"The Laocheng'en Courtyard Homestay is located within Datong Ancient City and is accessible by car. Parking is easy to find within the alleyways, especially during the off-season. The homestay features a cozy courtyard and living room, and the rooms are tidy. We booked a twin room, which wasn't huge, but the bathroom was very spacious. The main draw for us was the excellent wet/dry separation in the bathroom. There's no elevator, though. The breakfast was well-prepared and satisfying. The staff were all very friendly; on our first day, they even provided tricycles for a spin around the ancient city! Overall, it was a great stay."

"If I were to rate the room alone, this guesthouse exceeded my expectations. Even though I booked a special offer room in the basement, there were absolutely no issues with ventilation or natural light. On the contrary, on a warm winter day, bathed in the soft glow of the lights, it felt like my own cozy little haven. If I visit again, I'd still choose this place. (The lady at the front desk was beautiful and kind-hearted, always willing to help and answered every question with a smile, which truly warmed my heart.) Now for the downsides: breakfast was served about a 10-minute walk from the guesthouse, which isn't a huge deal. However, the breakfast service was a world apart from the guesthouse's excellent service. The staff didn't even lift their heads when we entered or left, completely engrossed in their TV show. And they didn't provide Wi-Fi, which I consider a very basic service, right? Also, could you please avoid serving rotten fruit to guests? The breakfast quality was more about presentation than substance; it looked good for photos, but the taste left much to be desired."

This guesthouse is perfectly situated in the heart of the ancient city. From the moment I stepped into the guesthouse, I felt like I had stepped back into ancient times. The guesthouse retains the authentic, rustic charm of the courtyard, with its blue bricks, gray tiles, and carved doors and windows, exuding a sense of history. But don't let that fool you; it's fully equipped with modern amenities. The smart climate control system ensures a comfortable room temperature, and the security features provide peace of mind. Relaxing in the courtyard, I found it incredibly relaxing to sit on a stone bench under a tree, brew a cup of tea, and feel the gentle breeze. The room was warm and elegant, and the bedding was soft and comfortable, ensuring a restful night's sleep. The bathroom was spotless, and the toiletries were high-quality. The service at the guesthouse was impeccable. The staff were warm and attentive, from patiently answering questions at check-in to helping with luggage—every detail was thoughtful and attentive. They also thoughtfully recommended nearby restaurants and sightseeing spots, such as the traditional hot pot on Gulou East Street and the steamed buns at Fenglin Pavilion, both of which were particularly authentic. Furthermore, the B&B is within walking distance of attractions like Huayan Temple, the Fuwen Temple, and the Drum Tower, making it very convenient for exploring. The breakfast was also a pleasant surprise, with a wide variety, including local specialty knife-cut noodles, millet porridge, and a variety of exquisite dim sum. Staying here allows you to enjoy the tranquility and charm of the ancient city while conveniently experiencing the local cuisine and culture. I'll definitely choose this place again when I visit Datong next time!"

"Beautiful new hotel. Very friendly staff who offered two gifts to every room during the national holiday. Room felt spacious and luxurious and was sunny and mostly quiet during a very busy holiday period. Hotel restaurant was also delicious with good service. We ate there twice. We also had breakfast everyday of our stay. Very nice quality including lots of local ingredients and choices was fantastic! The hotel is so conveniently located in the ancient city. Walking distance to a really nice cafe with great coffee, lots of restaurants and all the main attractions including pop up laneway markets selling ancient treasures. Honestly, it’s a fantastic hotel and felt worth the price. "A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City."

"The hotel lobby was absolutely beautiful, and the rooms were very comfortable. The service was exceptionally warm and friendly; they even gave us a small gift when we checked out. "The room was spacious, clean, and bright. Although the en-suite bathroom was a bit compact, its layout was very practical and well-designed. We really liked the integrated smart controls throughout the room, and the hotel staff were wonderfully warm and attentive. The L'Occitane toiletries were a nice touch. However, the hotel's biggest disappointment was the breakfast served in the basement. It was simply chaotic! The food and drink stations were disorganized, and the seating area was a complete mess, with tables and chairs crammed everywhere, even spilling into the aisles – clearly an attempt to seat more guests. The staff themselves seemed overwhelmed and disorganized, constantly rushing around to clear tables while guests stood waiting with their plates of food. This was during an off-peak travel period; I can only imagine the sheer chaos and shoulder-to-shoulder crowds during peak season. Fortunately, there's a Fenglin Pavilion downstairs serving dim sum, where for around 20-something RMB, one could enjoy a satisfying meal in a much more pleasant setting."
