What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

What is Hong Kong eSIM? How Does it Work?

A Hong Kong eSIM is a digital version of a physical SIM card that is embedded directly into your smartphone, allowing you to activate a cellular data plan without needing to insert a plastic card. It works by downloading a carrier profile via a QR code or an app, which then enables your phone to connect to local networks in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong eSIM is particularly useful for travelers as it allows for immediate connectivity upon arrival and the ability to maintain multiple data plans on a single device. For those visiting mainland China, a Hong Kong-based eSIM often provides the added benefit of accessing international websites and apps that are otherwise restricted.

How to Use and Set Up a Hong Kong eSIM

Following these steps ensures your device is ready and your data is active before you leave the airport.

Step 1: Where to Buy

You can purchase a Hong Kong eSIM directly from the Trip.com website or mobile app. Buying in advance allows you to receive the activation details via email or within the app immediately.

Check whether your smartphone is compatible

Step 2: Check Device Compatibility

Before purchasing, dial *#06# on your phone to see if an "EID" number is listed; if it is, your phone likely supports eSIM. Alternatively, check your settings under "About Phone" to confirm eSIM functionality is present.

Choose Your Hong Kong eSIM Plan

Step 3: Choose Your Plan

Select a plan on Trip.com that matches your duration and data needs. If you plan to visit the mainland, ensure the plan explicitly mentions "Mainland China and Macau" coverage.

 Get Your QR Code

Step 4: Install via Trip.com App

Open the Trip.com app and go to your "Bookings" section to find your eSIM order. Follow the prompts to "Install eSIM," which will automatically configure the settings on your phone without needing a QR code.

 Install eSIM

Step 5: Activate and Turn on Data Roaming

Once you arrive in Hong Kong, go to your phone's Cellular/Mobile Data settings and select the eSIM as your primary data line. You must turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM to connect to the local network and start working.

This was my first time buying an Airport Express ticket on TripAdvisor. It was very convenient; no need to exchange tickets, just scan the code to pass through the gate. The speed was also very fast, only 20 minutes from the city center to the airport. Plus, I got a buy-one-get-one-free deal, saving more than half the price. I'll definitely buy it again in the future.

This is my first time ordering a Hong Kong Octopus card from this website. The process was quick and easy. After arriving at Hong Kong Airport and clearing immigration, I scanned the code at Hall A13 to pick up the card! Everything went very smoothly. I will definitely recommend this to my friends next time.

Can I Access Western Apps in China with HK eSIM

One of the primary reasons travelers choose a Hong Kong eSIM for regional travel is its behavior in Mainland China.

  • Bypassing Restrictions: Because the data is routed through Hong Kong servers, you can typically access apps like Google, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp while in Mainland China without needing a VPN.
  • Convenience: This allows you to stay connected to your usual communication tools and maps while traveling between Hong Kong and cities like Shenzhen or Guangzhou.

  2. Network Speed: Most reviews note that 5G speeds are consistent in urban areas, though speeds may drop to 4G in remote parts of the New Territories.
  3. Customer Support: Travelers appreciate the 24/7 support available through the platform if activation issues arise.

I was very impressed with this eSIM during my trip to HK. It worked great and allowed me to access Google services, including Gmail, as well as WhatsApp without any issues. The connection was occasionally a little slow, but it was never a major problem. I always had data when I needed it, and everything worked exactly as expected. Overall, it was reliable, easy to use, and made traveling in China much more convenient. I would definitely use it again and highly recommend it.

My flight to London had a layover in China. First of all, I could use Line and Facebook without any problems, and Google worked perfectly. Whether watching, sending, or recording videos, sending messages, or making online calls, everything was incredibly convenient and clear, with consistent internet speed! Especially when sending videos, it was extremely convenient and didn't lag at all, making it a very pleasant experience! For someone on a layover, staying connected is incredibly easy; it's fantastic!

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM

Top Tips for Choosing the Best HK eSIM
  • Verify the Data Cap: Check if the plan is "Unlimited" or has a high-speed cap (e.g., 1GB per day) followed by slower speeds.
  • Check Expiry: Some eSIMs must be activated within 30 days of purchase; do not buy too far in advance.
  • Local Number Requirement: Some HK eSIMs are data-only. If you need to make local calls or book restaurants, ensure the plan includes a Hong Kong (+852) phone number.

Disclaimer: Network speeds and coverage are subject to local conditions and device capabilities. Availability of specific apps in Mainland China via eSIM is based on current roaming protocols and may change based on local regulations. Check Trip.com for the most current plan details and compatibility lists.

This is my go-to hotel whenever I'm in Hong Kong. The location is absolutely unbeatable – it's right above Harbour City, so you have endless options for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Plus, there's a direct walkway from the back entrance to the Star Ferry, making it super convenient to get to Central. This was my third stay in six months, and I always feel right at home. I arrived late at night, and the front desk staff, Aaron Xu, thoughtfully asked if I had a power adapter. When I said no, he immediately arranged for one to be sent to my room. It was also lovely to see the Chinese flag pin on his uniform. Highly recommend, I'll definitely be staying here again!

The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and the location is absolutely unbeatable. The room was also spacious and the bed was very comfortable. My only minor complaint is that the room I was assigned this time didn't have much of a view – all I could see when I opened the curtains was the building opposite. Other than that, everything was perfect!

The Cordis Hong Kong is a fantastic hotel with modern facilities and exceptionally clean, dry rooms. Given Hong Kong's notoriously high land prices, the room size was surprisingly generous and incredibly comfortable. The staff were all very warm, attentive, and patient when answering questions. I also loved the unique and atmospheric art installations in the lobby. The hotel is conveniently located right next to Langham Place, with an underground tunnel providing direct access to the bustling Mong Kok shopping district and Mong Kok MTR station, making it super easy to get around and shop.

I stayed here during the Dragon Boat Festival. I had asked Trip.com customer service to arrange a quiet, high-floor room near the elevator if possible. Upon check-in, the hotel front desk upgraded me to an executive floor room based on the Trip.com note, and it was indeed very quiet. For Hong Kong, this hotel is quite spacious; there's enough room to open two suitcases simultaneously. They also provide bed rails, which is perfect if you're traveling with kids. The hotel lobby connects directly to a plaza, making dining very convenient. The only downside is if you're traveling with kids and have a lot of stuff on a stroller, it's better to take a taxi. We took bus A21 from the airport (the bus was pretty fast), but after getting off, we had to drag our luggage quite a long way, which was really exhausting.

The location of the hotel is relatively convenient since it’s a few minutes away from Jordan Station. The temple night market and anytime fitness is close too from the hotel (approx 10-15min walk). The breakfast options aren’t the best but food was hot and decent. We had 2 main issues with the hotel which is the cleanliness and fire alarm. We found several cockroaches in the room but the staff moved us to a different room right after we reported it. Regarding the fire alarm, it went off at 2am waking us up. We evacuated and went downstairs immediately. However, they told us there was no fire and it was just gas leak issue. No apologies. Just told us that it’s normal and we should just go back to our rooms.

Hygiene: The bed sheets and duvet covers didn't seem to have been changed, as there were a few strands of hair on the pillow, and more hair was found when I pulled back the duvet at the foot of the bed. After the sheets were changed, my skin felt itchy when I slept at night. Service: The service was alright. They were cooperative when I asked for new sheets, trash removal, and extra tissues. Environment: The hotel's location is quite central, making it convenient to get around. Facilities: The facilities are a bit old, but that's understandable for Hong Kong. I just hope the hygiene conditions can be improved.

This hotel is located near Tsim Sha Tsui, one of Kowloon's busiest areas, surrounded by numerous shops and supermarkets. The rooms are quite spacious for this locality, and the beds are a comfortable 105cm wide. It's just a few minutes' walk to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station and nearby bus stops. There's a direct A21 bus service to the airport, and Victoria Harbour and the Avenue of Stars are within a kilometer's walk, making the location incredibly convenient.

Our stay at The Imperial Hotel Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong was truly exceptional, with professional and incredibly warm service! We didn't have an umbrella when it started raining, and the front desk staff proactively offered us a hotel umbrella, which was a huge lifesaver. When checking out, the front desk auntie was so thoughtful and professional; she even gave us Ferrero Rocher chocolates, considering that tourists might experience low blood sugar. That attention to detail was so touching. The hotel's location is superb, just a few minutes' walk to Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, making shopping and dining incredibly convenient. I was a bit hesitant after reading the reviews before booking, but decided to give it a try, especially since the price point meant I couldn't expect too much. The room was small but had everything I needed. There wasn't any musty smell as some mentioned, but the air conditioner vent was quite noisy, and the soundproofing wasn't great. If you're a light sleeper, I'd recommend booking a higher-end hotel, otherwise, you might struggle to fall asleep, like myself. The front desk staff on the 5th floor and the security guard downstairs were both very helpful.

Very convenient location to TST station where nearest exit N5 (stairs access only) to hotel. If you have big luggage, you can via iSquare mall, take escalator to ground level and cross the road to hotel. The renovated room is spacious with 2 double beds. But there is only 1 seater in the room and no bottled water or laundry bag provided. Toiletries are provided via dispensers. Counter staff at check in can be more polite. I will choose this hotel for it's location and room size. Many food options like Red Tea, Bakehouse, dim sum, wanton mee, chagee around. K11 mall just behind hotel. Sha Tin Hong Kong|8.21km from city centre
This is a very good hotel for Hong Kong standards. The only minor inconvenience is that it's not directly above an MTR station, but they do offer a shuttle bus service to West Kowloon and Sha Tin. Many hotels in Hong Kong are quite old, but this one is not only newly renovated and clean, but the service is also warm and attentive, always ready to help. Most importantly, the soundproofing is excellent, which is incredibly rare and a huge plus! Highly recommended. [The following content is unrelated to the hotel]: The Ctrip flight ticket promotion, 'Buy 19.9 RMB to get 15 RMB off 4 flight tickets,' is a complete scam and rip-off. Do not buy it! There are numerous restrictions that make it unusable. The so-called 'complaint specialist' - Fudoudou - is an *****, repeating the same single sentence even more than a robot. Last year, we have stayed here several times and back again this summer. The hotel is in a very nice location with lots of restaurants nearby, good food and not very expensive relative to other tourist districts like TST. Two blocks to the MTR station and bus terminal with easy access to every part of Hongkong. Close to the Victoria Park and walking distance through the park to the Causeway Bay shopping district. The new East Harbour-front broadwalk offering great view of the entire Victoria harbour and great for a morning jog or sunset walk. Also easy access up to the Hong Kong Island Coastal Trails. Staffs were very friendly with super fast checkin and checkout. Seems like the hotel has also done some minor improvements like better wifi connections and placing filter units in the hallways to clean the air due to people smoking in their rooms or in the hallway, even though the hotel is supposed to be totally smoking free environment! Will definitely be back again in the next few months.

Returned to The Empire Hotel Hong Kong · Wan Chai again, and it's still as much a favorite as ever. For someone like me with no sense of direction, its biggest advantage is the location. It's very close to Wan Chai MTR station, making it easy to walk to and from Causeway Bay, Admiralty, and Central. The airport bus stop is also near the hotel, which is incredibly convenient. Plus, there are plenty of dining options in the area. A big thank you for the upgrade to a double room with a window! The room size is definitely a major plus for a Hong Kong hotel, with ample storage and space to move around. North Point and Quarry Bay Hong Kong|4.24km from city centre
Hyatt Centric Hong Kong is definitely a hotel worth a glowing review after my trip to Hong Kong. I had a great impression of Hyatt Centric when I stayed at one in Kota Kinabalu before. This time, I checked into the Hong Kong location late at night, feeling quite upset after a terrible experience at another old five-star hotel the night before. My wife and I, with our luggage, decided to try this place out, and the overall experience significantly exceeded our expectations. Our room was a corner room. While not exceptionally large, it felt very spacious and comfortable, not at all cramped, which my wife also appreciated. Our room offered a partial sea view, but the other side was close to a residential building, so privacy was a bit lacking, and we generally had to keep the curtains drawn. The bathroom was a little small, making it a bit awkward to place the floor mat, and the hairdryer's power was weak, making it difficult to fully dry long hair. The service was a major highlight. Although the check-in route was a little convoluted, all the staff were very nice, genuinely warm, and unpretentious. Even though the hotel was almost fully booked, the front desk still upgraded our room type and arranged a high-floor room for us. The bellboy was also very thoughtful; he proactively offered an umbrella when we went out and helped us check ferry times. These small details left a great impression. The location is also excellent, making it very easy to hail a taxi. The hotel is right next to a pier, and it takes about ten minutes to get to Hung Hom by ferry, which is incredibly convenient. There's also a shopping mall nearby, perfect for daily meals, shopping, and stocking up on essentials. The North Point Exploration Package was the biggest surprise. It guides guests to experience small local shops, many of which I probably wouldn't have discovered on my own. The shop owners were all very welcoming, and the value of the vouchers was substantial, easily enough for a small brunch for two, providing a real taste of local life. Overall, although this hotel isn't huge and leans towards a business style, its service, comfort, location, and the local exploration experience it offers are all outstanding. Especially after the unpleasant hotel experience the night before, this hotel became a truly wonderful part of my Hong Kong trip. I would definitely consider staying here again on my next visit to Hong Kong.

The hotel is good. The location is excellent, close to many famous restaurants, and it's easy to walk around. There's an MTR station downstairs. However, the reception was slow; it took 20 minutes to get the key card, and everyone else around me had already left. The hotel doesn't provide water or amenities, but you can buy them at a reasonable price. I'd recommend having a water dispenser if you're not going to provide water. The breakfast was just average, not a lot of variety. But if I were to stay again, I would, because I really liked the location.

This hotel is always my first choice because of its excellent location, making it incredibly convenient to get to West Kowloon High-Speed Rail Station, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and Elements Cinema. However, with fewer tourists recently, the room rates fluctuate significantly. I wouldn't recommend booking too far in advance. I booked two months ahead, and when I contacted Trip.com and the hotel about canceling due to price changes, the hotel refused. Trip.com, however, compensated me for the price difference. I’d recommend bringing your own toiletries and slippers – the hotel's slippers are as flimsy as paper and practically unusable. I've spoken to the cleaning staff multiple times about it, and they say there's nothing they can do. Despite that, it's still a great hotel for tourists, and the staff are very polite and enthusiastic. Both times I've stayed recently, I've been able to check in early, probably due to the low occupancy. A big thank you to Trip.com! And the lobby service desk, which offers luggage storage, has always been friendly over the years. The transportation is excellent, and there are plenty of dining and entertainment options! The hotel is divided into high and low blocks, reaching up to 87 floors, making it the tallest five-star hotel in the New Territories. Below the hotel, there's a shopping mall and office space. Inside, you'll find the flagship Chinese restaurant 'Rú', the all-day buffet restaurant Café Circles, and the trendy pastry brand Nina Patisserie. The hotel also boasts a spacious outdoor swimming pool and a well-equipped fitness center, allowing guests to fully relax and unwind. The room size is ample, and basic amenities are comprehensive. Besides local basic channels, the TV also offers cable and satellite TV. However, it's a pity there's no access to streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+! The bathroom even has a bathtub, which I appreciate for a relaxing soak! Thanks to the hotel's height, you can enjoy panoramic views of Tsuen Wan and the Ting Kau Bridge, which is truly invigorating. The price is reasonable, offering great value for money!

The hotel's location is excellent. You can take the A21 bus from the airport directly to the hotel entrance. If you're over 65, you get a 50% discount on the bus fare, which is about HKD 15. It's a good idea to set up your Hong Kong Alipay or WeChat Pay at the airport to avoid the hassle of buying and refunding an Octopus card. The room was clean, and the facilities were generally good, though the electric kettle was quite old and had some limescale on the outside. I wish the coffee cups were larger ceramic ones; they were too small to brew proper coffee, and you'd only get a sip or two. Toiletries and mineral water are not provided in the room, so you need to buy them. Water from the machine in the lobby on the first floor costs HKD 3 a bottle, which is much cheaper than buying from a convenience store. When leaving for the airport, the bus stop is near Mong Kok MTR station. If you don't have much luggage, you can take one MTR stop to transfer there. Overall, I'm satisfied with the hotel.

The interior design was elegant, and the amenities were high quality, making for a quiet and relaxing stay. The location was excellent, making it convenient for getting around and exploring. North Point and Quarry Bay Hong Kong|4.26km from city centre
I booked 4 days 3 nights at iclub fortress hill, and while staying here, I must say the hotel is a convenient and comfortable place located in a quiter neighborhood in Hong Kong, It is a short walk from a Fortress Hill station, making it easy to reach Central, Causeway Bay, Wan Chai, and other major districts. The hotel offers clean, modern minimalist vibes, along with easy access to local restaurants, cafes, and public transport such as trams and busses. The complimentary coffee and light breakfast lounge adds extra value to the stay. One downside is the weak soundproofing, as noise neighboring rooms or the hallway can sometimes be noticeable.

This time, I didn't plan ahead. My return trip was suddenly delayed, and I needed to switch hotels last minute, so I just booked one nearby. I was genuinely amazed by this place! For around 1100, the room was incredibly spacious, completely unlike the 'every inch of land is precious' small rooms I always hear about. It had two bathrooms, a huge bed, two TVs, and a large bathtub with a separate shower. The amenities were also super comprehensive, including a universal adapter and complimentary bottled water in the room. I truly recommend room 1042! They also have all the disposable items for children, which you can ask for at the front desk. Highly recommended! It's also quite close to the MTR station. Just across the road is Kowloon Park, which is definitely worth a visit. Miramar Place is diagonally opposite, as well as Muji, and there's a Don Quijote import supermarket downstairs. Highly, highly recommend!

For this price in Hong Kong, being able to stay right by Victoria Harbour is excellent. The MTR station is right outside, the room is very spacious, and they even gave a small gift to my child. It was also my birthday, and they thoughtfully sent their wishes.

Staying here felt uniquely relaxing. It's not the usual stiffness of a business hotel or the looseness of a typical resort; it's more like a gentle embrace, a 'hidden gem in the city.' As you turn off the bustling Nathan Road into the hotel's driveway, the noise instantly fades. The room size is a luxury by Hong Kong Island standards. The enormous floor-to-ceiling windows transform the Victoria Harbour skyline into a living mural. The soft earth tones, velvet and leather accents, and books about Hong Kong on the shelves make it feel as comfortable as a friend's home. The bedding is exquisite, and the lighting is meticulously designed – no harsh glare, just warm, layered illumination. Breakfast is à la carte; I enjoyed eggs Benedict with a sea view. In the evening, I'd head to DarkSide for jazz, where the bartender crafted cocktails based on my mood. If I didn't feel like going downstairs, room service was prompt and excellent. The best part is the direct elevator access to K11 Musea, meaning you can step out and explore art exhibitions or grab a bite at Ichiran Ramen. It's a seamless transition between vibrant city life and tranquility. The sixth floor's Asaya feels more like a lifestyle center, complete with a shallow pool, thermal baths, and meditation spaces. Before a spa treatment, you can choose your preferred essential oils and music, and the therapists are incredibly gentle. Lounging on a chair, gazing at the sea view, time just seemed to stand still.

Sha Tin Hong Kong|7.52km from city centre
The transportation is incredibly convenient, with a bus stop right downstairs that's just one stop away from Sha Tin town center. The view is excellent, but because there are many buses, the river-view rooms can get noisy from the buses moving around. The hygiene is standard, meeting typical 4-star hotel expectations. It includes breakfast, the rooms are spacious, and it offers great value for money.

The room offered an unbeatable sea view. We booked the buffet dinner for Father's Day. Personally, I found the food to be just average, especially the snow crab, which was incredibly salty. There was a wide variety of desserts, each served in a small portion, which is great for people who like to try different things. As it's a family-friendly hotel, the facilities are perfect for families with kids; the pool isn't too deep and they provide life jackets in various sizes. There's no bottled distilled water in the room, but you can refill the provided bottle at the water dispenser in the hallway. Additionally, the hotel offers a free shuttle service to Wong Chuk Hang/Ocean Park MTR station. The hotel environment is comfortable, making it a good choice for a family getaway.

Great location! It's a five-minute walk to Times Square from where the shuttle drops you off, and there are plenty of food options nearby. Causeway Bay MTR station is about a seven or eight-minute walk. For the price, it's really good value, even cheaper than hotels on the mainland. The bed is a bit small, but for Hong Kong where space is at a premium, it's perfectly fine. Slippers are provided, but remember to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste.

Every time I visit Hong Kong, I stay at this hotel. The location is convenient, with direct transportation from the airport. It's also easy to get to Macau and Disneyland. The MTR takes you directly to Lan Kwai Fong, and it's excellent value for money!

This is my second time staying here. I first stayed at this hotel in 2017 when I came to Hong Kong. I must say the rooms are quite spacious, and the facilities are well-maintained. The service is also excellent. Kelly, the floor supervisor, was very thoughtful and attentive, even offering us complimentary fruit and chocolates from the hotel. I accidentally pulled down the curtain rod, and after I called, the staff and the Housekeeping Manager, Manager Zeng Xiaoyang, promptly came to our room. Manager Zeng even proactively helped us arrange a room upgrade. However, my child didn't want to move around since we only had two nights left, so we decided not to bother. From these small details, it's clear that this hotel genuinely values its guests' experience. It's excellent, and I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Hong Kong.

HongKong International Airport Hong Kong|23.37km from city centre
I treated myself to a 'me time' getaway and a visit to the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo. Choosing Regal Airport Hotel was the perfect decision once again. The Executive Floor sea view room is much more open than the garden view, and you can even watch planes land in the morning. It's a shame it was a yellow rainstorm again; the view would have been even better on a clear day. The room isn't huge, but the double bed is a good size, which was great for solo occupancy. Connecting my phone via Bluetooth to the Korean brand TV to listen to my own music was more appealing than watching TV. The only issue was the air conditioning, which would automatically turn off and then turn back on when the temperature rose slightly. So the room would suddenly go quiet or the AC would kick in with a noticeable sound. Breakfast was decent, but nothing special. There was no live egg station, just a large platter of scrambled eggs and boiled eggs, so the selection felt a bit limited. I remember last year they had freshly cooked noodle soup for breakfast, but not this year. The hotel's restaurant also participates in a food waste reduction program; you can buy a 'cake blind box' for HKD 103 via a certain app. The two cheesecakes I got were really delicious.
