What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

A Hong Kong eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card that is embedded directly into your smartphone, allowing you to activate a cellular data plan without needing to insert a plastic card. It works by downloading a carrier profile via a QR code or an app, which then enables your phone to connect to local networks in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong eSIM is particularly useful for travelers as it allows for immediate connectivity upon arrival and the ability to maintain multiple data plans on a single device. For those visiting mainland China, a Hong Kong-based eSIM often provides the added benefit of accessing international websites and apps that are otherwise restricted.

Popular eSIM Operators in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has several major telecommunications providers that offer robust 5G and 4G coverage. Many plans now include "Greater Bay Area" coverage, which bundles data for Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China.
- CSL / 1O1O: Known for the widest 5G coverage and high speeds across the territory.
- 3 Hong Kong (3HK): Offers very competitive prepaid eSIM packages often used by tourists.
- SmarTone: Popular for stable connections in underground areas like the MTR.
- China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK): Generally provides the best value for cross-border travel between HK and Mainland China.

Hotel in Hong KongHow to Use and Set Up a Hong Kong eSIM
Following these steps ensures your device is ready and your data is active before you leave the airport.
Step 1: Where to Buy
You can purchase a Hong Kong eSIM directly from the Trip.com website or mobile app. Buying in advance allows you to receive the activation details via email or within the app immediately.

Step 2: Check Device Compatibility
Before purchasing, dial *#06# on your phone to see if an "EID" number is listed; if it is, your phone likely supports eSIM. Alternatively, check your settings under "About Phone" to confirm eSIM functionality is present.

Step 3: Choose Your Plan
Select a plan on Trip.com that matches your duration and data needs. If you plan to visit the mainland, ensure the plan explicitly mentions "Mainland China and Macau" coverage.

Step 4: Install via Trip.com App
Open the Trip.com app and go to your "Bookings" section to find your eSIM order. Follow the prompts to "Install eSIM," which will automatically configure the settings on your phone without needing a QR code.

Step 5: Activate and Turn on Data Roaming
Once you arrive in Hong Kong, go to your phone's Cellular/Mobile Data settings and select the eSIM as your primary data line. You must turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM to connect to the local network and start working.

It was a great experience. I managed to snag a buy-one-get-one-free ticket for Trip.com's Hong Kong leg, which averaged out to just HK$50 per trip, cheaper than any other option. It only took 24 minutes to get from Central to the airport, super fast! The experience was excellent. I'll definitely keep an eye out for these flash sales in the future and recommend it to my friends!

I will definitely recommend this to my friends next time.

Can I Access Western Apps in China with HK eSIM
One of the primary reasons travelers choose a Hong Kong eSIM for regional travel is its behavior in Mainland China.
- Bypassing Restrictions: Because the data is routed through Hong Kong servers, you can typically access apps like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp while in Mainland China without needing a VPN.
- Convenience: This allows you to stay connected to your usual communication tools and maps while traveling between Hong Kong and cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou.
Trip.com Hong Kong eSIM Reviews

Reviews on Trip.com generally highlight three main areas:
- Ease of Setup: Users frequently mention that the in-app installation is much simpler than manually scanning QR codes.
- Network Speed: Most reviews note that 5G speeds are consistent in urban areas, though speeds may drop to 4G in remote parts of the New Territories.
- Customer Support: Travelers appreciate the 24/7 support available through the platform if activation issues arise.

Very easy to install and use. The connection was stable and the data speed was good during my trip in China. It was also convenient that ChatGPT and other usual apps could be accessed without any extra setup. Overall, a hassle-free eSIM with good value for money.
Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM

- Verify the Data Cap: Check if the plan is "Unlimited" or has a high-speed cap (e.g., 1GB per day) followed by slower speeds.
- Check Expiry: Some eSIMs must be activated within 30 days of purchase; do not buy too far in advance.
- Local Number Requirement: Some HK eSIMs are data-only. If you need to make local calls or book restaurants, ensure the plan includes a Hong Kong (+852) phone number.
Disclaimer: Network speeds and coverage are subject to local conditions and device capabilities. Availability of specific apps in Mainland China via eSIM is based on current roaming protocols and may change based on local regulations. Check Trip.com for the most current plan details and compatibility lists.

A returning guest here! I'm not sure if it's because of the summer holiday, but it seems like all departments are so busy that some of the hygiene details aren't as good as before. As soon as I entered the room, before I even touched the bed, I found a short hair on the bedsheet (I have long hair, so it couldn't have been mine). Also, later that night, I wanted a drink and ordered some glasses, but they were incredibly dirty, as if they hadn't been washed at all (luckily, I hadn't had a drink yet). I hope these details can be followed up and improved.FromPKR 35,905

The location is excellent, right outside the subway exit. It's just one stop from West Kowloon, and you can walk to Tsim Sha Tsui. Although it's an older hotel, the room facilities are a bit dated, but it's clean and hygienic with an 'old money' vibe. The front desk lady, Polly, upgraded our room for free, which made our stay very comfortable. Later, another front desk staff member in the evening helped us get a late check-out, which was incredibly thoughtful! Plus, I discovered that the nearby parking lot offers overnight parking for only 98! For drivers coming from Guangdong, this hotel is a great option. I'm already planning to drive here next time.FromPKR 27,053

Mong Kok Hong Kong|0.18km from city centre
A few years ago, I visited Hong Kong and stayed at Cordis for the first time, absolutely loving it. This time around, there was no question, I chose Cordis again. It's in a prime Mong Kok location, super convenient for transportation and shopping. The hotel lobby connects directly to Langham Place, and just outside, you'll find SaSa, Mannings, DONKI, and Matsukiyo. Famous local eateries like Fei Jie and 18 Seats Doggy Noodles are also within a 10-minute walk. Langham Place's basement connects to the MTR Tsuen Wan Line, offering direct access to Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui, and Central without any transfers.
The hotel has been open for about ten years or so, and it's generally well-maintained, though of course, it can't compare to a brand new hotel – that's a matter of personal preference. A pleasant surprise this time was finding ice machines in the hallway on our floor. The room facilities are quite comprehensive, though having to stand in the bathtub for a shower is a minor drawback. The bedding is very comfortable, especially the pillows; I slept incredibly well. The front desk staff are all very nice, communicating in Mandarin, offering cold towels, and proactively greeting guests. However, the ground floor staff didn't offer to help with luggage proactively, which was a slight oversight. All in all, if you're looking for ultimate convenience, choosing Cordis is definitely the right decision.FromPKR 38,221

The breakfast was plentiful and catered well to the tastes of travelers from various regions.
The staff members were all very friendly, and the hotel's location is excellent, being a mere ten-minute walk to Victoria Harbour and situated in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.
The bathtub is relatively low, making it easy for seniors to enter, and it's equipped with a non-slip mat and a grab bar on the wall to assist with standing up.
The deposit is one thousand Hong Kong dollars, payable by cash or credit card. If paid in cash, you receive the refund upon check-out; I paid by credit card, and the front desk said it would take 2-4 weeks to process. Nowadays, travelers rarely carry so much cash, and waiting almost a month for a deposit refund is truly inconvenient. I hope this can be improved.
Also, I've seen many reviews stating that no deposit was charged, so I'm unsure what the standard policy is regarding deposit collection.FromPKR 26,556

North Point and Quarry Bay Hong Kong|4.24km from city centre
Overall, the hotel left a good impression. Everything was very clean, the hotel is modern, and the service was good. During our trip, we stayed at about five non-international chain hotels, and almost everywhere, upon our request and if rooms were available, we were given an upgrade.
Unfortunately, at this particular Hyatt, we encountered difficulties with this. We requested a higher floor room as we were very tired from our journey and wanted a quieter room due to street noise. We were denied and only offered a paid upgrade, even though rooms in other categories were available. This was a bit disappointing, especially considering our previous experiences at other Hyatt hotels.
I'd like to specifically mention the pool. We chose this hotel partly because of it, but when we arrived around 9 PM, there were many small children jumping from the sides and splashing vigorously. As a result, instead of a relaxing time after a long day, we felt uncomfortable. In my opinion, the hotel should consider implementing specific hours for families with small children, for example, until 6-8 PM, and make the pool an adult-only zone or for older children (e.g., 14-16 years and up) during later hours.
Also, at the front desk, we wanted to exchange dollars. We were told we could only exchange $50, but the bill was ultimately not accepted, and they also refused to give change from a $100 bill. Perhaps a more convenient currency exchange system for guests should be considered.
Overall, the hotel is good: modern, clean, and comfortable. However, some aspects of the service and pool organization, in my opinion, do not meet the standards one expects from a Hyatt.FromPKR 35,119

The room was as advertised, and the cleaning staff and day staff are very friendly and able to help with any needs. The breakfast was fresh and filling with a good mix of both Chinese and Western foods. The lounge and laundry on the 2nd floor was also pleasant to sit in while waiting for laundry to finish but the dryer is set to very small loads and therefore our clothes did not dry. The only solution is to pay for another round if you have time to spare. There is no clothes line in the room.

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.64km from city centre
For Tsim Sha Tsui, this place is quite affordable, around 800 a night. The room is very small, and the ventilation system is almost non-existent; they provide an air purifier. The bedding is generally damp. It's best to leave one of the two key cards in the room to keep the air conditioning on all day. There are slippers but no dental kit, and all the facilities are quite compact. There's a bathtub, but it's combined with the showerhead. Anyway, that's how accommodation is in Hong Kong: if you want it cheap, the environment won't be great, and if you want spaciousness and a good environment, it will definitely be expensive. The hotel's location is excellent, with direct access to Tsim Sha Tsui East Station and Tsim Sha Tsui Station. You can walk underground to K11 and Harbour City, and Nathan Road is right outside. We were a group of four and booked two rooms for three nights. The hotel assigned us rooms 2409 and 2413. Honestly, the hotel's location is great, very close to the subway station, which makes getting around super convenient. However, room 2413 was never cleaned and was incredibly noisy. We could hear singing, conversations, and even doors opening and closing next door. It was a really poor experience. Picture three shows room 2409, which was fine and cleaned daily. Mong Kok Hong Kong|0.49km from city centre
This hotel is absolutely fantastic! I spent a lot of time choosing among many hotels before my trip, needing something with convenient transportation, twin beds, and a slightly larger room. After careful selection, I landed on Metropark Hotel Mongkok.
The service here is the best I've experienced out of dozens of hotels I've stayed at in Hong Kong. From the front desk during check-in and check-out to the housekeeping staff, everyone made guests feel incredibly welcome and at home. The transportation is also super convenient, with two MTR lines just a few dozen meters' walk away. Nearby, you'll find everything you need: tea restaurants, BBQ places, McDonald's, Sasa, Wellcome, and ParknShop. A few hundred meters further down is the bustling Nathan Road.
The room itself was also spacious enough for three suitcases without a problem. They even provided a universal adapter, a weight scale, and earplugs, which was a great touch.
I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time!FromPKR 17,663

HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|24.16km from city centre
The room's decor and facilities are basically from the 1990s. There's no drinking water provided in the room; you have to get it yourself from a dispenser in the hallway.
On the day I stayed, there was also a pipe repair at the airport. When I checked in, I was told the toilet in my room couldn't flush and would be fixed by 6 PM. However, from the time I got back to my room that evening until I checked out the next morning, the toilet was only flushing with sewage. I was truly disgusted!
I didn't get much sleep that night either. The bed was too soft, and I was itching, I'm not sure if it was from dust mites or bed bugs.
The biggest and only advantage is its location, making it suitable for layovers, early morning flights, or aviation enthusiasts.FromPKR 28,790

Whenever I visit Hong Kong, I always stay at the same place – this one! It's super convenient for transport; I can just hop off the MTR with my luggage and it's a short walk, no need to figure out new routes. Downstairs, there are all sorts of delicious eats, from dim sum for breakfast to late-night snacks, so after a long day of exploring, I can just pop down for a bite. The supermarket next door is handy for grabbing water and fruit, and I can even catch a movie at the cinema in the evenings to relax. My multiple stays here have always been consistently great, it feels as comfortable as coming back to a familiar old haunt. 🏙️FromPKR 14,974

Wan Chai and Causeway Bay Hong Kong|4.35km from city centre
Right next to the International Convention and Exhibition Center. We got a free upgrade from a king-sized room to an executive room, which was great. The location is excellent. One of the rooms had a bit of a smell, and they arranged a room change for us even at midnight, so the service was truly fantastic. However, most rooms don't have a hairdryer, and there are no toothbrushes or toothpaste, but I assume you can ask the front desk if needed. Overall, it was a great stay!FromPKR 13,320

Location is superb. Close by to mtr, tram, and bus. Free water refill and also free coffee for guest whole day. Room is spacious compared to other hotel there and the shower was really nice. Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.59km from city centre
Honestly, this stay was a huge disappointment. I booked a high-end sea-view room at a steep price, but the service felt very perfunctory (was it because I'm a mainland Chinese tourist?). In hindsight, I shouldn't have passed on the Sheraton just because the room was too small, or the Grand Hyatt because of its less-than-ideal location. Even paying double the price for the Peninsula would have been a much happier experience.
As someone who travels frequently for business and leisure, I often stay at similarly-ranked Marriott, Hyatt, Sheraton, Hilton, and Westin hotels. In the past 10 years, whenever I've arrived early and the hotel had an available room, they've always allowed early check-in, and this applies to hotels both in mainland China and abroad. I understand that the 3 PM check-in time is standard contractual practice, but I also believe whether a hotel accommodates early check-in reflects its attitude, especially since with limited transportation options and times, who can guarantee they'll never arrive early? On the day of my arrival, at 1 PM, the weather in Hong Kong was bad with heavy rain expected in the afternoon. I was with my child, and under those circumstances, I had to go out and kill two hours.
Despite clearly indicating that children would be staying, no children's toiletries were prepared in advance, something I've never encountered at any high-end hotel before.
Then, the room key card wouldn't open the door after multiple attempts.
I also requested a high-floor room when booking, but was still assigned a low floor. This trip made me realize that being a Ctrip Gold Diamond member carries little weight at this hotel. If that's the case, why does the platform bother recommending it to people?
In short, I won't be returning. I don't love those who don't love me; why spend money where you're not valued? Perhaps some might say I didn't ask for early check-in? My decade-plus of hotel experience has taught me one thing: I won't ask for anything. If they don't proactively offer it, it reflects the hotel's attitude. And this is the Shangri-La, once lauded as the pinnacle of service!
To be fair, though I'm not a fan of their decor style, the sea view from the room was indeed excellent, and the room itself was quite spacious.FromPKR 64,736

I saw the Black Diamond Wow Privilege and it was my child's birthday, so I thought I'd try the Rosewood Hong Kong, which I've long heard is the best. We stayed for two nights. First, I'd say the check-in experience was quite good. I booked two rooms, one with a Kowloon view and one with a sea view, and requested they be on the same floor in advance. Trip.com customer service followed up, and indeed, we got rooms on the same floor. However, we didn't receive the room upgrade mentioned in the Wow Privilege. We checked in at 4 PM, and the rooms were ready with a handwritten welcome letter and a fruit platter (three oranges) in each. I didn't mention my child's birthday during check-in, so we didn't get a birthday cake on their actual birthday. I feel the attention to detail in service was a bit lacking – a deduction for attentiveness. The hotel front desk also didn't mention the Wow Privilege or the option for a 2-hour late check-out. The staff's service attitude was excellent; they switched seamlessly between English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. Breakfast was semi-buffet style, with some items for self-service and others to order from a menu. Although the variety wasn't extensive, the food was well-prepared and delicious. My only slight disappointment was that the wonton noodles on the first day were amazing, but when I ordered them again on the second day, they were significantly less impressive, with a bland and tasteless broth. The hot waffles were delicious both days 😋. The turndown service every night was excellent, and the room cleaning was very thorough. During our stay, we also tried the spa, pool, and gym, all of which I highly recommend.FromPKR 210,589

Sha Tin Hong Kong|7.52km from city centre
Opted for the Regal Riverside Hotel in Hong Kong again, it's a great value-for-money hotel in the city.
**Location:** Situated right next to Sha Tin town center, with direct airport bus access, making transportation incredibly convenient. There are plenty of beauty stores, convenience stores, supermarkets, and restaurants nearby, offering a wide array of dining options. My room had a stunning view of Shing Mun River, with mountains and water – a picturesque landscape that was absolutely beautiful.
**Facilities:** This time I stayed in a single king-sized bed room. It's much smaller than the twin-bed room I had before, but for a solo traveler staying one night, it was just right. The facilities were quite complete.
**Service:** They offer luggage storage both before check-in and after check-out, which is very helpful. However, check-in is strictly after 3 PM, and early check-in is not permitted, so you need to time your arrival accordingly. The front desk staff speaks Mandarin and English, which is very convenient.
**Cleanliness:** It was very clean, as always.FromPKR 20,476

This was my first stay at the hotel. The room was very comfortable and clean. The bedding was good, and it was quiet enough. However, getting the room took far too long; I didn't get it until 5:30 PM. The air conditioning system stopped working in the morning, and it took 30 minutes for the technician to arrive for repairs, which was a bit slow. The swimming pool was clean. For the main pool, children are required to wear life jackets, which is quite inconvenient for kids who already know how to swim, regardless of their age. Please consider changing this rule. Life jackets should only be required if a parent is not accompanying them.FromPKR 34,085

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.32km from city centre
This was my first trip abroad, and many people had told me that hotel rooms in Hong Kong are particularly small and expensive. I spent a long time searching and filtering options on the platform before my trip. After much deliberation, I booked two rooms with some trepidation: one king-size and one twin-bed room. Even before entering the lobby, I felt a wave of warmth as soon as I stepped out of the taxi. Someone immediately helped me with my luggage, and check-in was quite fast. I didn't even have to carry my own bags; the hotel staff brought them directly to our rooms. The bedding was very comfortable, and even though it was a partial sea view, we could still see the night view of Victoria Harbour, which was absolutely perfect. Just outside the hotel, there's a 7-Eleven and a really delicious egg waffle stall. It's also super convenient for taking the MTR and buses. To anyone still hesitating, go ahead and book it! You definitely won't be disappointed. I'll choose to stay here again on my next trip to Hong Kong!FromPKR 52,037

Located in the Causeway Bay district, it's within walking distance to the main commercial area, making dining and shopping very convenient. First off, the air conditioning in the room wasn't working, which was unbearable given the hot weather. They did help us switch rooms later. The only downside was that the front desk phone was practically impossible to reach; you had to go downstairs yourself to ask anything. Second, the bathroom facilities were a bit old-fashioned, and the bathtub was quite low. Third, regarding transportation, there's an airport shuttle right on the G floor, and downstairs there's a supermarket and restaurants, all very convenient. Getting to the MTR station is easy; you just tap your Octopus card downstairs, and you get a HK$2 discount daily when going to Tai Wo Hau by MTR. The hotel's shuttle service to Tsim Sha Tsui has also been adjusted. Overall, it's still a good value-for-money hotel. I hope the hotel staff's service attitude can improve; that would make it even better.FromPKR 16,587

My stay exceeded expectations! 👍 The location is superb, making it incredibly convenient for shopping and getting around Tsim Sha Tsui. I could easily walk to the Star Ferry and Harbour City. Location: About a 5-minute walk from Wan Chai MTR station, with excellent bus connections, making transportation quite convenient. There are also plenty of dining options nearby.
Service: The front desk and room service staff were very kind and patient during check-in. When I called the front desk from my room for service, there was no discrimination against Mandarin speakers. The complimentary bottled water was a huge plus, especially on such a hot day.
Cleanliness: The interior of the guest room and the hotel lobby were clean and well-maintained. The cleaning staff were also very nice.
Facilities: Oh, the Wi-Fi in the room was a bit elusive with a poor signal. However, the air conditioning was very powerful, and the bedding was fantastic. I had a very comfortable stay in my king-size room.
Overall, for 700 a night, it's an absolute steal at this price point. If you plan on exploring Hong Kong Island extensively and prefer a quiet, hassle-free stay, this is a no-brainer.FromPKR 15,181

HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|23.37km from city centre
Excellent hotel! They offer a shuttle service to and from the airport and Tung Chung MTR station, making it super convenient for shopping at Citygate Outlets. The only minor drawback is the lack of a shuttle to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge port. The room was very clean, and while not huge, it was modern and tidy.
I'd suggest the hotel consider adding a shuttle service to the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge port.FromPKR 18,656
FAQs about Hong Kong eSIM
-
Will a Hong Kong eSIM work on my phone?
It works on eSIM-capable, unlocked devices (many recent iPhones and Android phones). Before buying, confirm your model supports eSIM and that your phone is not carrier-locked. Dual-SIM users can often keep their home number on the primary line while using HK data on the eSIM. -
What network coverage should I expect in Hong Kong?
Coverage depends on the product’s partner network (listings may mention operators like CSL and features like local IP). Urban areas (Hong Kong Island, Kowloon, major MTR corridors) typically perform well; remote spots, indoors, or peak congestion can still reduce speeds. -
When should I install and activate the eSIM?
Most products use QR-based setup; some plans start validity from activation, others from first network attachment—always read the product page and voucher instructions. Install in a stable Wi‑Fi environment, and avoid deleting the eSIM profile after activation. -
Can I hotspot, top up, or cancel Hong Kong eSIM?
Many Hong Kong eSIM listings advertise hotspot support, but limits vary by package. Renewal/top-up depends on the specific product (“Renewable” may appear on some Trip listings). Cancellation/free-change rules are shown on the booking page—check the free cancellation window before purchase. -
Does a Hong Kong eSIM work in Mainland China?
Yes, if you purchase a "Greater Bay Area" or "China-HK-Macau" specific plan. It allows you to use data in both regions. -
Do I need a VPN to use Instagram in China with this eSIM?
Usually, no. Most Hong Kong travel eSIMs provide "roaming" data that bypasses local internet restrictions in Mainland China.
