Where to Buy a Vietnam eSIM? Top 3 Cheapest Plans 2026
The most reliable way to purchase a Vietnam eSIM is online through trusted travel platforms before your trip begins. You can use the coupon for most eSIM products (some may not be applicable).

What is a Vietnam eSIM and How Does It Work?
A Vietnam eSIM is a digital version of a traditional SIM card that is already embedded directly into your smartphone's hardware. Instead of inserting a physical piece of plastic into your phone tray, you download a digital profile onto your device.
It works by connecting your phone to major local Vietnamese telecommunications networks (such as Vinaphone, Viettel, or Mobifone) via software. Once you buy a plan, you receive a digital QR code via email. Scanning this code configures your phone to access local data networks automatically when you land in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or any other region in Vietnam.

Vietnam eSIM vs. Physical SIM vs. Pocket Wi-Fi vs. Roaming

To decide which option fits your travel style, it helps to compare the four primary methods for accessing the internet in Vietnam.
Feature | Vietnam eSIM | Physical Local SIM | Pocket Wi-Fi Router | International Roaming |
Convenience | Highest - Instant digital delivery via QR code. No physical swaps. | Medium - Must find an airport kiosk or local store and swap cards. | Low - Requires carrying an extra device and keeping it charged. | High - Keeps your existing carrier active instantly. |
Cost | Low - Highly competitive local rates starting under $1 per day. | Low - Affordable, but watch out for tourist markups at airports. | Medium - Daily rental fees plus a mandatory return deposit. | Highest - Expensive daily flat rates or steep per-megabyte fees. |
Phone Number | Mostly data-only, but some premium local options include one. | Typically includes a local number for voice calls and text messages. | Data-only connection shared via local Wi-Fi signal. | Keeps your original home country phone number active. |
Risk of Loss | Zero - Completely digital and stored safely on your phone's chip. | Medium - High risk of losing your small home SIM card while swapped. | Medium - Fine or fee if you lose, drop, or damage the rented device. | Zero - No hardware changes or extra devices needed. |
Which to Choose for Foreigners?
- Choose an eSIM if your phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM technology. It provides the best balance of local data speeds, budget pricing, and convenience without the risk of losing your original home SIM card.
- Choose a Physical Local SIM if your device is an older model that does not support eSIMs, or if you absolutely require a traditional local phone number to make standard voice calls.
- Choose Pocket Wi-Fi if you travel in a large family group or have multiple laptops and tablets that need constant internet access simultaneously.
- Choose Roaming only if your home carrier offers an affordable international plan or if you only need emergency connectivity and do not mind paying premium rates.
How to Activate and Use Your Vietnam eSIM

Setting up your digital SIM takes only a few steps. It is highly recommended to complete the installation process while you are still at home or at the departure airport using a stable Wi-Fi connection.
Step 1: Check Device Compatibility
Before purchasing, confirm your phone is fully unlocked by your home carrier and supports eSIM hardware.
Quick Test: Open your phone’s call dialer and enter
*#06#. If an EID number appears on your screen, your device supports eSIM technology.

Step 2: Installation (Do this before departure)
- Open your email on a secondary device (like a laptop or tablet) or print out the QR code sent by the provider. You can install eSIM directly on Trip.com
- Go to your phone’s Settings > Cellular / Mobile Data > Add eSIM / Add Data Plan.
- Point your phone camera at the QR code and follow the on-screen prompts to download the profile.
- Label the new profile clearly as "Vietnam" to distinguish it from your primary home SIM.
Step 3: Activation (Do this when you land in Vietnam)
- Upon landing, navigate back to your cellular settings and turn the Vietnam eSIM profile ON.
- Set this eSIM as your primary source for Mobile Data.
- Crucial Step: Toggle Data Roaming to ON specifically for the Vietnam eSIM profile. This allows the digital profile to register properly with the local networks.
- Restart your phone if the local network status bars do not appear within a few minutes.

Do You Need a Local Phone Number for Vietnam?
Most travel eSIMs sold online are data-only. They do not include a traditional (+84) Vietnamese phone number for making standard cellular voice calls or sending SMS texts.
- When data-only is fine: For 95% of tourists, data-only is perfect. You can easily communicate with local tour guides, hotels, and drivers through internet-based apps like Grab, WhatsApp, and Zalo.
- When you need a phone number: If you intend to rent a motorbike from a local shop, book reservations at high-end restaurants that require a call back, or register for local accounts that require SMS verification code confirmation, make sure to read the product description carefully and choose a premium eSIM tier that explicitly lists an included local phone number.
Best Vietnam Mobile Network Operators (Carriers)

When choosing a plan on Trip.com, look at which local network infrastructure the eSIM routes through. Vietnam has three major dominant providers:
- Viettel: The state-owned market leader. It offers the most extensive coverage across Vietnam, making it the absolute best choice if you are traveling to rural areas, trekking in Sapa, or taking cruise boats through Ha Long Bay.
- Vinaphone: Excellent, highly stable high-speed data networks in all major metropolitan cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An.
- Mobifone: A solid option with fast data speeds across major coastal tourist destinations and large urban areas, though coverage can occasionally thin out in remote mountainous regions.
How Much Data Do You Need for Vietnam?

The amount of data you should purchase depends entirely on your travel style and how often you plan to use hotel Wi-Fi networks. Because mobile data is very affordable in Vietnam, opting for a slightly higher data tier is usually the most practical choice.
- Light Users (1GB per day): Ideal if you primarily use your phone for Google Maps navigation, booking Grab rides, exchanging text messages on WhatsApp or Zalo, and checking emails.
- Heavy Users (2GB to 4GB per day or Unlimited): Necessary if you frequently upload travel videos or photos to Instagram and TikTok, stream music, use FaceTime/video calling, or work remotely using your phone as a mobile hotspot.
Essential Travel Apps to Download for Vietnam

To make the most of your continuous internet connection, ensure you download these applications before arriving:
- Grab: The ultimate transportation and food delivery app for Southeast Asia. Use it to book safe, fixed-price car or motorbike rides across major cities without dealing with language barriers or taxi meter scams.
- Google Maps: Indispensable for navigating walking routes in dense historic quarters and checking public transit routes.
- Google Translate: Download the offline Vietnamese language pack. The camera translation feature is incredibly helpful for deciphering restaurant menus and street signs.
- Zalo: The primary messaging app used by local businesses, hotels, and tour operators throughout Vietnam.

The location is good, the room is very clean. The service is good too. I am happy with all of this.
What made me unhappy and inconvenient, the reasons I gave two stars for amenties are as follows:
1) toilet - clean yes, but the water pump is top strong and inconvenient to press, feel like I am pressing a broken handle water pump.
2) trash bin - in the toilet, it is difficult to push down the cover, too strong, so always ended up touching my hand with the cover where most of the trashed from the toilet were in contact with while pushing down. In the room, the cover, always need to use hands to remove the cover.
3) Electricity plug sockets - should have at least two free, one each by each bed. But what we had to use is the one for TV plug, the one for night light bulb (between the bed). Only one free socket by the mirror in the bedroom. So very inconvenience for two persons to charge our phones or laptops.FromKRW 126,892

The hotel's location is a bit far from the city center, which was especially inconvenient for getting taxis during the Spring Festival. However, there are plenty of dining and entertainment options nearby. The hotel also has a rooftop swimming pool and a hot spring pool, which were very enjoyable. Had a wonderful stay at MAI HOUSE Saigon Hotel! The hotel was very clean, peaceful, and comfortable throughout our stay. The room service food arrived quickly and tasted great. Location was also very convenient — close to many attractions and only around 3 minutes walking distance to a convenience store. Even though it’s centrally located, the hotel was still quiet and relaxing at night. The staff were friendly and helpful as well. Pros: amazingly delicious buffet breakfast from western to asian cuisines. Delicious food and always fresh seasonal fruits. Menu changes daily. Their Triple Roomnis quiet spacious with bonggavillas on window sills. Room is cleaned and linens changed on a daily basis. Bar at the rooftop with jacuzzis and spa pool which added to the zen vibes. Lobby is dimly lighted but just enough to light the way which I think uphholds to its ZEN vibes. The location is superb. Next to it are spas for hair, nails, massage and 3 mins walk right through ben thanh market, saigon square, saigon center. 10 mins walk to Notre Dame Cathedral. Easy to catch Grab. Staff are all very friendly, helpful and communicates in English well.
Cons: they don't have a swimming pool as what is advertised on its amenities. It's more like a spa pool where clients can sit, dip and maybe drink some coctails while watching the night lights and relaxing with the zen environment. However, the spa pool is perfect for my 8 yo nephew. He can play, swim on the pool without us worrying that the water might be deep for him. Bath tub is high so its not good for a short elderly client who got issues with mobility. My 78 yo mom got a hard time climbing in and out of the tub as its also slippery. We finally managed by letting her sit on th edge of the tub first before putting her foot in/out of the tub and putting towel on the floor of the tub while she's showering.FromKRW 60,329

The bathroom had an unpleasant smell( musty smell), likely from the water system, and ventilation only runs on the hotel’s schedule, so the odor often lingered. An absolutely amazing experience, I will definitely stay here again next time I visit Vietnam:
Check-in (Top-notch): We were offered welcome snacks and drinks upon arrival, which was a lovely and unique touch.
Room (Excellent): The room left a fantastic impression on me. The high ceilings made it feel incredibly spacious, and the solid wood flooring was very comfortable underfoot. Coupled with the genuine oil painting above the bed, the entire room exuded a sense of quality and sophistication—this is truly the kind of experience one expects from an established five-star hotel. The room also had a balcony overlooking the pool, which was warm and inviting with natural sunlight during the day. The air conditioner's outdoor unit was on the balcony, and while it made some noise at night, it wasn't overly disruptive.
Breakfast (Excellent): Not only was there a wide variety, but the dishes also rotated. I had breakfast three times, and each time there were slight variations in the offerings, a level of thoughtfulness that is truly rare. Additionally, there were freshly prepared pho, omelets, and sandwiches. The chef could even customize omelets according to individual preferences, a service I've rarely encountered despite traveling to so many places.
Service (Outstanding): Whether it was the doorman, the front desk staff, or the housekeeping team who cleaned our room daily, everyone was incredibly enthusiastic. Every evening during turn-down service, in addition to biscuits, a local short story was provided, which was a very thoughtful touch. In fact, the attention to service details can already be inferred from my previous descriptions; I'm giving it an 'outstanding' rating here.
Location (Top-notch): The location is very central, with most attractions within a 30-minute walk. The only minor inconvenience was the lack of traffic lights at the intersection, which made crossing the street a bit tricky when there was heavy traffic.
Overall, an outstanding hotel. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit.FromKRW 170,525

This is a hotel of contradictions.
The facade is impressive. It's centrally located in District 1 near restaurants, shops and the Western quarter. The buffet breakfast selection is pleasing. The room size is generous. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a forward thinking eco-friendly policy which clearly implemented throughout the hotel.
However, the hotel is let down by some of its facilities. For example, in the bathroom a spa has been placed under a shower head so that when you shower the water runs down the wall and floods across the bathroom floor from one side to the other and in front of the hand basin. The hot and cold water taps turn on in opposite directions and the cold tap is not fitted properly which causes it to move. My children were unable to turn the shower on or off without adult help. The shower head is also too low and my 6 foot husband had to crouch down to shower.
Another problem area is the rooftop pool area. The clear rooptop pool perimeter fence is woefully too low. I watched a child climb out of the pool to the ledge between the pool and the perimeter fence and I was very worried for his safety. One wrong slip or stumble and there's nothing stopping the child from toppling over the edge and 11 floors down.
This hotel has a lot going for it but also has further room for improvement.FromKRW 78,584

This place is hard to find even to some locals, and its especially hard for foreigners to come by for the first time. It's a newly building with security at the lobby, and there are shops and restaurants near by which is convenient. However; there is hardly a management of this property, we booked for 4days 3 nights and there were only 4 bottles in total and we had no respond when we required for more water bottles.(good thing is shops are close by.) Secondly, we also had no respond when we requied of house cleaning, we found and killed Cockroaches everyday. Last but not least, the third night of stay hot water running out, I had to take a cold shower. I don't mind taking cold showers in Vietnam's current weather, its just i didnt have an option of hot water makes this stay less worthy.
There are also some pros of this property, the views are good, you get to see the landmark 81 building right outside the window, and some parts of river view. Besides the views, they use good quality bedding appliances (mattresses are great) and electrical appliances(dryer in your closet, you get to hang your wet clothes, sanitize and dry them).
Overall, I would come back and live here if the management can starting to catch up.FromKRW 195,459

My third time at this hotel. Very convenient because of the location, the reception staff are very pleasant and happy to help you. The breakfast is very boring. Cheap ingredients. And the room is too small for the number of guests even though they added a room. Going down the stairs is not the most convenient. And the service lacks character, the cook does a great job and always fills in what is missing. You can see that he is professional and experienced. And he is also very friendly. But we took sandwiches for the long train ride and I must say that this was the biggest disappointment. Because I did not take a sandwich down to the kitchen for myself, because to get a sandwich from the dining room I am supposed to pay extra. Although only a few dollars, the principle is completely stupid. The sandwich I received was terrible, dry, boring, made from two slices of cheap bread, a kind of cheese leaf and a hard-boiled egg. The concierge team is very experience and friendly in helping us find a 24 hour clinic. The view at floor 25 is really good. They have an infinity pool at the rooftop which can see the whole of HCMC cityview.FromKRW 150,935

We booked a Signature River View room. The room was well-equipped, though not quite as good as an Atour Hotel in China, but the service was truly excellent! Booking this room type gave us complimentary access to the Executive Lounge on the 23rd floor. From 3 PM to 5 PM, there's free food and drinks there – their cashews are particularly delicious! From 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM, they have cocktails (but we didn't go, haha). There's free laundry service daily and chocolates left for you at night. The service really is top-notch! The hotel breakfast is more Western-style but very extensive, and we all loved it. The hotel's location is unbeatable – within walking distance of The Cafe Apartment, City Hall, the Opera House, and the night bus pick-up point. The Fine Arts Museum and Ben Thanh Market also seem to be within walking distance. The Pink Church and Independence Palace are just a short taxi ride away, very close. Downstairs, there are plenty of massage shops and restaurants, and there's also a currency exchange next door, so it's super convenient!FromKRW 107,524

Had a very pleasant stay at Liberty Central Saigon Citypoint Hotel. The location is excellent, close to many attractions, restaurants, and shops. The room was clean and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The rooftop pool and city view were great highlights. Overall, a convenient and comfortable hotel. I would definitely stay here again.FromKRW 126,447

The hotel's location is excellent, very close to the Independence Palace and Ho Chi Minh Central Post Office, both about a 5-minute walk away. There are good restaurant options nearby, and if you want to take a city tour bus, you can catch it right in front of the post office. The hotel ambiance is great, with a vintage yet modern decor. The hotel's cleanliness is also commendable. For breakfast, they offer both Vietnamese local specialties and Western options. All hotel staff can speak English. If you'd like to see the traditional Vietnamese water puppet show, you can turn right out of the hotel and walk straight for about 10 minutes to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater.FromKRW 206,367

An amazing boutique hotel in District 3, just a short 10-min Gtab ride away from the more touristy District 1.
We booked the corner suite to celebrate our anniversary and was glad we did! The moment we entered the room, we were greeted with a beautiful high-ceiling loft studio suite with lots of cosy and homey vibes. Best of all were the full-length windows that gave a very open rustic cabin lodge feel. Just needed a fireplace to complete it.
Loved that it’s not a typical hotel room. Bathroom was just as spacious with a gigantic bath tub for 2!
Only setback as highlighted by many other reviewers was the position of the shower, which causes water to pool near the doorway. A layout issue that would be good to fix.
Ceiling fan was a little glitchy and didn’t work most of the time. But with the strong aircon, there really wasn’t a real need for the fan.
Breakfast spread was great too. Not expansive, but just good with the essential stuff.
On the whole, we loved our stay here - the proximity to tourist spots, fairly quiet surroundings, and clean environment. Though a bit pricier as a boutique hotel, we would not hesitate to be back.FromKRW 141,362

This French-style hotel has all the amenities, including a swimming pool and a mini-gym. The service is also excellent, and the breakfast and afternoon tea are quite substantial. We had a minor issue with our room, but it was resolved promptly. The location is convenient for getting around, with supermarkets and dining options nearby. Overall, highly recommended!FromKRW 114,203

Highly recommend anyone coming to Ho Chi Minh City to stay here! Location is super nice & close to main attractions, staffs are very thoughtful & attentive, room is clean & interior is very unique. The hotel also has a skyroof-like restaurant which serves fusion food and the prices are still affordable for me. They also give out complimentary drinks and afternoon tea time to guest. You can also borrow powerbank, city bikes, and traditional hat for free at the reception. Plus, when I am about to travel back to the airport, they have a special Grab code for the guests of this hotel that gives you 20% off! Very nice experience indeedFromKRW 70,570

We did not have a perfect experience from this stay at Somerset HCM hence no full marks. Apartment - we were allocated a non-ideal ground floor 2 bedroom apartment facing the swimming pool, we requested for a change of room at the point of check in but were denied repeatedly. There was a pool party at the pool with a high noise level. We made a complaint, the reception then offered a room change for the next day but we declined having already unpacked & settled in. There is no pool view as we had to close the curtains throughout the stay for privacy reasons. The TV in the master bedroom was not working at all, we made a request, they repaired the TV after a long time on the second night but it was spoilt again. We gave up & did not made another request. The TV should have been checked that it is in order before allowing guests to check in. Other than these 2 negative points, the apartment was simply great. The kitchen was clean and well equipped with a washing machine, microwave and conventional ovens, crockery & kitchen utensils. The 2 bedrooms and bathrooms were clean and well equipped too. Housekeeping is great, apartment was cleaned and refreshed well daily. Location is fine. It may not be that convenient to shopping, food & places of interest but it is not a problem at all in HCM as it is so easy and affordable to take a Grab to anywhere. For info, we stayed 3 nights and paid higher than average rates for this 2 bedroom apartment.FromKRW 195,459

The hotel is located off a quieter street, within 12mins walking distance to Ben Thanh market. There’s a coffee place right at the entrance of the hotel serving great coffee. 2 bottles of water replenished daily in the room with drip coffee and tea bags available. Toilet works great, no foul smell, no leaks and flush working properly. Room is well air conditioned, we had a good rest here. There’s simple breakfast provided in the restaurant located at level 11. A variety of western and local Vietnamese options available.FromKRW 83,259

Great location, right on Bui Vien Walking Street. I booked a dorm bed and it was comfortable enough. It's the most convenient option if you're just stopping over for a day. The hotel lobby is spacious, and there's an elevator. Plus, there are several mini-marts and convenience stores just 10-20 meters away. The music on Bui Vien Street can be loud at night, so it's best suited for guests who are used to sleeping in the late hours.FromKRW 17,142
FAQs about Vietnam eSIM
-
Does my phone need to be carrier-unlocked to use a Vietnam eSIM?
Yes. Your smartphone must be fully unlocked by your home mobile operator. If your device is currently locked to a specific network contract or financial installment plan, the downloaded Vietnam eSIM profile will fail to register or connect to local networks upon arrival. -
Can I use WhatsApp, WeChat, or iMessage normally while using the eSIM?
Yes. Your data-reliant applications will function without interruption. When you configure the eSIM, set it to handle Mobile Data only while keeping your regular home SIM card active for Default Voice/Primary Lines. This allows your messaging applications to remain tied to your original home country phone number while using the local Vietnamese eSIM data. -
Can I reuse or transfer my Vietnam eSIM to another phone?
No. Most international travel eSIM profiles are issued as single-use software credentials. Once a profile is successfully scanned and mapped to a specific smartphone's internal chip, it cannot be downloaded again, scanned by a second phone, or reinstalled if you accidentally delete it from your settings. -
Does a data-only eSIM allow me to receive local SMS verification codes?
No. Data-only eSIM plans do not provision a traditional network mobile number capable of receiving inbound cellular SMS texts or standard network voice calls. If you need to register for local services that strictly require an SMS verification code, verify that you are purchasing a premium eSIM tier that explicitly lists an included local (+84) phone number. -
Should I install the eSIM before I depart or after I arrive in Vietnam?
Always complete the installation steps prior to departure while connected to a stable, high-speed home or airport Wi-Fi network. The installation process requires an active internet connection to securely download the profile from the server. Once installed, keep the line turned off and simply switch it on when your flight lands in Vietnam.
