I recently stayed at Ueno Station Hostel Oriental I in Tokyo, and overall it was a very satisfying experience, especially for a solo traveler looking for convenience and value. The biggest advantage of this hostel is definitely its location. It is only about a 3–5 minute walk from Ueno Station, which makes it extremely convenient for getting around Tokyo. With access to JR lines, the Tokyo Metro, and the Keisei Line to Narita Airport, transportation was simple and stress-free. The surrounding area is lively, with plenty of restaurants, convenience stores, and the popular Ameyoko shopping street nearby.

The hostel itself is a capsule-style accommodation for men only. The capsule was compact, as expected in Japan, but clean and well-maintained. Each bed came with its own light, power outlet, and curtain for privacy. While you can occasionally hear other guests moving around, it was generally quiet enough to rest comfortably after a long day of exploring the city. I would recommend bringing earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

One of the highlights of staying here is the public bath. After walking around Tokyo all day, soaking in the hot bath was incredibly relaxing. The bathing area and restrooms were clean and well organized, and basic amenities were provided. There is also a lounge area, lockers for luggage, vending machines, and coin-operated laundry facilities, which make the stay more convenient.

For the price and location, Ueno Station Hostel Oriental I offers excellent value. It may not be luxurious, but it is practical, clean, and perfectly suited for budget-conscious travelers who prioritize accessibility and comfort. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Tokyo.

Easy 6-7min walk to Keisei-Ueno (Skyliner) station and Ueno station. Main and Annex blocks. Single room SUPER SMALL. Unable to fully open clam-shell suitcase on the floor. Have to place it on “foldable” table. 
HUGE Pillar about 70cmx70cm occupies 1 corner of the room. Widest path between bed and wall about 80 cm.

I was in the city for a business trip and this hotel immediately caught my eye among many others. I initially just wanted a place to crash, but unexpectedly, I found three days of pure relaxation here 🌿.

As soon as I wheeled my luggage to the front desk to check in, a lovely lady greeted me with a warm smile, offering an ice towel and lemon tea. Coming straight from the stuffy subway station, I was instantly touched by her thoughtfulness. The check-in process was incredibly fast; before I could even finish half my tea, the room key was already in my pocket. I casually mentioned wanting a quiet room, and they quietly noted it down, assigning me a high-floor room facing a residential area. This kind of attentiveness smoothed over my travel fatigue even faster than the air conditioning 👍.

Opening the room door, I was truly impressed! The room didn't have the flashy, over-the-top decorations of many trendy hotels. Instead, it featured a low-saturation Morandi color palette. The solid wood furniture felt smooth and textured, and the sunlight filtering through the semi-transparent sheers onto the carpet, combined with a faint white tea scent in the air, meant there was no pungent new-renovation smell at all. The biggest surprise was the bedding – it had just the right firmness for my bad back, hitting my comfort sweet spot. With two pillow options, one high and one low, even a picky pillow person like me found a perfect match. I fell asleep instantly every night of my three-day trip, and even my dreams felt sweeter 😴.

The bathroom area was incredibly well-designed for guests! The shower had great water pressure, hot water instantly, and the lather rinsed off easily. Even the shower gel was orange-scented, leaving me smelling fresh and fruity all over. The amenity box was made from biodegradable materials, showing a thoughtful commitment to environmental protection in the details. The sink counter had ample space for all my toiletries, so I no longer had to squeeze when doing my makeup – it's so considerate for women! 👏

Breakfast on the second day also exceeded my expectations! It wasn't just a perfunctory cold buffet. The freshly made wontons burst with savory meat filling, the freshly ground coffee was rich and aromatic, and even the congee was perfectly thick and sticky. Paired with crispy pickled vegetables, a bowl in the morning warmed my stomach. The dining area was also spotless, and the staff cleared tables promptly, so you never saw any messy tables. When I casually asked for recommendations for good food nearby, a staff member even drew me a handwritten map, and the local eateries they recommended were much more to my taste than any internet-famous spots!

The location couldn't be better. It's a ten-minute walk to the subway station, making it super convenient for getting to shopping districts and attractions. Just around the corner is the old city's wet market; buying fresh lychees in the morning and strolling around felt so authentic. Returning to the hotel at night, it was so quiet you could only hear the wind outside the window. This 'tranquility in the midst of hustle and bustle' location is absolutely perfect.

When I checked out after three days, the front desk even gave us two boxes of local osmanthus cakes as a souvenir, telling us to take them home to try. This kind of unforced warmth felt so comfortable – not overly solicitous, yet making you feel cared for in every detail.

I will definitely stay here again next time I visit this city! I've already recommended it to friends who are planning to visit. If you're looking for comfortable and thoughtful accommodation, you really should go for it – you definitely won't regret it! ✅


The location is super convenient; as soon as you step out of the hotel, you're surrounded by all sorts of restaurants and convenience stores. The room itself was very clean and comfortable, well-equipped too. The staff were really friendly and helpful, always ready to answer any questions. Highly recommend this place, I'd definitely come back!

Not far from the subway station, which makes getting around very convenient. There are many restaurants downstairs. The service attitude was great, very warm and welcoming. The hotel was also very quiet. I would definitely choose this hotel again next time I visit Tokyo.

well located and generally clean, except for you, but well I think it must be difficult to keep clean with the number of people. there are not enough toilets for all the people. The bathrooms are clean, well appointed and airy. The beds are clean and comfortable. Negative point: all the lockers are located in one room, there is a lot of traffic in a room and some guests allow themselves to talk loudly while others are asleep. perhaps they feel that it does not matter since it is not their room

Location is absolutely perfect. Very well connected with 4 metros stations nearby. Room is bigger than average in Tokyo. Staff was helpful. They have small kids corner so our 5 year old can play a bit while we were waiting at reception. Lots of food options nearby, it is a busy area late night but we did not hear much noise. Rooms has windows however those are facing the wall of the next building and it is kind of dark even with curtains open. We stayed there initially for 4 nights and then decided to extend for another 2 night as we liked the place.

Every time I go out, I pass by the front desk, and the staff always greets me, which I feel a little embarrassed about.
I used the hotel for business, so I can't comment on the accommodation, but the location was good, the room was spacious, and it was convenient.

This place is good and very near to the train station. The buffet is good but not so fantastic. Also same food selection for the whole stay hence a bit not so exciting but just nice to fill up the stomach.

First off, this location is a bit out of the way, if you intend to stay close to the downtown...you have to take the ”Portliner” a few stops.

No issue for me, but did not realize this when I booked.
I chose it because of the onsen / sauna, and I was very satisfied: this was the best sauna / cold tub I had in Japan (so far).

Was hotter (and colder) than anything else. The actual hot-tub was good too, but I focus on sauna ＞ cold tub cycles more than anything.

Rooms are new and look good, if not a bit small. As expected. 

Stay for a night if you are on the fence...use the onsen...have a coffee-milk afterwards. You'll feel great.

Rooftoop bar / restaurant was nice as well and very friendly staff!

The hotel's location is great, about a 10-minute walk from Susukino subway station. The front desk is on the 8th floor. There's a strange smell in the elevator and on the 8th floor near the reception, possibly because guests have to take off their shoes, which might contribute to an unpleasant odor. Every night before bed, I enjoyed a hot spring bath, which was absolutely wonderful! Thumbs up!
