself. Word of warning though, you can probably be seen if you're standing close to the edge of the public open air onsen so maybe dont do that (or do whatever floats your boat). After the onsen you can help yourself to free drinks and snacks They had beautiful sakura blossoms during that time, and a public foot bath that can be enjoyed by all. I loved my stay here and will definitely return if I have a chance.

The drinks sold at the mini-mart are good, and there are tables to sit at, a microwave, miso soup, and ice available. Overall, it's very good and close to the public onsen.

Rrichie03I stayed for 5 nights, and first of all, the price is very reasonable for a backpacker hostel. Check-in is done online: you choose your language, scan your passport, and have a f2f call with the staff via an iPad. FYI, there is a mandatory accommodation tax in Japan of 100 yen per night. You can also request a paid ”Irori” service at a nearby sister branch, where you can grill your own ingredients over a traditional Japanese sunken hearth. Just a reminder: you can get fresh ingredients from the nearby market ”Family Store Satoh” or further away at ”Surugaya Asumo.” The common area isn't huge, and the kitchen is basic but functional with tableware, an electric kettle, ovens, a microwave, and a mini fridge. The tap water is drinkable; the mixer tap can be toggled to adjust the temperature, so you won't get a chill from the ice cold water in winter! 😂 In the back, there are a toilet, three shower stalls, and communal sinks, along with a washing machine and dryer that are free to use (you just need to buy detergent from the capsule machine or bring your own) Since it's a hostel, the dorms have top and bottom bunks. The bunks are quite spacious and come with two power outlets (remember your travel adapter!), an overhead locker (bring your own padlock), a towel, and two hooks. You have to make your own bed; it's a futon-style setup where you lay the linens on the mattress. A pillow and duvet are provided. During winter, they run the AC (split system) on heat mode to keep it cozy. In the room, there’s a luggage storage area and hanging rods for clothes. On the second floor where I stayed, there are two toilets in the room: one with a urinal and another unisex one with a smart bidet/washlet. To be honest, while it's very close to the Miyagawa Morning Market, it feels a bit far from the Nohi Bus Center and JR Station. If you don't like walking or tire easily, this might be a bit of a challenge. Overall, it's a great, affordable choice for backpackers😗
