What Is an eSIM and Why Do You Need One for Malaysia?

An eSIM — short for embedded SIM — is a tiny chip built directly into your phone that replaces the physical plastic SIM card. Instead of swapping cards when you travel, you download a digital profile onto your device and activate it with a few taps. It works exactly like a regular SIM for data, calls, and SMS, but everything happens digitally.

You need one for Malaysia because it solves the two biggest travel connectivity headaches: waiting in line at the airport and fumbling with tiny SIM cards. With an eSIM, you buy your plan before your trip, scan a QR code when you're ready, and walk off the plane already connected. Malaysia has excellent 4G and 5G coverage in all major cities — Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, Johor Bahru — and eSIMs tap into the same local networks as physical cards, so you get fast speeds at a fraction of what international roaming costs.

Is My Phone Compatible with Malaysia eSIM?

How to Check If Your Device Supports Malaysia eSIM

Most phones released after 2018 support eSIM, but there are exceptions — especially certain regional variants from China and some budget Android models. The easiest way to confirm is to check your device settings directly.

How to Check eSIM Compatibility on iPhone

Go to Settings > General > About and scroll down. If you see two IMEI numbers (one for your physical SIM, one for the digital eSIM), your iPhone supports eSIM. Every iPhone from XS, XS Max, and XR onward works, including all iPhone 11 through iPhone 16 models. The only exception is iPhones purchased in mainland China, which typically don't have eSIM capability.

How to Check eSIM Compatibility on Android

The path varies slightly by brand, but the principle is the same:

  • Samsung: Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager. If you see "Add eSIM" as an option, your phone is compatible.
  • Google Pixel: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs. Look for "Add eSIM" or "Download a SIM instead."
  • Other brands (Xiaomi, Oppo, etc.): Check Settings > Mobile Network for options like "Add eSIM" or "eSIM management."

You can also dial *#06# on your phone keypad. If a 32-digit EID number appears alongside your IMEI, your device supports eSIM.

How to Choose the Best Malaysia eSIM Plan for Your Trip

How to Choose the Best Malaysia eSIM Plan for Your Trip

Picking the right plan comes down to three things: how long you're staying, how much data you actually use, and whether you need extras like a local number.

For a typical 5–7 day tourist trip — using Google Maps, Grab, social media, and some photo uploads — 1GB per day is usually enough. If you stream videos, tether to a laptop, or use video calls a lot, go for 2GB per day or an unlimited plan. Longer stays (2 weeks or more) often get better value from bulk data plans rather than daily allowance ones.

Also check which network the eSIM runs on. Maxis generally has the best 5G speeds and widest coverage, including in more remote areas like Langkawi and parts of Borneo. CelcomDigi is solid in cities and slightly cheaper. U Mobile works well in KL and major urban areas but can be spotty outside population centers.

How to Set Up Your Malaysia eSIM

How to Set Up Your Malaysia eSIM

The whole process takes about 5 minutes and follows four simple steps:

  1. Check compatibility first — Confirm your phone supports eSIM using the methods above. There's no point buying a plan if your device can't use it.
  2. Choose and purchase your plan online — Pick a provider (Trip.com, etc.), select the data amount and duration that fits your trip, and pay with a credit card or digital wallet.
  3. Receive your QR code or install via app — After purchase, you'll get a QR code by email, or if you're using the Trip.com app on a newer phone, you can install the eSIM directly inside the app without scanning anything.
  4. Activate when you land — Most eSIMs don't activate until they connect to a local network, so you can install the profile days before your trip and it will only start counting when you arrive in Malaysia.

How to Activate Malaysia eSIM on Your Phone

How to Activate Malaysia eSIM on Your Phone

iOS Activation Steps

  1. Open your Camera app and point it at the QR code you received.
  2. When the "Cellular Plan Detected" notification pops up, tap it.
  3. Tap Continue at the bottom of the screen, then tap Add Cellular Plan.
  4. Label the plan (e.g., "Malaysia Data") so you can tell it apart from your home SIM.
  5. Choose which line to use for data — select your new Malaysia eSIM as the default for cellular data.
  6. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line in Settings > Cellular > [your Malaysia plan] > Data Roaming.
  7. When you land in Malaysia, the eSIM will connect automatically.

Android Activation Steps

  1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet (or "Connections" on Samsung).
  2. Tap Mobile Network or SIM Manager, then select Add eSIM or "Add mobile plan."
  3. Choose Scan QR code and point your camera at the QR code from your provider.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the eSIM profile.
  5. Once installed, set the new eSIM as your default data SIM.
  6. Enable Data Roaming for that SIM — this is required for eSIMs to work in a foreign country.
  7. Restart your phone if the network doesn't connect right away after landing.

Benefits of Malaysia eSIM vs Physical SIM vs Data Roaming

Benefits of Malaysia eSIM vs Physical SIM vs Data Roaming

Malaysia eSIM Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Instant setup before you travel, no physical card to lose, dual-SIM capability (keep your home number active), often cheaper than roaming, plans from multiple countries in one app
  • Cons: Not all phones support it, can be tricky to troubleshoot if something goes wrong, some budget plans have speed caps

Malaysia Physical SIM Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Works on every phone, easy to buy at any convenience store or airport, simple to understand
  • Cons: You have to find a shop and wait in line, you need to physically swap cards (losing your home number in the process), tiny cards are easy to lose or damage

Malaysia Data Roaming Pros and Cons

  • Pros: Zero setup — just turn it on and go, keeps your home number active
  • Cons: Expensive (often $10–15 per day or more), speeds are frequently throttled to 3G, bill shock risk since charges show up later

For most travelers visiting Malaysia, eSIM is the clear winner on convenience and cost. You walk off the plane connected, you keep your home number for incoming calls and SMS, and you pay local-network prices instead of roaming rates.

Must-Have Apps for Foreign Tourists in Malaysia

Must-Have Apps for Foreign Tourists in Malaysia
  • Grab — The single most important app. It's your ride-hailing, food delivery, grocery delivery, and payment app all in one. Taxis in Malaysia are unreliable and often overcharge tourists; Grab gives you fixed, transparent pricing.
  • Touch 'n Go eWallet — Many shops, food courts, and even highway tolls use this. You'll need a Malaysian phone number to register fully, which is where an eSIM with a local number (like eSIM4) comes in handy.
  • Google Maps — Essential for navigation. Download offline maps for areas like Langkawi or national parks where coverage can be patchy.
  • Google Translate — Most people in tourist areas speak English, but the camera translation feature is useful for reading Malay signs and food menus. Download the offline Malay pack before you go.
  • Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) — Mandatory online registration for most foreign visitors. Complete it within 3 days before arrival using your passport details.
  • Waze — Better than Google Maps for real-time traffic in KL and Penang. Useful if you're renting a car or driving.

Where to Buy Malaysia eSIM: Online or Offline?

Where to Buy Malaysia eSIM: Online or Offline?

Where to Buy Malaysia eSIM: Online or Offline?

Online (Recommended)

Buying your eSIM online before your trip is the easiest and usually cheapest option. You can compare all providers side by side, pick exactly the plan you want, and install it on your phone before you leave home. No airport lines, no language barriers, no stress. You can buy directly from provider websites or through travel platforms like Trip.com, which often bundles eSIM with flight or hotel bookings for extra discounts.

Offline

You can also buy physical SIM cards offline in Malaysia — at the airport, in malls, at convenience stores like 7-Eleven, or at official telco shops (Maxis, CelcomDigi, U Mobile). KLIA and KLIA2 both have 24-hour SIM counters in the arrival hall. The upside is you get help with setup from staff. The downsides: airport prices are often 10–20% higher than city shops, you'll need your passport for registration (required by Malaysian law), and you're stuck with whatever plans that specific store has in stock.

If your phone supports eSIM, buy online. If it doesn't, grab a physical SIM at the airport — it's still way better than roaming.

A historic gem in the heart of Bukit Bintang I’ve always admired this stunning building whenever I passed through Bukit Bintang and finally had the chance to stay for a night. Pros: Location: Super convenient as it’s within walking distance to Pavilion Mall. Parking: Guests can park for a reasonable flat rate of RM 5. Atmosphere: The building architecture is beautiful, and the lobby is truly grand and impressive. Pool: The swimming pool is large and was one of my favorite parts of the stay. Cons/Points to Note: Aging: As it’s an older hotel, you can definitely see some signs of age that are hard to hide. Pool Hours: The pool is only open from 8 AM to 8 PM, which is a bit disappointing compared to other hotels that stay open until 10 or 11 PM. Breakfast: The breakfast buffet didn't quite meet my expectations, though it wasn't bad.

Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night before heading to Malacca, and we truly wished we could have stayed a few more days. We booked a Deluxe Two-Bedroom Apartment with a kitchen at a very reasonable price. It provided plenty of space for our family of four, making it a comfortable choice for travelling with two children. One thing we absolutely have to mention is the bedroom. The room was wonderfully dark at night, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. We all had a fantastic night's sleep, which is exactly what every parent needs while travelling! The rooftop infinity pool was another highlight of our stay. The view was absolutely stunning. Although it was a little crowded at times, it was still a very enjoyable experience. We would definitely consider staying here again on our next visit to Kuala Lumpur.

We had an excellent stay at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur. From the moment we arrived, the hotel offered a perfect blend of comfort and luxury. The rooms were beautifully designed, spacious, and exceptionally comfortable, making it easy to relax after a day of exploring the city. The facilities were outstanding, and the overall atmosphere felt modern, elegant, and welcoming. One of the highlights of our stay was the food. The breakfast and dining options were excellent, with a wide variety of delicious dishes and high-quality ingredients. The location is also fantastic, with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and the main attractions in Bukit Bintang. We would highly recommend PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur to anyone looking for a luxurious and comfortable stay with amazing food and excellent service.

The hotel Pacific Express Central Market prime position is its biggest selling point—it is perfectly situated within close proximity to Pasar Seni and Masjid Jamek LRT, and it so near Central Market(walking distance less than a mins. To petaling street(china town) 10mins When it comes to dining, there is absolutely no need to worry at all, even if you’re not a particularly picky eater. The area surrounding hotel is teeming with a diverse array of food stores, local eateries and cozy restaurants, offering an extensive selection of delicious cuisines to suit all tastes, you’ll find plenty of wonderful dining options just a short walk away. Overall my stay at Pacific Express Hotel Central Market was perfect.(except the water heater is not function well, water flow hot for a while then cold again rm8521), other than that the room is spacious, with small refrigerator, nothing to compare with such nice room and reasonable price. The unrivaled location, convenient dining choices combine to create a truly wonderful living experience. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kuala Lumpur, and I will definitely choose to stay here again. Room is perfect clean, with a large lobby, good security. Must try!

The best part of this hotel is definitely the rooftop pool. The panoramic view of Kuala Lumpur from above is beautiful, especially during sunset and at night. It’s the highlight of the stay. The hotel is also about a 10-minute walk from public transport, making it fairly convenient for getting around the city. Unfortunately, the hotel is starting to show its age and is in need of renovation. The elevator situation was also disappointing. There are three elevators, but only two were operating during our stay, and they were very slow. We spent a lot of time waiting, especially during peak hours. The front desk staff were quiet but helpful whenever we needed assistance. However, the security staff at the entrance could be much more attentive. They mostly stood by the door without greeting guests or offering to help with luggage. For a Hilton-branded hotel, I expected a warmer welcome and more proactive service. Overall, I feel the management needs to improve the guest experience. While the rooftop view is fantastic, the lack of attention to service, aging facilities, and slow elevators do not meet the standard I would expect from a Hilton brand.

Hotel Review Location: Excellent—just across the road from Kampung Baru food area, very convenient for foodies. Check-in: Allowed early check-in at 1:30 PM despite 3 PM standard time due to room availability. Much appreciated. Staff: Special mention to the staff member resembling celebrity singer Hafiz—excellent service, kept everything smooth and entertaining. Kudos. Room (1619): Connecting room arrangement was inconvenient; needed to prop the door open (1619,1620) TV in father's room not functioning (1618) Major issue: Strong sewage smell in bathroom—disturbing and needs immediate attention Toiletries: Initially not refilled—no lotion, body wash in my room; no shower gel or conditioner in dad's room. Staff replaced with hand-packed amenities. Appreciated the gesture. Food & Dining: Breakfast buffet: RM37.10—excellent value; surprisingly good nasi goreng (first time I enjoyed it) In-room dining: Nasi Goreng Tamu was good, but sambal prawn was too sweet Hotel breakfast preferred over outside options—area dominated by nasi padang, which isn't to our taste Overall: Okay stay. Responsive service on toiletries and excellent staff, but bathroom odor and room setup issues need fixing.

Booked this hotel for a trip to Kuala Lumpur with my mom, and it was a very satisfying stay! Service: When we checked in, the staff member proactively helped us carry our luggage to the room, which was very thoughtful and welcoming. The front desk also specially arranged a twin room for us. The check-in process, which required English, went smoothly. Hygiene: The room was clean and tidy, and housekeeping did a great job cleaning every day, even folding our clothes. Facilities: My mom particularly loved this hotel because it provided plenty of hangers, which made it easy for us to dry our washed clothes. All other facilities were also well-equipped, and the air conditioning system was very convenient. Environment: From our room, we could see the KL Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers, and the night view was absolutely beautiful. The hotel is located right next to the bustling Pavilion Kuala Lumpur mall, and also near the popular McDonald's landmark. It’s convenient for getting around, dining, and drinking, and the area is very lively at night, being close to the Bukit Bintang monorail and MRT stations.

Here’s your full review combined and polished: The hotel is conveniently located near the city centre, making it easy to get a taxi or Grab to KLCC. Whether you’re visiting for a holiday or a business trip, the location works well. Right next to the hotel, there’s a 7-Eleven and a shopping mall, so getting food and daily essentials is very convenient. For the price per night, the room is incredibly good value. It’s spacious, clean, and suitable for families too. The lobby looks great, and overall the stay feels very worthwhile for what you pay. The room was clean and comfortable, and the location is excellent with direct access to Sunway Putra Mall. However, breakfast for my children was not included and required additional payment. The swimming pool could also be better maintained. The biggest issue was the bathroom drainage. Water did not flow properly to the drain, leaving the floor constantly wet and slippery. Unfortunately, my son slipped and fell because of this. Parking was another disappointment. Guests are charged RM13 per day, which cost us RM39 for a 3-day stay. Complimentary parking for long-stay guests would be appreciated. Overall, a pleasant stay with a great location, but improvements are needed in bathroom safety, parking policy, and family-friendly breakfast options.

The room size was more than adequate and it was quiet. It's located at the very end of the alley behind the Shangri-La. There's a small 7-Eleven downstairs. When we first got to our triple room, the duvet felt a bit damp, so we asked to switch rooms and they happily accommodated us. TLDR: Ceylonz is a great hotel, but the provider (Five Senses) is not. Book a different provider if you want to stay at Ceylonz. (Trip.com does not let me post videos, refer to the pictures below) Initial room conditions: When we first entered the room we encountered these things: - Leftover jacket from the previous guest(?) - stains on the chairs - water stains on the wardrobe - dead ants in the wardrobe - a flickering light Service: Because we chose to stay for 7 nights, we had a 1 free make-up room offered to us which we appreciated. However when we flagged up the issues we found on the first day, they gave us a make-up room on the second day and consumed our free make-up room without our choice. We wanted to use it in the middle of the trip like the 4th day. Because of this we had no toilet paper, tissue box was empty, towels were not replaced. After the 2nd day, they no longer replied to our texts when we enquired about using the sports lounge, requesting a makeup room, getting more toilet paper. Very bad service. After their make-up room, they removed the jacket and cleaned the seat stains, but they did not fix the light or clean the dead ants in the wardrobe. We understand fixing a light might not be possible but the ants were easily removable and we did it ourselves after they left. It felt like they were cutting corners as they also did not replace our tissue box, clean the dead ants or clean the water stains on the wardrobe. Ceylonz: The hotel comes with - nice pool, - 2 gym rooms with great views, - a minimart at the ground floor, - amazing location, walking distance from Bukit Bintang's Pavilion Room: - the amenities provided are not the same for every room, the last time we came there was a water dispenser and pull-out kitchen, this time there isn't (same five senses at ceylonz, same room type) - spacious - tall ceiling - well equipped - bay window - the walls are relatively soundproof so you cannot hear other rooms but the door is not and the hallway is very audible from inside the room, we can hear people chatting, checking in, pulling luggages Bed: - not soft, hard bed with springs - pillows and blanket is okay - uncomfortable bed We would have given this place a glowing review if they: - Stuck to their 1 complimentary makeup room offered - service: replied to our enquiries at all after the 2nd day - better room cleanliness/make-up room diligence: cleaned the dead ants and the water stains on the wardrobe

The room was also impeccably clean and tidy – a big shout-out to the cleaning staff! I'll definitely try to choose Four Seasons for my future travels.

The room was clean and comfortable but the temperature control was unsatisfactory. Despite multiple attempts to adjust it, the room remained at an uncomfortably warm, room temperature. While the breakfast selection itself was adequate, the 40-minute wait to be seated was unacceptable and reflects poor crowd management. Furthermore, scheduling the café’s renovation from 1st to 5th May was a poor decision. Doing so during a long weekend and rain rave festive period significantly impacted guest experience and contributed to the delays.

Booked two rooms, stayed four nights. The rooms look rather dated and do not seem to be refurbished. We checked in late at night around 10ish pm, and not long after checking in, there were problems with one of the rooms, and we requested a change of room. Not sure if the hotel was really full, as we were only given a new room a good 15-18 hours the following day, presumably after guests checked out. As one member in my group was sick (almost warded at the hospital), I spent a HIGHLY uncomfortable 18 hours in the room with the sick member. We really badly needed a comfortable room, but were stuck in one with a pretty bad issue. The manager, Mr Adari, who checked me in the first night, attempted to rectify the situation by offering a late check-out option and access to their lounge. Additionally, a fruit plate was provided in the room we were moved to. The new room also faced the twin towers. While I appreciate the recovery efforts, I feel that the hotel fell short of the comfort and standards the Shangri-la brand provides. Would I book this hotel again the next time I visit - probably not.

This was our second time choosing The Ritz-Carlton for a special occasion, and once again, it did not disappoint. This visit was to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The last time we stayed here was for my birthday, and I still remember how exceptional the service and overall experience were. Because of that wonderful memory, we decided to return. Prior to our arrival, I had only requested a small birthday cake for my husband. To our surprise, the hotel went far beyond our expectations. When we entered the room, we found beautiful balloon decorations, adorable towel art, a thoughtful birthday card, a delicious chocolate cake, and rose petals elegantly arranged around the room. We were both genuinely touched and grateful for the effort and care put in by the team. These thoughtful details made the celebration even more memorable, and we took plenty of photos to cherish the wonderful memories created during our stay. The hotel is also very well located in the heart of the city. A connected bridge from Level 1 provides easy access to Bukit Bintang within just a few minutes’ walk. Having stayed at several nearby hotels before, I can confidently say that The Ritz-Carlton remains our preferred choice. The location is convenient, the service is outstanding, and the room cleanliness is consistently excellent. Thank you to the entire team for making our stay so special and memorable. We truly appreciate the warm hospitality and attention to detail. We will definitely be back again for our next celebration.

The location is fantastic, right on Bukit Bintang Street. The subway and monorail are nearby, making it super convenient to get anywhere. It gets really lively at night. There's a mall just 50 meters away with tons of food options and all sorts of brand-name stores. The hotel itself is very clean, and the staff are friendly and helpful. However, the curtains in my room were a bit odd; the blackout curtain was on the outside, and the sheer curtain was on the inside. So, to block out the light, you had to open the sheer curtain first. It really should be the other way around. Also, my room was incredibly cold. I called them to fix it, and even after setting the thermostat to 30 degrees, it was still a bit chilly, though much better than before. The lights in my room were controlled by a remote-like device on the wall (see picture) instead of a traditional switch. The problem is, if you wake up at night, it's easy to press the wrong button. On the bright side, the pool water was very clean. Overall, I'm quite satisfied. If I visit Kuala Lumpur again, I would definitely stay at this hotel.

Service: There's a front desk, making check-in and check-out very convenient. Environment: It's 400 meters from the subway station, a 15-minute walk to Pavilion KL, and other attractions are also nearby. Facilities: The hotel doesn't provide disposable toiletries or slippers, but it does have a washing machine. Hygiene: The hygiene is quite poor. The bathroom had a strange smell, and there were especially many cockroaches, countless cockroaches.

The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic, very close to both the Petronas Twin Towers and Pavilion Mall. It rained on our second day, but the hotel has a skybridge directly connected to the mall, so we didn't even need an umbrella! The breakfast and bars are also excellent, especially the rooftop bar. You get a direct view of the Twin Towers, and the visual effect is stunning. There's a handsome Malaysian waiter named Yugesh at the bar who recommended several super delicious cocktails to us, and they were all great value for money. On the day we left, I accidentally knocked over a shower gel bottle while rushing to check out. When we checked out, the two handsome guys at the front desk kept asking if we were hurt and said not to worry about the bottle. It really warmed my heart – the service at a five-star hotel truly is a cut above the rest! 👍👍

Flora by Crossroads Hotel is in a very good and convenient location, which makes it easy for travelers who are always on the go. However, the room cleanliness could be improved. The tiles had visible mold, the bed sheets had stains, and the window did not appear to be properly cleaned. On a positive note, the receptionist was very nice, respectful, and accommodating. Overall, if you are traveling, spending most of your time outside, and simply need a place to store your belongings and rest for a while, this hotel can still be a practical option.
