What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

A Hong Kong eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card that is embedded directly into your smartphone, allowing you to activate a cellular data plan without needing to insert a plastic card. It works by downloading a carrier profile via a QR code or an app, which then enables your phone to connect to local networks in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong eSIM is particularly useful for travelers as it allows for immediate connectivity upon arrival and the ability to maintain multiple data plans on a single device. For those visiting mainland China, a Hong Kong-based eSIM often provides the added benefit of accessing international websites and apps that are otherwise restricted.

How to Use and Set Up a Hong Kong eSIM

Following these steps ensures your device is ready and your data is active before you leave the airport.

Step 1: Where to Buy

You can purchase a Hong Kong eSIM directly from the Trip.com website or mobile app. Buying in advance allows you to receive the activation details via email or within the app immediately.

Check whether your smartphone is compatible

Step 2: Check Device Compatibility

Before purchasing, dial *#06# on your phone to see if an "EID" number is listed; if it is, your phone likely supports eSIM. Alternatively, check your settings under "About Phone" to confirm eSIM functionality is present.

Choose Your Hong Kong eSIM Plan

Step 3: Choose Your Plan

Select a plan on Trip.com that matches your duration and data needs. If you plan to visit the mainland, ensure the plan explicitly mentions "Mainland China and Macau" coverage.

 Get Your QR Code

Step 4: Install via Trip.com App

Open the Trip.com app and go to your "Bookings" section to find your eSIM order. Follow the prompts to "Install eSIM," which will automatically configure the settings on your phone without needing a QR code.

 Install eSIM

Step 5: Activate and Turn on Data Roaming

Once you arrive in Hong Kong, go to your phone's Cellular/Mobile Data settings and select the eSIM as your primary data line. You must turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM to connect to the local network and start working.

This is the third time I've purchased an airport express ticket through the Trip app, and it's still as good as ever. This time, I got a buy-one-get-one-free promotion, which was half the price of buying it on-site. It was a fantastic experience and a great price. I could take the bus directly to the airport without exchanging tickets, and it only took 20 minutes. I will definitely buy tickets through the Trip app again in the future!

This is my first time ordering a Hong Kong Octopus card from this website. The process was quick and easy. After arriving at Hong Kong Airport and clearing immigration, I scanned the code at Hall A13 to pick up the card! Everything went very smoothly. I will definitely recommend this to my friends next time.

Can I Access Western Apps in China with HK eSIM

One of the primary reasons travelers choose a Hong Kong eSIM for regional travel is its behavior in Mainland China.

  • Bypassing Restrictions: Because the data is routed through Hong Kong servers, you can typically access apps like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp while in Mainland China without needing a VPN.
  • Convenience: This allows you to stay connected to your usual communication tools and maps while traveling between Hong Kong and cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM
  • Verify the Data Cap: Check if the plan is "Unlimited" or has a high-speed cap (e.g., 1GB per day) followed by slower speeds.
  • Check Expiry: Some eSIMs must be activated within 30 days of purchase; do not buy too far in advance.
  • Local Number Requirement: Some HK eSIMs are data-only. If you need to make local calls or book restaurants, ensure the plan includes a Hong Kong (+852) phone number.

Disclaimer: Network speeds and coverage are subject to local conditions and device capabilities. Availability of specific apps in Mainland China via eSIM is based on current roaming protocols and may change based on local regulations. I stay at this hotel almost every month, but this time was definitely one of my worst experiences. Issue 1: The key card system for the elevators and room doors is a problem. The elevator card reader often doesn't work, and I usually have to try opening my room door three to five times or more. This system is ancient and really needs an upgrade. Issue 2: While dining in the executive lounge, I found insects. The staff's handling of the situation was unprofessional and inadequate, making me feel disrespected. Truly a poor stay.

The location is great, just across the street from Victoria Harbour. There are actually many hotels in this area. From the airport, I took the A21 bus and it was about a 5-minute walk to the hotel after getting off. Just note that the main entrance of the hotel isn't where the bakery is; it's on a smaller, less obvious street. The room had a small view of Victoria Harbour from the window. The room size was adequate. The facilities aren't brand new, but they are still quite functional, for example, there's a universal adapter and USB charging cables. During the summer holiday, the price was fairly reasonable, just over 1000 [currency unit] when I booked it. However, when I checked again on the same day, there were rooms for just over 800. If it were at that price, it would be really good value for money. It's not far from the Avenue of Stars or the Star Ferry Pier, and there are plenty of dining options nearby as well.

Right across from Langham Place, directly accessible from the MTR station exit. The hotel lobby is just across the road. The location is truly authentic; you can wander around downstairs, and everything within a few kilometers feels familiar, giving off that old Hong Kong vibe. The main thing is the excellent location and great service. Next time I visit Hong Kong, this will definitely be my first choice again.

We booked a family room, and for Hong Kong, the room was really spacious. The two queen-sized beds were large and comfortable, the bedding was clean, and the bathroom was spotless. The hotel is located inside a mall. It's just a short walk from the MTR exit – turn right, and you'll find the hotel's back entrance. Step out the front entrance, and the bus stop is not far away. Dining, shopping, and a supermarket are all conveniently located in one spot. The Man Wah Restaurant next door had good food that our child enjoyed. Unfortunately, it rained for several days, so we didn't get to experience the outdoor swimming pool.

The hotel's location is excellent, making shopping and getting around incredibly convenient. The A11 airport bus goes directly to and from the airport. The front desk staff are efficient and quick to address guests' needs. I stayed for 4 nights, and the hotel's breakfast buffet was pretty much the same every day. I'd suggest varying the options a bit daily! The hotel is a bit older, so the facilities are slightly dated, but the room was spacious enough for 2-3 suitcases, which is a rare find in crowded Hong Kong. Definitely recommended!

This time, I was given a room on the top floor. The air conditioning was quite noisy, and the soundproofing wasn't great. If you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend bringing earplugs. They don't provide toothbrushes, toothpaste, or combs, so you'll need to bring your own. The location is super convenient, just a short walk from Jordan Station Exit D. You can also easily walk to Donki and Victoria Harbour from the hotel. I often choose to stay here when I'm in town for concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum or to visit the Xiqu Centre in West Kowloon, as it's all within walking distance.

Hygiene: The bed sheets and duvet covers didn't seem to have been changed, as there were a few strands of hair on the pillow, and more hair was found when I pulled back the duvet at the foot of the bed. After the sheets were changed, my skin felt itchy when I slept at night. Service: The service was alright. They were cooperative when I asked for new sheets, trash removal, and extra tissues. Environment: The hotel's location is quite central, making it convenient to get around. Facilities: The facilities are a bit old, but that's understandable for Hong Kong. I just hope the hygiene conditions can be improved.

I arrived at the hotel around 12 PM, and I initially just wanted to drop off my luggage and check in after lunch. To my surprise, the hotel allowed me to check in early and even upgraded me to a newly renovated, spacious suite! It was on the 22nd floor, which is the top floor, so you had to take the elevator to the 21st floor and walk a short distance. Also, being on the top floor meant there was quite a bit of machine noise, which only really faded after 11 PM. I paid a HKD 1000 deposit upon check-in. The room itself was exceptionally large, with a big shower and a huge living area. The location in Tsim Sha Tsui is incredibly convenient; there are restaurants downstairs, and it's easy to catch a taxi or bus. I would definitely stay here again, but I'd probably avoid a top-floor room next time, as the noise could affect my sleep.

The room was clean and spacious for Hong Kong. One thing that really made it inconvenient were the elevators, perhaps I checked in at the wrong time, but with almost everyone carrying luggage the elevators were always full and it took some waiting to get on. There is a 7-11 right across, many food spots at walking distance and the MTR station is also in the vicinity. As for the view, I booked the harbour view room, but honestly couldn’t see the harbour much (maybe a higher floor would be better, I was on the 20th).

The room was indeed spacious: the wet and dry areas were separate, and there was a sofa, a desk, and plenty of hangers. The breakfast on the first floor offered a good variety, and the restaurant environment was also quite pleasant. The only inconvenience was that the laundry room required tokens which had to be exchanged at the front desk. It would be helpful if this information was provided during check-in or available in the room, saving guests an extra trip to the front desk.

Our stay at The Emperor Hotel Causeway Bay in Hong Kong was absolutely fantastic! As soon as my daughter walked in, she said she loved it. I immediately started taking photos and posted on social media about how wonderful and elegant this hotel is. We were on the 29th floor, and the large window offered stunning views of Victoria Harbour. The ceilings are high, and they provided toothbrushes, soap, coffee, and tea. On the second day, we even received a complimentary bottle of mineral water. The front desk also offers free tea, coffee, and newspapers. This hotel completely shattered my preconceptions about Hong Kong accommodation being expensive and small. The Tin Hau MTR station is super convenient for getting around. On our last day, when we stored our luggage, they even gave us two Ferrero Rocher chocolates as we left – so polite and incredibly thoughtful! My daughter and I both agreed that we'll definitely stay here again next time we visit Hong Kong! Several parents who saw my Hong Kong trip photos have asked me where we stayed, and I've been recommending The Emperor Hotel Causeway Bay without hesitation! You can really see how much we loved this hotel from my photos!

The hotel room facilities are quite old, but the size is acceptable. The shower water was very hot, though the sink drained too slowly – room 1520 definitely needs a fix. I stayed for 5 nights and only received three bottles of drinking water in total. Honestly, I think they should either not provide any at all, as you can get water at the restaurant during breakfast and afternoon tea, or they should provide enough water daily. It's 2026, which hotel doesn't ensure guests have sufficient drinking water? Improving this would make it perfect, especially since the buffet breakfast and afternoon tea really solved my daily meal challenges with my elderly parents and child, which I was very satisfied with. We barely ate out (firstly, Hong Kong's food doesn't really suit our taste, and secondly, it's sometimes inconvenient to find lunch when you're out exploring; it was great to return to the hotel at 3 PM for a rest and afternoon tea!). Finally, the front desk staff were very friendly and made me feel at home, significantly better than staff at other hotels (I've been to Hong Kong many times, so I have a comparison). It rained every day for our first three days in Hong Kong, and the front desk lent us umbrellas without requiring a deposit.

The hotel was undergoing renovations (the low-rise section) during my stay, which probably explains the good value for money. It didn't affect my daily rest, though. The main issue was the large number of student tour groups during the summer holidays; their comings and goings in the hallways were very noisy, especially in the mornings and evenings. I wonder if staying in the high-rise section would have been better. On the positive side, the service from the front desk, greeters, baggage handlers, and housekeeping staff was excellent. If your priority is convenience and staying within budget, this hotel is an excellent choice. The location is its standout feature, situated just a short walk from the subway station, making commuting around the city incredibly easy. However, keep your expectations managed regarding the property itself. The facilities and room decor are quite old and outdated, showing noticeable signs of wear and tear. HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|24.16km from city centre
Hotel with perfect location (all the nearby 4 / 5 star chains should be jealous) - direct access access to the airport without the shuttle is the main benefit, but which stuck in the last century, amenity-wise - there's a fax line connector, readily available for the travellers carrying fax machine with them on the trips , but hardly a single USB port, which together with the absence of a single international charger port or adapter in the room makes life of the traveller somewhat miserable. Interior and iron/ironing board add up to nostalgic vibes of the prime HK days. Last time I've stayed here good 12 years ago and nothing seems to change since, despite the mentioned renovation. Another small detail: probably, it's the most expensive room service burger I've tried (and I've tried a lot) - yeah, it's an airport hotel, and customers don't have any options, but should the food combine both airport and hotels surchages, that's the question🤣 (burger was good, btw).

This time, I didn't plan ahead. My return trip was suddenly delayed, and I needed to switch hotels last minute, so I just booked one nearby. I was genuinely amazed by this place! For around 1100, the room was incredibly spacious, completely unlike the 'every inch of land is precious' small rooms I always hear about. It had two bathrooms, a huge bed, two TVs, and a large bathtub with a separate shower. The amenities were also super comprehensive, including a universal adapter and complimentary bottled water in the room. I truly recommend room 1042! They also have all the disposable items for children, which you can ask for at the front desk. Highly recommended! It's also quite close to the MTR station. I specifically chose to stay at the Rosewood Hong Kong, a benchmark for luxury hotels in the city, and overall, it met my expectations, with only a minor disappointment regarding the bathrobe. The room layout was spacious and bright, with large floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the complete Victoria Harbour skyline. The daytime scene of blue seas and boats, and the nighttime spectacle of countless city lights, each had their own unique charm. The entire room featured high-quality wood furnishings and plaid soft decor. The walk-in closet offered ample storage, and the dual showers and scenic bathtub were top-notch. Amenities like toiletries, TWG tea sets, and Nespresso coffee machines were thoughtfully provided. The turndown service each evening included an aromatherapy scent and a small snack, showing exceptional attentiveness. Service was consistently excellent throughout my stay. The concierge and butler were friendly, professional, and promptly responded to any requests. Breakfast offered both buffet and à la carte options, with high-quality Hong Kong-style Nissin Demae Itcho, desserts, and fresh fruits. The high-altitude infinity pool directly overlooks the sea; it was quiet and uncrowded, making for a perfectly relaxing swim. Direct access to K11 Musea downstairs made shopping and getting around incredibly convenient. The only minor flaw was the quality of the bathrobes in the room. The fabric felt rather thin, lacking the softness and plushness found in bathrobes at other luxury hotels in the same category. This was a stark contrast to the otherwise exquisite and luxurious amenities in the room. The experience would be even more perfect if the bathrobe material were upgraded. Overall, the minor imperfection doesn't overshadow the many positives. It remains a must-stay hotel for sea views in Hong Kong, and I would definitely choose it again on my next visit.

On a Friday night, most 4-star hotels in Hong Kong are usually around a thousand [HKD], so getting the Regal for about five hundred [HKD] this time was really great value for a short weekend getaway. There are plenty of places to eat and shop nearby, which is super convenient. It's also only about a 30 HKD taxi ride from the MTR station.

My family and I recently enjoyed a local staycation at The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong, and the overall experience was absolutely perfect – it definitely deserves a five-star rating! As local guests, we felt an incredible sense of relaxation, as if we had instantly escaped abroad, far from the city's hustle and bustle. The hotel's location, nestled between mountains and the sea, offers expansive and breathtaking ocean views that are truly refreshing. The cleanliness was impeccable; both our room and the public areas were spotless, which brought great peace of mind, especially traveling with young children. The hotel boasts an impressive array of facilities. The infinity pool is perfect for those Instagram-worthy shots, and the dedicated children's play areas kept our kids thoroughly entertained, making it a true family vacation paradise. The service, however, was the highlight. The staff were friendly, professional, and incredibly attentive to the needs of local families, making us feel genuinely cared for. All in all, to enjoy such a high-quality resort experience without needing to fly is remarkable. Both the hardware and software aspects of this hotel are flawless. It was a delightful family staycation, and we will absolutely be visiting again. Highly recommended for all local families looking for a relaxing getaway!

This is an older hotel, but the facilities have improved somewhat since my last stay. The biggest highlights are still the value for money and its excellent location. It's a ten-minute walk from the subway station, making it convenient to get anywhere. There are also plenty of restaurants and shopping malls nearby. If you don't mind older facilities, it's a very suitable place to stay when traveling.

Tsuen Wan Hong Kong|7.43km from city centre
Panda Hotel, located in the heart of Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong, has recently undergone a full renovation, with all its facilities and amenities upgraded, giving it a brand new look. The hotel offers a wide variety of room types, including deluxe rooms, family rooms, and scenic suites. The rooms feature a modern, minimalist design and spacious layouts, perfect for both business travelers and families. The hotel also boasts a Chinese restaurant on its upper floors, serving authentic Cantonese dim sum and cuisine, ideal for family gatherings or dim sum meet-ups. Additionally, there's a fitness center and other leisure facilities. For added convenience, the hotel provides a shuttle bus service to areas like Tsim Sha Tsui and West Kowloon, making it easier to travel around Hong Kong. Its proximity to Tsuen Wan MTR Station offers a short commute to the airport and major business districts, making it an excellent choice for business trips or short getaways.

Stayed in room 1246, and the overall experience was a mixed bag. The staff were exceptionally warm and friendly—truly above standard—and the service at the Club Lounge was particularly impressive. The lounge’s decor is elegant and sophisticated. As for the dining, the breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktail hours were all satisfying. I especially enjoyed the Club afternoon tea; both the ambiance and the quality of the pastries were excellent. Breakfast, on the other hand, stood out for its wide variety of options. That said, a hardware issue significantly marred the stay. The room’s TV kept shutting off automatically—sometimes after just over 40 minutes of viewing. I called the front desk four times, and technicians came up to inspect and repair it, but the problem was never fully resolved. For a guest staying on the Executive Floor, encountering such a persistent technical fault falls short of what one would expect from a five-star hotel. It was genuinely disappointing.

HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|23.37km from city centre
Facilities: The public areas are beautiful, with a lounge, restaurant, and swimming pool. Aside from the small room and small bed, there are no other issues. Given that land is at a premium in Hong Kong, it's understandable. Hygiene: The room was clean, tidy, and quiet. As a new hotel, there was no musty smell. Environment: I came for the V8 concert, and the hotel is very close to AsiaWorld-Expo. After the concert, I could walk back and rest, which helped ease the fatigue of traveling. Service: The front desk staff member was excellent, very polite, and patiently answered my questions about directions. Five-star rating for him! Transportation: The hotel provides a very convenient free shuttle bus service between the hotel and Hong Kong International Airport (Tung Chung Station MTR exit).

This older hotel offers good value for money and a great location. There are several local restaurants right across the street, and it's convenient for getting to Times Square. The facilities are a bit dated, but the service is decent. However, they only granted a half-hour extension for late check-out. Taking an Uber to the airport from the hotel costs around HK$280.
