AAganzhongjiezheThis guesthouse is incredibly charming and artistic, it feels like being in Sanya or Chengdu! It has a terrace, a small courtyard, three floors above ground and one basement floor. The rooms are spotless, and the bathrooms are very modern, with heated toilets, sensor lights, automatic curtains, and more. Considering all these amenities, the price is an absolute steal! There's even an elevator inside. The owner is lovely and even personally cooks breakfast, making the whole experience feel very homely and warm. If I hadn't been in such a rush, I would have loved to stay a few more days. The location is perfect, you can see the ancient city right from the entrance. Five-star recommendation!

KKatrin SauthoffMy husband and I are a couple from Germany. We booked two nights there, and our decision was absolutely the right one. From the initial contact (via the WeChat app, which is essential for your entire trip to China) to our departure, everything was perfect. We were picked up from the train station by car and taken to the hotel free of charge. This is especially good for Western tourists who don't speak Chinese. The first problem would have been explaining to the taxi where we wanted to go. The lobby and rooms are very beautiful, stylish, and equipped with the highest technology. Most of the guest rooms face the inner courtyard, so you can sleep very quietly and comfortably. The beds are very large and comfortable. The hotel's location is excellent. It's located on the northern edge of the Ancient City of Datong, just a few minutes' walk from the tourist attractions and the colorful and lively old town. So you can enjoy it without being disturbed by noise. I would especially like to emphasize the friendliness of the staff. Unfortunately, we don't speak Chinese, and the staff didn't speak English, but with the help of modern communication tools (language apps), we understood each other perfectly. Every request was fulfilled. There's even the option to use a washing machine in the basement of the hotel. This is especially fantastic for tourists on longer trips to China, as it allows for easy laundry. If you ever come back to China, we will definitely book this hotel again.

GGuest UserI've wanted to stay here for a long time, and this family trip finally made that dream come true. The check-in experience was excellent, and the facilities showed incredible attention to detail. The complimentary toiletries pack even included electric toothbrushes and Gillette razors, and all the snacks provided were from Sam's Club. Breakfast was exceptional – an à la carte style where they'd prepare whatever you ordered. Everything tasted fantastic, and there were plenty of choices. Enjoying delicious pastries in the courtyard under the sun was a truly wonderful experience! In the evening, friends came over, and we sat on the courtyard sofa, chatted, drank tea, and watched the clouds in the night sky. We even caught a drone show from Dai Wang Mansion, which was truly delightful! We also toured the owner's private museum and wine cellar. It certainly lives up to its reputation as a courtyard built with 200 million yuan; the main gate in the middle is 200 years old. Every detail exudes taste and grandeur! The service was excellent too. Although there weren't many staff members, they were very responsive. When my shoes got wet in the heavy rain, they even brought a hairdryer to dry them for me – I was truly grateful! In short, the value for money at this price is unbeatable! Five-star recommendation! 👍👍👍👍👍 Overall, a fantastic stay, but I do have a few suggestions to offer: 1. Only the door could be opened for ventilation in the room; the windows didn't open. It would be great if there was a way to allow for cross-ventilation. 2. The hotel doesn't provide parking vouchers. While overnight parking was only 20 yuan, offering vouchers would enhance the guest experience. 3. Perhaps due to concerns about some guests occupying a room with too many people, I was repeatedly asked during check-in how many individuals were staying in our room, which I found a bit off-putting.

MMonaijiangThis is a very new guesthouse. Let me start with the pros: 1. Located inside the ancient city's pedestrian street, there are many places to explore and eat within walking distance. A few minutes' walk will take you to the roadside to find shared bikes or electric scooters to explore the ancient city. There are also cafes, restaurants, creative shops, vinegar shops, and bars nearby. 2. The bottled water, shampoo, and shower gel in the room are all from good brands. 3. There's a service group chat, and they respond promptly to any issues. 4. There are access control points for the inner and outer areas, ensuring privacy for guests. 5. It's very quiet at night. The view from the window is of the ancient city's undulating rooftops and courtyards. 6. The overall design is thoughtful. Cons: 1. Cars don't go directly to the hotel; you have to walk a bit. If you have luggage, the butler needs to pick you up from the parking area, but getting in and out requires walking a considerable distance, and it's quite sunny. When we were about to leave, the staff only helped me with my luggage and took it to the car after we requested it. Given the distance, they should have proactively offered to greet and see us off, instead of just pushing our luggage around for us to carry. 1. Regarding the pick-up area, the butler could have introduced the old town or the newly built area. Frankly, this route was very sunny and took a long time to walk, making my experience very poor. 2. The bathroom fixtures and fixtures in the room were all off-brand. The shower pressure was good, but if you turned on the hand shower, the water sprayed directly onto the clothes rack opposite, instantly soaking my clothes. A design flaw. I came to Datong to see various ancient buildings, temples, grottoes, and museums, walking tens of thousands of steps a day. I wanted to take a bath in the evening, but the bathtub faucet was just for show; the water flow was extremely weak. I waited a long time, and the water still hadn't reached my ankles, and it got cold. The designer only focused on aesthetics, neglecting the practical experience for guests. Why do hotels use high-end bathroom fixtures? Quality is crucial. They might look cheap and nice in the short term, but replacements, repairs, and customer complaints will lead to higher costs later. My sincere advice is to choose high-end bathroom fixtures if you need replacements later. Also, the bathtub didn't have a hand shower, which makes cleaning difficult. The weak water flow from the fixed faucet also prevented rinsing the entire bathtub. 1. In the shower, the water quickly reached above my ankles. After disassembling the marble drain and the waterproofing layer, I found a rubber pipe inside that wouldn't open or drain. 2. The mirror above the sink has a overhead light, making it impossible for women to apply makeup… The vanity light should be positioned away from the person's head. Alternatively, a small mirror could be added. 3. The refrigerator is a cheap, no-name brand. The refrigerator cabinet doesn't seem to have proper ventilation; it gets very hot when opened, and drinks placed underneath are practically room temperature, even warm. However, there's a lot of frost on the back wall. The equipment will break down quickly, causing even greater losses in operating costs. 4. The room and work area are filled with artificial flowers and potted plants, adding formaldehyde and odors to the newly renovated room. I suggest not putting any green plants in the room as they attract insects, and artificial ones are even more unnecessary… 5. The curtain cord is too short, making it very inconvenient to pull up. This is likely a supplier error. 6. The breakfast is unremarkable. Even the plate of stir-fried noodles was just cooked and served. For guesthouse catering, I suggest learning from brands like An Yu and Xi Xia. It's not that difficult, but they could strengthen the local flavor. Chinese homestays have undergone several reshuffles, and now it's not just about aesthetics; the overall experience is crucial. Rooms need better ventilation; after one night, my eyes were very dry and my throat was sore. If you want to learn from Xie Ke's approach to homestays, you should also learn from details like bathroom fixtures and avoiding excessive use of artificial flowers. Providing guests with a small map introducing nearby attractions would also enhance their experience.

RRuby8383I came to this hotel after hearing great things about it, and it definitely lives up to the hype. It's a peaceful oasis in a bustling area, beautifully designed, and perfect for photos. The facilities are top-notch, with a sophisticated wabi-sabi aesthetic. The rooms are spacious with a well-thought-out layout. The only thing that needs improvement is the service consistency. On the day we arrived, we were quite disappointed with both the lobby and restaurant staff. The waiter at dinner couldn't recommend local dishes and we had to call them over for water refills. Also, during the evening guzheng performance in the lobby, guests weren't offered any tea – it felt quite unprofessional. However, after providing feedback to the hotel the next day, we saw a significant improvement, as if a completely different management team had taken over. A special thank you to Manager Lin and Wang Juli from the restaurant. Manager Lin was attentive to customer suggestions and promptly adjusted the management, adding a human touch to the excellent hardware. Wang Juli from the restaurant was warm, enthusiastic, and highly efficient, which elevated our experience considerably! I hope the hotel continues to strengthen its service management with such 'warmth' to truly justify its pricing.

GGuest UserI was greeted with a fruit platter during check-in, which was a wonderful welcome gesture considering I left my home about 24 hours earlier, traveling non-stop from California to Datong, China. The Inn provides a wonderful experience for the first-time foreign visitor. The interior decor has that Chinese charm consisting of artwork, a book display, an aquarium with an auspicious collection of 8 large fishes (carp, I think), in-room tea set with an on-table electric stove, which would be unique to most Westerners. The glass flooring adds an extraordinary appeal since I have never experienced that in a hotel before, and I have traveled to dozens of countries. The Inn is well located, a short bus ride to Datong Railway Station (for non-high-speed rail travel)*, and a short taxi ride to Datong South Railway Station (for high-speed rail travel)**. It is just next to Datong City Wall. You can walk along the top of the City Wall at no cost. A 10-20 minute walk takes you to nearly all the attractions within the ancient City Wall. Here you will also find a variety of restaurants serving local food as well as souvenir shops. There is also a small shop that sells sundry items including drinks (beer included) within a 5-minute walk from the Inn. Across from this sundry shop, is a shop that specializes in ancient Chinese clothing (Hanfu dress). They can dress you up, cosmetics included. The Inn provides directions to Yujian Yun Gang - a popular destination for travelers to Datong. Here you will see ancient Buddhist cave art, including large and tall (several stories tall) sculptures. It takes two bus rides to get there, 1RMB per ride. My booking choice was for either a guest room on the 1st or 2nd floor but was assigned a wonderful 2nd-floor guest room. The owners of the Inn were exceptionally friendly. I met both the mother and her daughter. My room was professionally cleaned and provided with drinking bottled water daily. If I return to Datong in the future, I will certainly book a room at this Inn. *I took a train from this station to travel south to Xinzhou after checking out. **I arrived in Datong from Beijing Daxing International Airport

Very Good
JJohnnieYI travel frequently, and lately, the heat has been unbearable, so I headed to Datong to escape the heat. To enjoy the night view, I chose to stay inside the city walls. I've often heard of Northern Wei Dynasty Datong, and when I saw this B&B with a Northern Wei courtyard, I decided to give it a try. Let me share my experience: the amenities are truly top-tier B&Bs: the private courtyard is incredibly inviting, and the rooms with courtyards are a true treasure! Datong's summer nights are incredibly cool, and it's so relaxing to sit in the courtyard, enjoying the breeze while sipping tea or a beer. The public areas also feature a free movie theater and a stylish bar—no gimmicks! After a day of exploring, curling up on the sofa to watch a private movie or enjoying a tipsy chat about travel experiences in the bar are both excellent choices. The service touches the heart: The warmth of home is irreplaceable: From the moment you enter, the smiles and proactive attitude of the front desk staff and every other employee are undeniable. It's not a formulaic ”welcome,” but rather the natural, caring presence of an old neighbor, soothing the fatigue of travel. This genuine warmth is a core competitive advantage that chain hotels can never replicate. The heartfelt breakfast demonstrates sincerity: The buffet breakfast is no slouch, boasting a rich variety and a focus on local specialties. A satisfying meal is the perfect start to a restorative day. In summary: This hotel transcends the boundaries of a ”B&B” and feels more like a ”living old house.” The amenities satisfy your every expectation of quality and cultural ambiance, while the meticulous service and hospitality make you feel instantly at home. In Datong, if you're looking for a perfect blend of the soul of an ancient city and modern comforts, this is the place to be! A certified veteran! The ambiance and facilities are both excellent, and the owner has clearly put a lot of thought into it. I hope his business continues to flourish, and I hope you'll never be unable to find a room again!

TTaniaThe hotel has very spacious and comfortable rooms. The breakfast is only Chinese, but rich and plentiful. We can't comment on the location because we always took taxis to the attractions around Datong (the wooden pagoda, hanging monasteries, and the Yungang Grottoes), but right next to the hotel are plenty of restaurants and places to grab a quick bite. The staff seemed helpful, but no one spoke English, so we had to use a translation app, which wasn't always accurate, and communication was somewhat hampered.

Wwill_s384Nice hotel but had issues with air conditioning and service. We booked the windowless room - as we assumed there would be aircon to cool it down - however we arrived and it was incredibly stuffy - and the aircon only made it warmer. We asked at the front desk and they said they’d send someone up to have a look - however all they did was give us some water bottles and the wifi password - which didn’t really help with the aircon! - i think this was an issue with the language barrier moreso than anything else. The room was 30°C (despite it only being about 12°C outside) so it was difficult to sleep or relax. Aside from that it was a nice hotel with a cool exterior and comfy beds. Breakfast cost ~£2 however the buffet selection wasn’t very big and there was no coffee - but the food tasted good. Good location, but if we were to stay here again we would certainly book a room with a window.
