The B&B's location is pretty good and convenient, with a convenience store right outside. The interior is beautiful and thoughtfully detailed. The front desk service was just okay, nothing special. The room itself was clean and tidy, but when we turned on the heater, there was a strong, persistent kerosene smell that was really unpleasant.

Pros: The price is quite reasonable, over 700 for a night with three beds. You can grab toothbrushes and toothpaste from a small table next to the front desk. There's a convenience store right next to the hotel, which is handy for buying things. Although the breakfast area is small, the breakfast itself is actually pretty good, and the restaurant staff are quite friendly. They also write little tips on a blackboard in the lobby.
Cons: The room hygiene needs improvement; only a superficial cleaning was done. When we pushed the two beds together, there were quite a lot of crumbs underneath.
Another issue was the front desk service. We booked four rooms with friends. We chose the 7 PM slot for dinner first, but then when the other three rooms tried to book the 7 PM slot, they were told it was full. However, when we had breakfast the next day, the restaurant was only about 40% occupied.

This guesthouse seems to be run by Chinese owners, which is nice. My room was right by the entrance. After checking in at the front desk, I couldn't find it until I turned around... it felt a bit like sleeping in a guardhouse. The soundproofing isn't great either. Because of its peculiar location, it gets very noisy in the mornings. And the room next door seems to be a staff office, which also generates a lot of noise. However, the room was warm and clean, perfect for a night's sleep, and the price was excellent. The only downside is that it didn't have a private bathroom. The common areas were clean and there was even coffee available, which was a pleasant touch.

About a 10-minute walk from JR Otaru Station. If you're heading to Mount Tengu, there's a bus stop (pictured in image 2) just outside the hotel exit, on the way to Otaru Station, where you can catch a bus – it's very convenient. The view from the window is quite nice (pictured in image 1). It's also very easy to walk to the Otaru Canal and the seaside. Breakfast is 2600 yen per day, and it's quite a spread.
Just a 1-minute walk to the Otaru Canal! Excellent access to tourist spots. The top floor features an open-air bath and sauna with a view of Ishikari Bay. Rooftop bar inspired by the Otaru lighthouse. Enjoy the bounty of Hokkaido at breakfast in a spacious restaurant facing the courtyard.

The hotel is quite new and the rooms are a decent size. The facilities are standard and have everything you need, with no obvious issues. The location is great, right by the canal and shopping street, though a bit far from the station. There's a fantastic curry restaurant nearby, probably the best in Otaru. However, my room had intermittent noise while I was trying to sleep, which made it hard to fall asleep. That's a big minus.

I booked two nights, the price is less than 200 per night, and the Otaru Hotel during the Snow Festival is more than 800+, so I chose a warm youth hostel.
The person in charge is an old lady. You will find her humor and enthusiasm when you communicate with her. If there is no one at the front desk, you can ring the bell. You need to leave the key at the front desk when you check out.
The second floor can be connected to the bathhouse on the first floor (I didn’t go because it seems to be an independent business bathhouse, and my roommate likes to go there);
If you are assigned to a double room as shown in the picture, you are lucky because you will live very comfortably. My roommate is of the same country and the same sex, and we chatted like friends;
If you are assigned to a quadruple room, then you will experience a rich youth hostel life. The roommates are men and women from all over the world. It is easy to communicate in a narrow environment. Everyone is very quiet and you don’t have to worry about your sleep problem.
But there is indeed a smell that is not like 🦶 air for two days. I can’t tell the difference. There is a burning thing in the room (it seems to be an air purifier) that can solve this smell.
The interesting thing about this youth hostel is that it is like a blind box. You don’t know what you will encounter.

Conveniently located within a 10-minute walk to Otaru Station and the canal. There's also a direct bus to Mount Tengu right outside the hotel. The hotel has a bit of a vintage feel, and the rooms are quite old-fashioned in style. The window view from the top floor restaurant is truly beautiful. The 11th floor offers a Western-style breakfast, while the 3rd floor has Japanese set meals, so you can choose what you prefer. There's also a large public bath on the 3rd floor for soaking.

Room: The room was spacious with a vintage decor. The twin beds in the double room were also quite large and very clean. We had a great view of the canal from the window.
Location: It's about an 800-meter walk from JR Otaru Station, or a taxi ride costs around 800 yen. I'd recommend taking a taxi when it's snowing. The seaside is just 400 meters away.
Facilities: You can pick up various samples on the first floor of the lobby.
Breakfast: The breakfast was incredibly rich and delicious! The sashimi was super fresh, the fried dishes were excellent, and they even had Hokkaido milk.

It's a bit far from Otaru Station, about a 7-10 minute walk. It's good value for money. Check-in was entirely self-service, and I didn't see a single staff member (I saw one shoveling snow in the morning, but I don't know if that counts). I don't know about the other rooms, but my room had two problems: the water heater was intermittently hot, and the bed by the window was very cold because the cold air from outside would seep in, so I had to use a lot of clothes to block it.
Just a 2-minute walk from JR Otaru Station! Direct access from New Chitose Airport without transferring trains!
Enjoy fresh seafood dining and shopping at the Sankaku Market, and with the station nearby, access to popular tourist spots is excellent.
Each room features a guest-exclusive bathroom, toilet, and wash area, ensuring comfort for long stays, small group travel, and business use.
The common area includes a PC counter and kitchen, equipped with various cooking utensils so you can prepare meals during your stay.
Additionally, washing machines and dryers in the 1st floor laundry room are available for free use.
・International travelers (guests without Japanese nationality) must submit passport information for all guests by check-in. This is required by law; refusal to submit information will result in denial of accommodation.

First off, the room is cozy, though on the smaller side. The bathroom is well-separated, and the price is affordable. Since it's a self-check-in system, make sure to input all your visitor information before arriving!

Amazing
GGuest UserThis was the best hotel of our trip. From check-in to check-out, we felt the warmth and saw the smiles of the staff throughout. The included dinner was delicious and exquisite. The set breakfast was also pretty good. The hotel offers a variety of entertainment activities and facilities, so you won't get bored at all, and the environment is beautiful. The only downside is that the soundproofing isn't great; you can hear doors opening and closing from upstairs and next door.
GGuest UserWe booked the best room on the top floor and spent 7 nights at this high end and extremely expensive ryokan/hotel. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS: The food is amazing in terms of presentation, gastronomy and service. The place is immaculately clean. The views a fantastic! We got comfortable Yukatas and overall the place has a very nice traditional vibe.
CONS: They seem to be completely inapt in hosting people who don’t speak Japanese. No one speaks English at this place. None at all! They write that we can “press 9 and call the reception”, but once you do it – you can’t have any conversation with anyone at all. Even when you get down in person to the reception, no one can really communicate with you, even with Google Translate.
They exhibit zero flexibility. The approach is – it’s our way or the highway. All is extremely polite, but no left, no right! Can we have a laundry service arranged? The answer is “no!”. Can we communicate with you via WhatsApp or email? – No! Can we come later to breakfast? No. Can we have dinner at a later time, since we can’t come earlier just this one day? No! Basically, if you want to sleep a bit later during your vacation – forget it! Either show up at 8 or 8:30 am for breakfast, or go hungry! Can we buy your Yukata? – No! Also, we were asked to indicate every day what time we intend to go out – something that adds pressure, as on vacation one may want to improvise, rather than plan ahead their outings.
Given that this place charges exuberant prices, the lack of the most basic hospitality features (communication, laundry, customer-focused flexibility) is astounding! We now staying at another Ryokan, 90 minutes away and see that everyone can speak some English and the place is much more focused on the needs of a foreign traveler, as opposed on preserving the holy rigidity of an existent system.
GGuest UserThe hotel's location is superb, within walking distance to Otaru Canal and Sankaku Market. The hotel design is elegant and refined, with a vintage touch. The 5-person loft room feels spacious. The bathroom has a separate wet and dry area. The restaurant windows are adorned with charming Otaru glass elements. I really enjoyed the hotel's happy hour wine tasting, and I loved spending a relaxing time in the beautiful bar.
GGuest UserSmooth check in
Lobby smells like smoke due to smoking room in the enclosed lobby
Easy access to tourist spot Otaru canal beside the hotel
Clean rooms just the right size for 2 pax
Ammenities like UCC drip coffee and facial products and toiletries available in lobby.
GGuest UserDo NOT choose this hotel for skiing!! Unless it's half the price during the same period, I'll never pick this place again. Prioritize other hotels with shuttle buses to Otaru Station.
First, the location: This is Otaru-Chikko Station, two stops away from Otaru Station. The nearest convenience store is a 10-minute walk outside. Although there's a mall downstairs, its operating hours are 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM, which is the only time you can use the indoor passage. Most restaurants close around 7 PM, so it's really inconvenient to find food after skiing.
Second, it's really old! The carpet in my room type was dirty, the bed was rock hard, and the pillow felt like a worn-out cotton pillow – small and flat. The worst part is that after sleeping, my head developed small bumps and became very itchy!! I don't know if it was fleas, but it made me scratch my head for the next few days. The hygiene is truly concerning.
This hotel has no coin-operated washing machines or laundry rooms, only individual dry cleaning, which is very expensive. This is super inconvenient for skiers staying for an extended period.
frankly, the only good thing about this hotel is the room size; everything else is a huge letdown.
AAnonymous UserIt was a cute boutique hotel with nice bonus facilities! Room is nicely designed and functional, with warm colors feel homey and comfy. Too bad we didn’t get the bath tub room as they were fully booked. Views from the window is mountaneous area, very nice! Bed and pillows are comfortable. Surface area for stuff are generous and practical, even enough space for sofa. Too bad they don’t give free coffee or at least instant coffee, only tea. No onsen. Music box night was awesome! Feels like a romantic dinner setting, but the smell of lamp oil was too much, gave me headache so I couldn’t stay for long, even though I would love to support the hotels and all of the polite and friendly staff by dining there. Staff are wonderful, smiles and polite and professional! During this trip we felt like Japanese staff in general are becoming a bit cold toward tourists but this hotel’s staff are not like that! We appreciate you guys. Thank you!
SSheila WZJThis hotel was amazing. Super clean and cozy. The room was so big and spacious. Can sleep up to 5 people. Just that the hotel has no elevator, only 2 floors. But still never disappoints me. Highly recommended!!!!!
GGuest UserThis apartment offers a practical and comfortable stay, especially for those looking to explore Otaru on foot. We appreciated the basic utensils and cutlery provided, making it easy to prepare simple meals. The thoughtful inclusion of toothbrushes and toothpaste was a nice touch, and the microwave was handy for quick reheats.
Comfort is well-addressed with one air-conditioner and a heater, ensuring a pleasant temperature regardless of the weather. The washing machine was a huge convenience, and we had options for drying clothes either on the hanger stand inside the room or on the balcony.
The location is a major highlight, being within easy walking distance to both Otaru Canal and Sakaimachi Street. We also found it convenient to have a Lawson and various eateries nearby, though it's a good idea to check their opening hours as they can vary.
Important Considerations for Your Stay
While the location is excellent, it's important to note that the road leading to the building is steep. This could be particularly challenging if you're driving, and we would not advise driving during winter due to the road conditions.
For those with a car, there are two parking areas available. The closer one has three slots, while a slightly further option offers approximately 12 slots. Keep this in mind, especially if you prioritize a closer parking spot.
GGuest UserExcellent value for money, and the room was very spacious, with ample room for luggage. The separate sink, toilet, and shower/bath setup was incredibly convenient to use. Everything was spotlessly clean, and the service was thoughtful and attentive. We could communicate any questions via WeChat, and their replies were always prompt and effective. The location is perfect, situated between Otaru Station and the main attractions. It's a convenient six-minute walk to Otaru Station, and walking six minutes in the opposite direction takes you directly to the Otaru Canal and Art Village, making it ideal for sightseeing.
