What is a Vietnam eSIM and How Does It Work?

A Vietnam eSIM is a digital version of a traditional SIM card that is already embedded directly into your smartphone's hardware. Instead of inserting a physical piece of plastic into your phone tray, you download a digital profile onto your device.

It works by connecting your phone to major local Vietnamese telecommunications networks (such as Vinaphone, Viettel, or Mobifone) via software. Once you buy a plan, you receive a digital QR code via email. Scanning this code configures your phone to access local data networks automatically when you land in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or any other region in Vietnam.

Vietnam eSIM vs. Physical SIM vs. Pocket Wi-Fi vs. Roaming

Vietnam eSIM vs. Physical SIM vs. Pocket Wi-Fi vs. Roaming

To decide which option fits your travel style, it helps to compare the four primary methods for accessing the internet in Vietnam.

Feature

Vietnam eSIM

Physical Local SIM

Pocket Wi-Fi Router

International Roaming

Convenience

Highest - Instant digital delivery via QR code. No physical swaps.

Medium - Must find an airport kiosk or local store and swap cards.

Low - Requires carrying an extra device and keeping it charged.

High - Keeps your existing carrier active instantly.

Cost

Low - Highly competitive local rates starting under $1 per day.

Low - Affordable, but watch out for tourist markups at airports.

Medium - Daily rental fees plus a mandatory return deposit.

Highest - Expensive daily flat rates or steep per-megabyte fees.

Phone Number

Mostly data-only, but some premium local options include one.

Typically includes a local number for voice calls and text messages.

Data-only connection shared via local Wi-Fi signal.

Keeps your original home country phone number active.

Risk of Loss

Zero - Completely digital and stored safely on your phone's chip.

Medium - High risk of losing your small home SIM card while swapped.

Medium - Fine or fee if you lose, drop, or damage the rented device.

Zero - No hardware changes or extra devices needed.

Which to Choose for Foreigners?

  • Choose an eSIM if your phone is carrier-unlocked and supports eSIM technology. It provides the best balance of local data speeds, budget pricing, and convenience without the risk of losing your original home SIM card.
  • Choose a Physical Local SIM if your device is an older model that does not support eSIMs, or if you absolutely require a traditional local phone number to make standard voice calls.
  • Choose Pocket Wi-Fi if you travel in a large family group or have multiple laptops and tablets that need constant internet access simultaneously.
  • Choose Roaming only if your home carrier offers an affordable international plan or if you only need emergency connectivity and do not mind paying premium rates.

How to Activate and Use Your Vietnam eSIM

China eSIM Compatible Phones

Setting up your digital SIM takes only a few steps. It is highly recommended to complete the installation process while you are still at home or at the departure airport using a stable Wi-Fi connection.

Step 1: Check Device Compatibility

Before purchasing, confirm your phone is fully unlocked by your home carrier and supports eSIM hardware.

Quick Test: Open your phone’s call dialer and enter *#06#. If an EID number appears on your screen, your device supports eSIM technology.

How to Activate and Use Your Vietnam eSIM

Step 2: Installation (Do this before departure)

  1. Open your email on a secondary device (like a laptop or tablet) or print out the QR code sent by the provider. You can install eSIM directly on Trip.com
  2. Go to your phone’s Settings > Cellular / Mobile Data > Add eSIM / Add Data Plan.
  3. Point your phone camera at the QR code and follow the on-screen prompts to download the profile.
  4. Label the new profile clearly as "Vietnam" to distinguish it from your primary home SIM.

Step 3: Activation (Do this when you land in Vietnam)

  1. Upon landing, navigate back to your cellular settings and turn the Vietnam eSIM profile ON.
  2. Set this eSIM as your primary source for Mobile Data.
  3. Crucial Step: Toggle Data Roaming to ON specifically for the Vietnam eSIM profile. This allows the digital profile to register properly with the local networks.
  4. Restart your phone if the local network status bars do not appear within a few minutes.
👉Pro Tip: To stay connected throughout your visit, consider getting a Vietnam eSIM. Just activate and go!

Do You Need a Local Phone Number for Vietnam?

Most travel eSIMs sold online are data-only. They do not include a traditional (+84) Vietnamese phone number for making standard cellular voice calls or sending SMS texts.

  • When data-only is fine: For 95% of tourists, data-only is perfect. You can easily communicate with local tour guides, hotels, and drivers through internet-based apps like Grab, WhatsApp, and Zalo.
  • When you need a phone number: If you intend to rent a motorbike from a local shop, book reservations at high-end restaurants that require a call back, or register for local accounts that require SMS verification code confirmation, make sure to read the product description carefully and choose a premium eSIM tier that explicitly lists an included local phone number.

Best Vietnam Mobile Network Operators (Carriers)

Best Vietnam Mobile Network Operators (Carriers)

When choosing a plan on Trip.com, look at which local network infrastructure the eSIM routes through. Vietnam has three major dominant providers:

  • Viettel: The state-owned market leader. It offers the most extensive coverage across Vietnam, making it the absolute best choice if you are traveling to rural areas, trekking in Sapa, or taking cruise boats through Ha Long Bay.
  • Vinaphone: Excellent, highly stable high-speed data networks in all major metropolitan cities like Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An.
  • Mobifone: A solid option with fast data speeds across major coastal tourist destinations and large urban areas, though coverage can occasionally thin out in remote mountainous regions.

How Much Data Do You Need for Vietnam?

How Much Data Do You Need for Vietnam?

The amount of data you should purchase depends entirely on your travel style and how often you plan to use hotel Wi-Fi networks. Because mobile data is very affordable in Vietnam, opting for a slightly higher data tier is usually the most practical choice.

  • Light Users (1GB per day): Ideal if you primarily use your phone for Google Maps navigation, booking Grab rides, exchanging text messages on WhatsApp or Zalo, and checking emails.
  • Heavy Users (2GB to 4GB per day or Unlimited): Necessary if you frequently upload travel videos or photos to Instagram and TikTok, stream music, use FaceTime/video calling, or work remotely using your phone as a mobile hotspot.

Essential Travel Apps to Download for Vietnam

Essential Travel Apps to Download for Vietnam

To make the most of your continuous internet connection, ensure you download these applications before arriving:

  • Grab: The ultimate transportation and food delivery app for Southeast Asia. Use it to book safe, fixed-price car or motorbike rides across major cities without dealing with language barriers or taxi meter scams.
  • Google Maps: Indispensable for navigating walking routes in dense historic quarters and checking public transit routes.
  • Google Translate: Download the offline Vietnamese language pack. The camera translation feature is incredibly helpful for deciphering restaurant menus and street signs.
  • Zalo: The primary messaging app used by local businesses, hotels, and tour operators throughout Vietnam.

A Flawless Stay at Eastin Grand Hotel Saigon From the moment my taxi pulled up to the sleek entrance of the Eastin Grand Hotel Saigon, I knew I was in for an exceptional stay. As a traveler who values both efficiency and comfort, this hotel completely blew me away by striking the perfect balance between upscale luxury and unmatched convenience. The Ultimate Location Location is everything in Ho Chi Minh City, and Eastin Grand nails it. Airport Proximity: Situated just a brief 10-minute drive from Tan Son Nhat International Airport, it completely eliminates the stress of missing a flight or battling heavy traffic after a long journey. City Access: It serves as a strategic launchpad. Whether I needed to zip into District 1 for sightseeing or head to the bustling commercial districts for meetings, the transit was effortless. Premium Comfort & World-Class Hospitality The indoor experience is just as seamless. My room was a haven of contemporary sophistication—spacious, impeccably clean, and fitted with plush bedding that offered a restful escape from the energetic city outside. Standout Feature: The executive lounge access is a must-try. Sipping a perfectly crafted cocktail while looking over the city skyline was a daily highlight. The staff deserves a special mention; their warm hospitality and intuitive service made me feel genuinely cared for, rather than just another room number. With its top-tier amenities, exquisite dining options, and frictionless logistics, Eastin Grand Hotel Saigon didn’t just host me—it elevated my entire Ho Chi Minh City experience. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The location is good, the room is very clean. The service is good too. I am happy with all of this. What made me unhappy and inconvenient, the reasons I gave two stars for amenties are as follows: 1) toilet - clean yes, but the water pump is top strong and inconvenient to press, feel like I am pressing a broken handle water pump. 2) trash bin - in the toilet, it is difficult to push down the cover, too strong, so always ended up touching my hand with the cover where most of the trashed from the toilet were in contact with while pushing down. In the room, the cover, always need to use hands to remove the cover. 3) Electricity plug sockets - should have at least two free, one each by each bed. But what we had to use is the one for TV plug, the one for night light bulb (between the bed). Only one free socket by the mirror in the bedroom. So very inconvenience for two persons to charge our phones or laptops.

Honestly, this place is beautiful, clean space, fantastic amenities, everything you could need at a gym, including sauna and steam rooms. The pool is basically on the roof with the spa's, beautiful view of the city when the weather is right. The room was spacious and used well with a table to sit at, reading chair, bed, TV, room service. The bathroom was a nice size, my room had a bath/shower combined it was lovely but very high just in case that's something you need to worry about (: the service was wonderful. I don't really have anything to fault about this place, but I wish I could have stayed longer :) Book it, you won't regret it 🥰 Breakfast was amazing, so many options and fresh new items each day🖤

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel during our trip to Vietnam. The room was spacious, spotless, and well-equipped with everything we needed. The staff provided exceptional service and made us feel welcome from check-in to check-out. The location was perfect, with easy access to local attractions, restaurants, and transportation. The breakfast buffet offered a great variety of both local and international dishes. Overall, it was an excellent experience, and we would gladly return on our next visit.

I saw some reviews saying the service was bad and that they discriminated against Chinese guests, but my actual experience was very good; the service was professional and enthusiastic. Everything else was standard, quite good, but I can't give it a 5-star rating. There's a Michelin restaurant called Man Moi near the hotel with a great ambiance and good food. For around 200 (currency not specified, assuming local currency), you can have a decent meal. There's also a good Japanese restaurant nearby (though I don't recommend the tempura; it's too greasy). Compared to what I saw online, the hotel's design isn't particularly outstanding; it's quite conventional. If you're not on a tight budget, you won't be disappointed. The photos are from Man Moi restaurant, which has a great vibe. It's best to make a reservation as walk-ins might not get a table.

Pros: amazingly delicious buffet breakfast from western to asian cuisines. Delicious food and always fresh seasonal fruits. Menu changes daily. Their Triple Roomnis quiet spacious with bonggavillas on window sills. Room is cleaned and linens changed on a daily basis. Bar at the rooftop with jacuzzis and spa pool which added to the zen vibes. Lobby is dimly lighted but just enough to light the way which I think uphholds to its ZEN vibes. The location is superb. Next to it are spas for hair, nails, massage and 3 mins walk right through ben thanh market, saigon square, saigon center. 10 mins walk to Notre Dame Cathedral. Easy to catch Grab. Staff are all very friendly, helpful and communicates in English well. Cons: they don't have a swimming pool as what is advertised on its amenities. It's more like a spa pool where clients can sit, dip and maybe drink some coctails while watching the night lights and relaxing with the zen environment. However, the spa pool is perfect for my 8 yo nephew. He can play, swim on the pool without us worrying that the water might be deep for him. Bath tub is high so its not good for a short elderly client who got issues with mobility. My 78 yo mom got a hard time climbing in and out of the tub as its also slippery. We finally managed by letting her sit on th edge of the tub first before putting her foot in/out of the tub and putting towel on the floor of the tub while she's showering.

Hello, I was the guest in room 206, checking in on June 30th. After resting for a bit, I went out around 3 PM. When I left, my suitcase was open, and inside were clothes and a GoPro camera, which was attached to a neck strap mount and not easy to remove. When I returned in the evening, I noticed the room had been tidied. The next morning, I checked out and left my luggage at the hotel. Around 6 PM that afternoon, I returned to pick up my luggage to go to the airport. During that time, I opened my suitcase once at the luggage storage area to put something in. I didn't use the GoPro at all during my two days and one night in Ho Chi Minh City, so I didn't pay close attention to it. Afterward, I flew directly to Hanoi, and at the hotel there, I discovered my GoPro was missing from my suitcase, with only the neck strap mount remaining. I contacted you to help me look for the camera, but you said it hadn't been seen. After returning home, I carefully replayed all the events in my mind, and it's only possible that it went missing at your hotel. I hope that after seeing this review, you can help me check the surveillance footage again and contact me.

1. 16sq. mtr room is marketed and sold as a 20sq.mtr room. Its basically a glorified/polished container box. There is no space even to unpack/open your luggage. This is outright fraud and cheating. 2. Air conditioning is very poor. Despite such a small room size, it takes nearly an hour for the room to reach the set temperature even if you open the door even once. The staff too has confirmed the same that it takes 30min to 1hour to reach the desired cooling after closing the room doors. 3. Air conditioning break downs frequently. We had booked 17 rooms for our a group of 34 people. 3 to 4 had broken AC. One of them shifted in the middle of the night to a new room. On complaining the first time, the engineer came and fixed the filter. However the staff blamed us for keeping the door open. On complaining again, I was assured that the staff if coming only to realize that they were lying. Had to go physically to the reception and get the room changed. They were hoping that I would sleep with the broken AC instead of taking the pain to come down to the reception. On top of that the windows don't open. You don't have any ventilation as well. 3. The doors and walls are very thin. You can hear every door closing and even the slightest noise/conversation from nearby rooms. 4. The staff is very cold and unhelpful. Despite acknowledging the known problem about the AC they try to blame the guest for keeping the doors open. How is the guest supposed to breathe with no AC and no ventilation? If you are frustrated and get angry at the staff, they threaten you to throw you out of the hotel in the middle of the night by calling the police. 5. The windows are completely transparent. The nearby bldg people can peep in to your rooms anytime and hence the curtains need to be kept drawn all the time. 6. I am vegetarian so didn't find much options in breakfast. There were some fruits but they would get finished fast and then not refilled even during valid breakfast hours. When I checked reviews of this hotel after facing the above problems, multiple guests have reported the same issues.

The breakfast spread is quite good, and those who enjoy Western food will be happy. When I had breakfast between 7:45 AM and 8:10 AM, everyone except me (an Asian) was a Westerner. This is a hotel of contradictions. The facade is impressive. It's centrally located in District 1 near restaurants, shops and the Western quarter. The buffet breakfast selection is pleasing. The room size is generous. Staff are friendly and helpful. There's a forward thinking eco-friendly policy which clearly implemented throughout the hotel. However, the hotel is let down by some of its facilities. For example, in the bathroom a spa has been placed under a shower head so that when you shower the water runs down the wall and floods across the bathroom floor from one side to the other and in front of the hand basin. The hot and cold water taps turn on in opposite directions and the cold tap is not fitted properly which causes it to move. My children were unable to turn the shower on or off without adult help. The shower head is also too low and my 6 foot husband had to crouch down to shower. Another problem area is the rooftop pool area. The clear rooptop pool perimeter fence is woefully too low. I watched a child climb out of the pool to the ledge between the pool and the perimeter fence and I was very worried for his safety. One wrong slip or stumble and there's nothing stopping the child from toppling over the edge and 11 floors down. This hotel has a lot going for it but also has further room for improvement.

This place is hard to find even to some locals, and its especially hard for foreigners to come by for the first time. It's a newly building with security at the lobby, and there are shops and restaurants near by which is convenient. However; there is hardly a management of this property, we booked for 4days 3 nights and there were only 4 bottles in total and we had no respond when we required for more water bottles.(good thing is shops are close by.) Secondly, we also had no respond when we requied of house cleaning, we found and killed Cockroaches everyday. Last but not least, the third night of stay hot water running out, I had to take a cold shower. I don't mind taking cold showers in Vietnam's current weather, its just i didnt have an option of hot water makes this stay less worthy. There are also some pros of this property, the views are good, you get to see the landmark 81 building right outside the window, and some parts of river view. Besides the views, they use good quality bedding appliances (mattresses are great) and electrical appliances(dryer in your closet, you get to hang your wet clothes, sanitize and dry them). Overall, I would come back and live here if the management can starting to catch up.

This hotel is perfect for just lying around, relaxing, and doing absolutely nothing. We stayed in the Aqua Villa. The room was excellent – clean, beautiful, and comfortable. The private in-room pool had rather warm, even hot, mineral water. The downside was that over the week, the pool was only cleaned once, on the first day. A lot of leaves and flowers fall into the pool. Breakfasts were excellent. On weekdays, the hotel was almost empty. It only got busier on weekends. The grounds are very large and beautiful. Mineral pools, mud baths, etc., all cost extra! The only free amenities are the general pools (several of them) and the forest for walks. There's only one restaurant. There are no shops or anything else. You can't rent a motorbike anywhere. Grab, Maxim, and similar services don't operate here. You can only get to Binh Chau by taxi – 300,000 VND round trip. There's absolutely nothing to do in Binh Chau. And everyone stares at Russians like they're some exotic creature. Everyone wants to come up and say 'Hallow'. Conclusion: If you just want to relax in peace and quiet, do nothing, simply unwind and benefit from the mineral pools and mud baths, this is an excellent option! If you're looking for hustle and bustle with lots of restaurants, shops, and tourists – this is definitely not the place for you! It's an excellent option to just relax here for a week, and then head to Mui Ne (a 2-hour taxi ride).

We especially enjoyed the daily afternoon tea, the swimming pool, the complimentary drinks in the Executive Lounge, and the chocolates delivered to our room every evening. These thoughtful touches made our stay extra special. The only minor area for improvement would be the sound insulation of the balcony door, as there were small gaps that allowed some outside noise into the room. Improving the seal would make the room even more comfortable. Overall, we had a fantastic stay and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the city. If you'd like to see the traditional Vietnamese water puppet show, you can turn right out of the hotel and walk straight for about 10 minutes to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater.

The location isn't very central; it's a bit of a distance from most attractions, so you'll need to take a taxi everywhere. It's not far from the main road but it's surprisingly quiet. My only complaint is that I chose this hotel because the room photos showed a green window view, but my room definitely didn't have one. After checking the hotel's actual location, I'm pretty sure none of the rooms have a park view.

We were pleasantly surprised that we got a free upgrade to a bigger room. The front desk manager, Kent, is very attentive and friendly. We had a great 5D4N stay in this wonderful hotel, and everything is so nearby. Highly recommended for those who wanna stay here.

Our family of four stayed for two nights and it was pretty good. Clean and comfortable, and the location was also fine. The rooftop pool is beautiful and spacious 😍. Having a couple of drinks by the pool at night was really chill 🍻.

All the service staffs are very friendly and service are top notch. From the butler to the receptionists to the housekeeping staffs! They even provide so many free stuffs such as tea break which I didn’t get a chance to enjoy, free earplugs, free Vietnamese snacks, free poncho! When it rained, the butler hurried sheltered us with umbrella, when we stepped into the lobby everyday, the staffs will greet us. Enjoyed our stay here so it’s super near to everywhere! Walking distance to a lot of places! Will pick here again if I’m back in HCM!

Two couples traveling together booked a two-bedroom apartment. The hotel was clean, and the pho and coffee at breakfast were absolutely fantastic, easily a 100/100. The only regret was leaving clothes behind at the hotel and not being able to retrieve them due to inefficient domestic logistics in Vietnam.

the hotel is just next to Japanese street and vincom centre. got lots of Japanese food even at the mid-night. i like the style of the hotel like a library or modern cafe. The traffic condition of some of the tourist spots in vietnam is quite crowded. but the street of this hotel is not very crowded. The staff speaks English very well especially the man who help me check-in at the reception.

We stayed for six nights. Pros: - Excellent location in a tourist area, close to all amenities and shops. - Polite service with excellent English. - Daily towel changes, room cleaning, water, and toiletries. - Great cafe right outside on the ground floor. - Good breakfast from 7 to 10 AM, but the later you go, the less selection there is. - Air conditioning works perfectly. - Real plants with drip irrigation – very nice. - At first glance, a cozy room with a balcony. Cons: - Due to the plants on the balcony, tiny bugs constantly crawl around the room, bed, and bathroom. They are harmless, like specks of sand, but caused a slight discomfort. - The bathroom wasn't the cleanest due to humidity and old renovations. It was always cleaned, but it looked old and musty. - Not all drinks were refilled daily, contrary to what some reviews mentioned. Initially, there was beer, Pepsi, tea, and water. - Poor soundproofing; noises from the corridor and the neighboring room were audible. - And most importantly – street noise. A closed balcony didn't help; there was noise on the street until midnight and starting at 9 AM. Sports broadcasts, hawkers, construction from neighboring buildings – everything was audible, as if you were right on the street. Since our balcony faced the street, we experienced this; perhaps there are other room options with windows facing inwards. Overall, the hotel isn't bad for its price and genuinely tries to be good, but the longer we stayed, the more downsides we noticed. We wish them continued improvement!
