What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

A Hong Kong eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card that is embedded directly into your smartphone, allowing you to activate a cellular data plan without needing to insert a plastic card. It works by downloading a carrier profile via a QR code or an app, which then enables your phone to connect to local networks in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong eSIM is particularly useful for travelers as it allows for immediate connectivity upon arrival and the ability to maintain multiple data plans on a single device. For those visiting mainland China, a Hong Kong-based eSIM often provides the added benefit of accessing international websites and apps that are otherwise restricted.

How to Use and Set Up a Hong Kong eSIM

Following these steps ensures your device is ready and your data is active before you leave the airport.

Step 1: Where to Buy

You can purchase a Hong Kong eSIM directly from the Trip.com website or mobile app. Buying in advance allows you to receive the activation details via email or within the app immediately.

Check whether your smartphone is compatible

Step 2: Check Device Compatibility

Before purchasing, dial *#06# on your phone to see if an "EID" number is listed; if it is, your phone likely supports eSIM. Alternatively, check your settings under "About Phone" to confirm eSIM functionality is present.

Choose Your Hong Kong eSIM Plan

Step 3: Choose Your Plan

Select a plan on Trip.com that matches your duration and data needs. If you plan to visit the mainland, ensure the plan explicitly mentions "Mainland China and Macau" coverage.

 Get Your QR Code

Step 4: Install via Trip.com App

Open the Trip.com app and go to your "Bookings" section to find your eSIM order. Follow the prompts to "Install eSIM," which will automatically configure the settings on your phone without needing a QR code.

 Install eSIM

Step 5: Activate and Turn on Data Roaming

Once you arrive in Hong Kong, go to your phone's Cellular/Mobile Data settings and select the eSIM as your primary data line. You must turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM to connect to the local network and start working.

After quitting my job, I flew to Hong Kong to unwind, and the Airport Express was my first breath of free air. No meetings, no messages, just 24 minutes of pure daydreaming and enjoying the scenery; even scanning QR codes felt effortless. I took a deep breath upon arrival—it turns out that without KPIs, even the train ride is smoother.

This is my first time ordering a Hong Kong Octopus card from this website. The process was quick and easy. After arriving at Hong Kong Airport and clearing immigration, I scanned the code at Hall A13 to pick up the card! Everything went very smoothly. I will definitely recommend this to my friends next time.

Can I Access Western Apps in China with HK eSIM

One of the primary reasons travelers choose a Hong Kong eSIM for regional travel is its behavior in Mainland China.

  • Bypassing Restrictions: Because the data is routed through Hong Kong servers, you can typically access apps like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp while in Mainland China without needing a VPN.
  • Convenience: This allows you to stay connected to your usual communication tools and maps while traveling between Hong Kong and cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM
  • Verify the Data Cap: Check if the plan is "Unlimited" or has a high-speed cap (e.g., 1GB per day) followed by slower speeds.
  • Check Expiry: Some eSIMs must be activated within 30 days of purchase; do not buy too far in advance.
  • Local Number Requirement: Some HK eSIMs are data-only. If you need to make local calls or book restaurants, ensure the plan includes a Hong Kong (+852) phone number.

Disclaimer: Network speeds and coverage are subject to local conditions and device capabilities. Availability of specific apps in Mainland China via eSIM is based on current roaming protocols and may change based on local regulations. This is a standard five-star hotel. Although the facilities are a bit old, they are well-maintained. The only downside is that after so many years, the carpet still has a slight odor when you enter the room. We stayed in a family room with three people, and overall it was decent. The location is excellent, but the room rate is still a bit expensive!

The hotel's location is excellent. It's a two-minute walk downstairs to the Avenue of Stars, and you can enjoy the Victoria Harbour views as you stroll along the coast, passing attractions like K11, Harbour City, and the Clock Tower. Both the MTR and ferry are conveniently accessible, and there are many dining options nearby. You can also choose a room with an extra bed. At around 700 yuan during the off-season, it's a top choice.

I chose this hotel for its proximity to the vaccination center, and it turned out to be unexpectedly good. It's clean and fresh, and the service is excellent. The views from the 40th floor are clear and expansive. The executive lounge on the 36th floor offers breakfast from 7-10 AM, afternoon tea from 3-5 PM, and a rich selection of evening snacks from 6-8 PM, all complimentary. It's also very convenient for metro travel and taxis. Excellent value for money!

This was my third stay at this hotel, but unfortunately the experience was quite different from my previous visits. During my three night stay, I had to change rooms four times. The first room did not match the room size I had booked, so I was moved to an accessible room, but there was a noticeable smell coming from the bathroom drain. I was then moved again, only to find that the AC was not working properly. Although these issues were frustrating, I appreciate that the staff took them seriously and arranged room changes promptly each time. Overall, the service was good, but the stay was disappointing compared with my previous experiences.

I visit Hong Kong a few times a year and almost always choose to stay at the Regal Hong Kong Hotel. Its location is great, not far from SOGO, which is convenient for shopping. The staff are also very friendly, and the buffet is good. However, the hotel facilities are a bit old-fashioned, and there's a lot of glass, which affected my sleep. Also, the soundproofing in the rooms isn't great, as I could hear other guests arguing in the middle of the night.

If you're coming from the airport or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge, you can take bus A21 and get off at Sino Centre, then walk to the hotel. I recommend bringing your own toiletries and a travel adapter. It's quite close to Jordan MTR station and about a kilometer from West Kowloon, so you can walk there. The air conditioning is strong, and while the windows in the room don't open, the room size is decent – definitely not as large as mainland rooms, but still acceptable.

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.23km from city centre
We checked in at the hotel and expected the room to feel clean and comfortable. However, we were met by a room that didn't feel very clean. The wallpaper on the looked a bit loose in the seems, color was coming off on the edge of the ceilings and the carpet on the floor had some visible dark spots/stains. The bathroom floor also had dark stains/spots and the shower was pretty hard to operate as it was a bit difficult to turn off. The bathroom sink seemed a little clogged as water ran down very slowly. We also noticed some hairs on the floor of the bedroom that wasn't ours. We were three people sharing a room and it got a little cramped. Two is better to not feel like it's too small. We paid around ~1020 HKD per night for the room which felt a bit expensive considering the condition the room was in. The location was great though and the staff was nice. The hotel is a few minutes walk from the metro and travelling around the city is easy. It is also close to restaurants, shopping and convenience stores. I would recommend staying here if you don't mind your room potentially being a little bit unclean or at least feel that way.

Upon check-in, the front desk informed us that the hotel's upper floors were undergoing renovations, and to let them know if we encountered any issues. Our 4-day stay was pretty good. We were on the 15th floor, and when we left around 10 AM, we barely heard any noise from the room. The room itself was decent, spacious enough to fully open two 28-inch suitcases. The hotel's location is also very convenient; you can get here from the airport by taking bus A21/A22 or the MTR. It's about a 10-minute walk from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station to the hotel. Downstairs, there are plenty of dining options like Lin Heung Tea House, Yung Kee Roast Goose, Chung So Dessert, Wa So Cafe, an egg tart shop, and Haidilao. For shopping, there's Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Don Quijote, 7-11, and Wellcome Supermarket. The street right outside the hotel is Kimberley Road, and our driver told us this area is Hong Kong's 'Korean Street,' so you'll find lots of Korean restaurants around! Alright! #TsimShaTsui #TsimShaTsuiHotel ##GreatValueHotel #TravelBug #YungKeeRoastGoose #LinHeungTeaHouse #WaSoCafe #Hashtag #ChibiMarukoChan – On the first floor of The One shopping mall next to the hotel, there's even a Chibi Maruko-chan birthday celebration event with merchandise for sale!

Arrived on the red eye flight past midnight, to find to my dismay that the hotel had 4 to 5 steps from the pavement where i alighted, to the hotel lobby. Not the best start, I thought. Then the staff who attended to me was also not the most chatty and i was kind of regretting booking the hotel. But all that negativity was dispelled when arrived on the 23rd floor of my room, and was greeted by the spectacular sight of the renowned fragrant harbour in my very spacious room, by HK standards. There was a Nescafe coffee maker, which was kindly topped up daily by the friendly cleaning staff, even though i told them i didnt need room service for my short 2-night stay. Bed was firm and comfy, bathtub was clean and not too deep so no fear of accidental drowning. But the highlight for me, besides the view of the harbour, was the delicious breakfast buffet spread, which had a lot of dim sum components, on top of the usual continental breakfast spread. Kudos to the chefs and staff at the cafe serving the hungry morning crowd! Conveniently located along a street full of fab eateries, but not the nearest to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station (about 7mins walk away).

The hotel is conveniently located near the Sai Ying Pun MTR station, with plenty of shops and restaurants nearby, making it easy for dining and shopping. However, many eateries only accept cash. I booked a high-floor, sea-view king room, and the view was exactly as pictured. The only minor drawback is that the room's soundproofing isn't great; I could clearly hear conversations in the hallway. Overall, it's fine for a solo traveler, but it might feel a bit cramped for two people.

Back in Hong Kong for an exhibition, I also decided to get new glasses. The ALVA Hotel by Royal is still the most convenient choice. It's not far from the Cultural Museum, and you can take the MTR directly to the Art Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui East, so it's easy to catch two exhibitions! Absolutely perfect. Plus, I did some shopping at New Town Plaza in Sha Tin, which has everything you could need! The price is reasonable, and the rooms are quite spacious. This time, I booked a room including breakfast, and it was quite plentiful. I'd recommend it.

The neighborhood felt great! I love the song 'Next Stop, Tin Hau,' so I chose to stay at the Empire Hotel in Tin Hau station this time. And indeed, the vibe was fantastic. The service, just like in Tsim Sha Tsui, was exceptional. It felt personal and down-to-earth. They even gave me a complimentary bottle of water every day, which was a thoughtful touch. Thank you! This is a classic tourist-oriented budget hotel. I stayed here before and didn't need a deposit for one night. The room had a universal adapter (not allowed to be taken). This time, I noticed they also provided wooden toothbrushes and the TV channels were updated (though I still couldn't quite figure them out). For 300-400 yuan, you certainly can't compare the environment and service to a five-star hotel, but it offers good value for money. For a simple one-night stay, it perfectly met my needs. There are convenience stores, supermarkets, cha chaan tengs, and bars nearby, and it's quite close to the city center.

This was my second stay at this hotel. The check-in process took around 15 minutes while waiting for the key cards to be prepared. Upon arrival, I noticed that the hotel no longer provides bottled water and has instead installed a water filtration system in the room, which I found to be a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative. However, I was surprised to find a used dental floss pick next to the water filter station. This raised some concerns about the room's cleanliness standards. I emailed the reservations team to inform them of the issue, but unfortunately did not receive a response. I then went out for the day, expecting the item to be removed during housekeeping service. However, it remained in the same place throughout my stay and was still there when I checked out, suggesting that the area had been overlooked during cleaning. I also noticed a faint lipstick-like stain on the duvet cover. I only discovered it on the second night, and since I was checking out the following day, I did not request a replacement The hotel kindly prepared a birthday cake for me, which was a thoughtful gesture and much appreciated, as always. Overall, I still had a pleasant stay. However, given the room rates and the hotel's 5 stars positioning, I believe greater attention should be paid to housekeeping and cleanliness. While these issues did not significantly affect my stay, they were unexpected and below the standard I would anticipate from a hotel in this category.

I honestly think this hotel offers incredible value for its price. ~Service: The front desk staff were warm, patient, and clearly thought about the guests' needs; there was even someone on duty late at night. The luggage storage attendant was also incredibly kind. I just asked about the hotel shuttle, and he took me out in the pouring rain to catch it. ~Amenities: Some floors have free water dispensers, and on the first floor, there's a complimentary tea room, as well as coin-operated washing machines and dryers. They offer a free hotel shuttle from 10 AM to 6 PM, and umbrellas are available in the lobby – all very convenient. ~Location: The hotel is located at an intersection, just a few steps away from McDonald's, ParknShop supermarket, and 7-Eleven. Across the street, there are various restaurants serving Korean, *********, Chaoshan, Vietnamese, and Singaporean cuisine, all at reasonable prices, usually under 100 HKD. ~Transportation: The hotel shuttle stops at Mong Kok, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Elements Mall at Kowloon Station. The bus has automatic doors, and you just wave to get on at designated spots. The Olympic and Nam Cheong MTR stations are about a ten-minute walk away. There are also bus and mini-bus stops near the hotel, which are very convenient if you know how to use them. For a concert I attended, I took a special bus from Kai Tak to Prince Edward after the show, then transferred to a mini-bus, arriving at the hotel in just 20 minutes.

The shower curtain in the bathroom needs attention to hygiene. It's not a wet/dry separation which isn't ideal for seniors or children. However, for a Hong Kong hotel, the space is quite large, and there's a pool. The beds, though, definitely need an upgrade. All toiletries have to be purchased, which I assume is for environmental reasons or perhaps because they host a lot of tour groups. Overall, the service attitude is pretty good.

The hotel's location is excellent, making it convenient for dining, entertainment, and shopping. The A11 bus to the airport is also not far away. It's just a 5-minute walk to the MTR station. The room was clean, though admittedly not large, but perfectly fine for two people. Considering the area, the price was very reasonable. I'd definitely stay here again.

Thank you very much for your sensitive attitude towards all my requests: changing a room to a higher floor, charging a power bank, checking out later, for the 24-hour service, tea and coffee etc. Everything is clean! Great location: 7/11 on the ground floor, tons of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables around the corner, 5 minutes to the waterfront and park, a pleasant 30-minute walk to Time Square, 3 minutes to the metro, tram, and buses, including the bus to the airport!!! This saves time and money! Hope to comeback! Yulia Matveeva, Russia, Krasnoyarsk city.

The hotel's location is excellent. It's a 2-minute walk to the MTR station and an underground passage from the left side of the lobby. It's also very close to the Avenue of Stars, Tsim Sha Tsui food street, K11, and Harbour City, all within a 10-minute walk. The staff are friendly and the service is very professional. Breakfast is served for a long period with plenty of well-prepared, tasty food. The facilities are well-maintained, and there's ample hot water. The only downside is that the room had a strong, damp and musty smell for all three nights of my stay, which affected my sleep. However, given Hong Kong's geography and climate, and the age of the hotel, this might be an unsolvable issue. Overall, it still deserves a high rating.

Staying here felt uniquely relaxing. It's not the usual stiffness of a business hotel or the looseness of a typical resort; it's more like a gentle embrace, a 'hidden gem in the city.' As you turn off the bustling Nathan Road into the hotel's driveway, the noise instantly fades. The room size is a luxury by Hong Kong Island standards. The enormous floor-to-ceiling windows transform the Victoria Harbour skyline into a living mural. The soft earth tones, velvet and leather accents, and books about Hong Kong on the shelves make it feel as comfortable as a friend's home. The bedding is exquisite, and the lighting is meticulously designed – no harsh glare, just warm, layered illumination. Breakfast is à la carte; I enjoyed eggs Benedict with a sea view. In the evening, I'd head to DarkSide for jazz, where the bartender crafted cocktails based on my mood. If I didn't feel like going downstairs, room service was prompt and excellent. The best part is the direct elevator access to K11 Musea, meaning you can step out and explore art exhibitions or grab a bite at Ichiran Ramen. It's a seamless transition between vibrant city life and tranquility. The sixth floor's Asaya feels more like a lifestyle center, complete with a shallow pool, thermal baths, and meditation spaces. Before a spa treatment, you can choose your preferred essential oils and music, and the therapists are incredibly gentle. Lounging on a chair, gazing at the sea view, time just seemed to stand still.

I'm genuinely shocked by the service these days. I witnessed an incident firsthand: a solo guest was staying at the hotel, and the next day, a 'friend' wanted to join them for the complimentary buffet breakfast. The person at the entrance, checking guests in, noticed it was a solo booking and immediately refused entry to the self-proclaimed 'friend'. The 'friend' turned to leave, but the hotel staff completely ignored us, who were waiting right behind them to check in for breakfast. Instead, they immediately called the front desk, confirmed the guest's information, and then, in front of everyone, used highly inappropriate language, loudly exclaiming, 'I just chased away a clueless *****!' We all heard it clearly. Meanwhile, the man who had left wasn't far from the elevators, heard what was said, and immediately came back, asking, 'What did you just say?' The person on the phone largely ignored him… To be frank, I don't care if that person was trying to get a free buffet breakfast or not, but the staff's handling of the situation was completely out of line. At the very least, they shouldn't have used such disrespectful language for other guests to hear while dealing with this, and their disregard for us waiting to enter – does that mean any guest who turns to leave will be subjected to discriminatory remarks? Speechless.

Really love the scenery here! It's my second time back! The breakfast selection is also quite extensive, and it offers great value for money. Facilities: I really liked the gym! The swimming pool is absolutely amazing on a sunny day. Cleanliness: Hong Kong's major hotels generally have good cleanliness, and this one is no exception. Environment: I love it here. It's great for walks around, and it's easy to get some beautiful photos. Service: The staff were friendly, communication was smooth, and they were very patient.

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay Hong Kong|4.82km from city centre
This hotel in Causeway Bay is a hidden gem when it comes to pricing, even cheaper than many hotels in Shenzhen. It's located near a wet market, so while the streets aren't the cleanest, it's super convenient for grabbing food and essentials. The biggest drawback is the air conditioning – it's incredibly loud, so light sleepers beware. It's a bit of a walk to the MTR station, but public buses are easily accessible. For airport transfers, the bus is more convenient than the MTR; the drop-off point is as shown in the picture, and the pick-up point is about a 10-minute walk from the COFCO Tower.

Tsuen Wan Hong Kong|7.43km from city centre
I only found out after booking that this hotel has a bit of a reputation, apparently for being *******, so I was a bit unnerved staying there at night. The front desk is on the third floor, above a mall, and it seems to be quite a popular place. The air conditioner remote in my room was broken and couldn't be controlled. In the other room, it could be controlled, but it kept resetting to the original temperature, and I couldn't adjust the fan speed either, which blew directly onto the bed. The soundproofing isn't great; there were a lot of excited foreigners, so it was a bit noisy. The service was good, though. However, my room wasn't ready at the 3 PM check-in time, and I had to wait another thirty minutes, which I found unacceptable. It just doesn't make sense to have to check out by 11 AM but then not get your room until 3:30 PM.

The hotel is very close to Harbour City and the subway is super convenient. Plus, there's a direct bus (route 25) to the airport, making transportation a breeze. We were given a room on the lowest floor, so there wasn't much of a view, but being able to check out late at 1 PM was a nice perk. The breakfast spread was extensive, though nothing particularly stood out. However, it was good for getting your fill of vegetables and fruits. The bathroom was almost a wet/dry separation, which was quite practical. The room size isn't small by Hong Kong standards. There was no strange smell in the room, but the duvet felt slightly damp. Overall, it's pretty good value for money.

HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|23.37km from city centre
I chose this hotel for a concert as it's super close to the venue. The room was small but very clean, and perfectly acceptable for a two-night stay. Transportation is very convenient, and they even offer a free shuttle bus to and from the airport and subway station. The hotel breakfast was just so-so, nothing special. If you're planning to go out, I'd recommend skipping breakfast here and eating out instead. All in all, it was a decent stay.

The hotel's location and environment are great, and the service was excellent. A front desk staff member even came up to help me with my door lock. The only downside is that the room's soundproofing is really poor. The people in the next room were talking so loudly, even until two or three in the morning, which made it hard to sleep.

FAQs about Hong Kong eSIM

  • Will a Hong Kong eSIM work on my phone?

It works on eSIM-capable, unlocked devices (many recent iPhones and Android phones). Before buying, confirm your model supports eSIM and that your phone is not carrier-locked. Dual-SIM users can often keep their home number on the primary line while using HK data on the eSIM.
  • What network coverage should I expect in Hong Kong?

Coverage depends on the product’s partner network (listings may mention operators like CSL and features like local IP). Urban areas (Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, major MTR corridors) typically perform well; remote spots, indoors, or peak congestion can still reduce speeds.
  • When should I install and activate the eSIM?

Most products use QR-based setup; some plans start validity from activation, others from first network attachment—always read the product page and voucher instructions. Install in a stable Wi‑Fi environment, and avoid deleting the eSIM profile after activation.
  • Can I hotspot, top up, or cancel Hong Kong eSIM?

Many Hong Kong eSIM listings advertise hotspot support, but limits vary by package. Renewal/top-up depends on the specific product (“Renewable” may appear on some Trip listings). Cancellation/free-change rules are shown on the booking page—check the free cancellation window before purchase.
  • Does a Hong Kong eSIM work in Mainland China?

Yes, if you purchase a "Greater Bay Area" or "China-HK-Macau" specific plan. It allows you to use data in both regions.
  • Do I need a VPN to use Instagram in China with this eSIM?

Usually, no. Most Hong Kong travel eSIMs provide "roaming" data that bypasses local internet restrictions in Mainland China.
